I think there might be enough material out there to do a twice-weekly show, but scheduling would be weird and anything more than that would dilute it too much.

Update on some FIFA stuff, apparently pointing out any corruption that FIFA might have gone through with the world cup just smacks of discrimination and racism, according to Sepp.
He has also said that people criticizing the Qatar bid were being euro centric imperialists for saying it was too hot to play soccer. That one was a while back though.

I'm a day late, but I had to seek out this thread and chime in with the fact that he seems to be going farther than Stewart or Colbert. You can take HBO's money and deliver a good show, but he's taking their money and delivering an EXCELLENT show, an essential show because of the way Oliver tackles important global issues that other US networks gloss over quickly. Could he do the same thing for 4 days a week? Maybe, but probably not. The fact that it's a weekly show is really working in favor of it on so many levels... Yeah, while this is a comedy show the general points he is trying to make are sincere and very thoughtful. He is able to pull out all the stops in ways Colbert and Stewart can't because they are tied down to 21 minutes a show and an interview, and take a more comical side. Oliver feels more like actual news that just has hilarious zingers sprinkled in throughout. For the main piece of the week of course. Not so much the right Fred said or the bill nye segment a while back, and things like that.

I loved the Bill Nye segment, though, because underneath it was the very sincere point that there shouldn't be any debate about this when the science is so lopsided. The Right Said Fred segment on the other hand...much more of a petty swipe at a brutal dictator, which I enjoyed for what it was, but wasn't really profound or anything. Otherwise, I definitely agree with the people who say that it's better than Stewart or Colbert (who I still enjoy on a regular basis) at the moment. I think the fact that it's on HBO helps, as well as that it's only once a week and that Oliver seems a bit more interested with doing news than either Stewart or Colbert (once again, not a knock on either of those shows).

Yeah, saying Last Week Tonight is better isn't really a knock on stewart and colbert. Those shows just don't have the same options as what Oliver could do with HBO. Oliver can lean more towards the news side of things than comedy, and a big part is not having to spend a huge chunk of the episode on an interview and there are no commercials. Without commercials daily show and colbert run around 21 minutes, and about 5 to 7 of those 21 are for the interview portion. That leaves only around 14 to 16 for the rest, and Olivers main piece runs around 11 to 13 minutes. Oliver made the right choice in choosing to go to HBO instead of waiting around for whenever Stewart was going to leave. Oliver has a lot more freedom, and the writers also have more time to craft a full on story in this format.

Poorly formed argument for preference to Oliver:
Despite Stewart's platform and willingness to debate his nemeses, his work isn't helpful like Oliver's Last Week Tonight. Oliver's calls to action, specifically regarding GM and Net Neutrality, are different than transgressive entertainment. He's trying to provoke change. So too would I enclose Colbert's work in transgressive entertainment. Sure, he's done some very cutting work, particularly the White House Press Conference in 2006, but the focal point is the transgression, not evincing change. By transgressive entertainment I mean, "Things are too fucked to really make a difference. Let's smirk and poke fun. That'll do the trick. Laughter is the best medicine. *Ironic HA-HA*". Truly, I may be yodeling from my lower cheeks, because I haven't followed Stewart and Colbert since I last had consistent access to cable television. But, my opinion regarding what's different about the shows compared stands.
Assail at will.

repulsionist Both Colbert and Oliver have recently made calls to action, but Colbert's is on behalf of the people who publish his books and their current struggle with Amazon. I'm not saying that Hachette are in the wrong in that particular struggle, but it's more personal for him than Oliver's 'this is bad for everybody' with net neutrality, an issue that TDS and TCR have remained silent on.

We cannot have dingos in the government! We need proof that you are not a dingo FCC douchebag!
Also, that Stephen Hawking interview is quite amusing and really puts John in his place.

That was a great episode. The immigration bit was a tour de force (he lost his virginity to anti-Bulgarian sentiment!) and the Hawking interview was hilarious.

Today on the Bugle's twitter feed it was announced that it would be taking the summer off and instead only giving us micro Bugles. And the reason stated was mainly due to Last Week Tonight.
Therefore, Last Week Tonight must be destroyed.
I WANT MY FUCKING BUGLE!

X the Anonymous Zeus or Odin I wish I could show empathy for your pain, but I've always found the other half of the Bugle team extremely irritating, so I gave up on it after a few episodes. Last Week Tonight is funnier and it guarantees 30 great minutes a week, while the podcast (in the time I did follow it) was irregular at best.

Assail at will. Well, here is a good argument, even though it was written last year prior to Oliver's show's existence. www.salon.com/2012/07/25/jon_stewart_capitalist_stooge/

So I just watched last night's episode. The segment on monarchies was fairly meh I felt. If there had been a bit more focus on some of the crazy middle eastern ones I'm sure it could've gone into complete fucknuttery but it seemed to lack the bite. His Dr Oz segment however did make up for it, while it started off a little bit slow for me when he started digging down into the bullshittery those companies did it raised the episode.
Then it gave me a tap dancing Steve Bulscemi and stole my heart.
My overall opinion of last nights episode? FUCK YOU OLIVER! STOP DOING THIS SHITTY SHOW AND GIVE ME MY FUCKING BUGLE!
For the record, that will pretty much be my opinion of every episode until the Bugle properly starts up again in September. Or Andy Zaltzman starts doing stuff. Perhaps Andy could dig up John Grishim's old manuscript The President's Penis, which of course is a sequel to his unreleased manuscript, The Congressman's Penis.

I loved the bit on Doctor Oz. I know nobody expects anything much of cable news in general or Morning Joe in particular but I literally couldn't believe the way they fell in line to praising Oz's irresponsible shilling.

It kind of blew me away that they were saying how they'd buy one of Dr. Oz's bullshit coffee bean extract things after a segment where they showed that they were bullshit and not at all "miraculous." Also, on a related note, those glasses don't make you smarter, Joe Scarborough. They just make it all that more embarrassing when you keep acting dumb. Rick Perry, this applies to you too.

His actual wife is like, a soldier-doctor whom he met when she smuggled him and the Daily Show camera crew into the RNC convention. I respect that woman far too much to discuss possible crushes on Oliver. Other married stars, perhaps, but Oliver scored the wife of a lifetime. Rock on, Mrs. Oliver. Rock on. Kiss that comedy dork for all of us.
