Summary:
Bubbles struggles with staying sober. McNulty and Pearlman meet with Judge Phelan who is getting blowback from supporting McNulty's investigation.
Carver and Sydnor case out a payphone identified by Freamon and Prez as used by the distributor. They find a house with barred windows and security cameras. Investigation of the trash turns up paraphernalia.
Wallace is brought in and immediately starts talking. Daniels takes him to his grandmother's house.
Orlando is caught trying to buy drugs in a state police sting. They match him up with the Barksdale investigation and turn him over to McNulty and crew.
McNulty convinces Daniels that using Orlando will not net them Avon, only mid-level players. Daniels makes his case to his superiors, but Burrell overrides him and insists on a quick bust.
Omar meets with Stringer wearing a wire but Stringer is careful in not talking about Avon. Omar gets on a bus for New York, knowing the truce deal from Avon is a setup.
Greggs poses as Orlando's girlfriend to bust one of Avon's mid-level guys in a buy. But Avon's crew suspects that Orlando is snitching and they lure them to an alley and shoot them both.
Random thoughts:
Greggs had a good intuition with Shardene, but you have to wonder how good of a witness she will be without her glasses.
I understand McNulty's wife being pissed about using the boys to tail Stringer, but the whole court thing and their subsequent (somewhat) makeup did not seem to add much, other than that he still loves her.
I really liked the last scene. On one hand you could just write it up to the cops being incompetent, but I thought it really illustrated how quickly things can spiral out of control. I also liked that the shooting was mostly off camera. The viewer gets to share in the worry and suspense with the lost cops. Once they arrive the fast moving (but not quick cut) camera-work also conveys this sense of confusion and loss of control.
Is Greggs dead? Hmm... I tend to think not, I still think Bubbles has the biggest target on his back. Her night out drinking was an emotional setup for something to happen, but there may be some life in her story-line yet. Of course I will take my hat off to the writers if she is dead, I always respect that kind of ballsy move.
