I always get slightly nervous when people in Oliver's position leverage their fans to antagonize foreign leaders and companies. Probably nothing is going to happen. Surely nothing is going to happen. But you stick your head in that lion's mouth enough times, you're going to get bit.
What I'm saying is, I don't want John Oliver to be assassinated by an Ecuadorian ninja clown.

A somewhat...unsettling topic that would have terrified me years ago when I was more naive on the subject. There was one part that particularly creeped me out...but other than that, it was a good return. (Side note: I'm a little surprised he didn't at all connect that to the anti-vax movement, which was only parodied in the opening credits, and I was also hoping he would update those who haven't been paying attention about the net neutrality fight, which we are close to winning but still have to keep our focus laser-sharp.) I'd love for him to do a follow-up to his net neutrality piece. That'd be good for a final segment after the top story. Although it's not exactly tidy at 15 minutes or so, his original piece on net neutrality is still the standard bearer for people on our side to say a) What is net neutrality? and b) Why do we need it? and c) Why is it in danger? Still my favorite segment in the show's history.

Colbert left and Stewart's leaving. At least we still have John Oliver.

Did anyone else look up their physicians? Our family doctor had two meals listed, which felt good, but then in the process of going through all the vague specialists that we've had to see over the years, we looked up a dermatologist who'd been paid over $10,000 in consulting fees.

My family doctor didn't have anything listed, but a search for my endocrinologist turned up regular small food/drink charges and a $1,500 "consulting" fee.

Looked up my doctor. $200 worth of food from two meals back in 2013, so I consider her pretty clean. Mr Tea's doctor wasn't even listed, which was great. I'm keeping that link on hand though if we ever have to visit any specialists. From the anecdotal evidence here, those are the guys getting paid big money.

A somewhat...unsettling topic that would have terrified me years ago when I was more naive on the subject. I know a lot of doctors, and trust me, nothing about that episode was news to me. (Well, okay, 'Thought Leader', that is both news and hilarious.)

I see a lot of people hoping Oliver jumps ship from HBO back to the Daily Show, but I would hate to see that happen. HBO is clearly a far superior outlet for him.

The thought crossed my mind, and I definitely wouldn't be upset if he continued on after Jon Stewart, but I totally agree. Once a week on HBO is a winning formula. Don't tweak it, John!

That brief opening tribute to Jon Stewart was so sweet.
Also - who here got the fact that Uruguay was incorrectly identified immediately, and knew which country it properly corresponded to?

My dad, mom, and I all said afterwards that we suspected that something was wrong, but trusted it because we weren't 100% sure. Of course, that's after the fact so take it with an appropriate grain of salt.

That brief opening tribute to Jon Stewart was so sweet. Also - who here got the fact that Uruguay was incorrectly identified immediately, and knew which country it properly corresponded to? As Mr Tea and I were watching, I said hesitatingly, "I think they've highlighted Para -" and then the joke dropped. So my brain caught it, but my front brain was like "but it's a picture of a map on TV! It MUST be true!"

Hey, China does a massive New Year's concert gala like Japan. From those clips it looks sillier, though.

Still absolutely stunned he actually did it. And how pathetic the answers were when John (well, somebody who works for him, presumably) walked around NYC and the best answers were the ones who said "he stole...things from the government and shouldn't have because rules?" and "he's the Wikileaks guy, right?"
"Do you miss Hot Pockets?" "I do miss Hot Pockets...very much." "Do you miss the state of Florida?" *Russian crickets*

Oh my god, that IRS Star Trek video is just sad.
He's wearing a Next Generation era science uniform while playing Spock! THAT'S NOT HOW THAT WORKS!
