Metal heads! Lovers of loud-ass heavy music! What have you been listening to? What new music are you excited about? What shows are you going to?
I'll get the ball rolling. Maybe Jason Heller can make a guest appearance some day.
I'm loving that new Gojira/Kvelertak live EP I downloaded off Metal Sucks. Excited about seeing Pelican on Friday night. Psyched for the new supergroup with Troy from Mastodon and the legend, Max Cavalera.
Retro album of the month: Metal Church's 1984 self-titled.

I'm all about the last Modern Life Is War, Touche Amore, and Doomriders albums. Kvelertak is always dope, I thought I read they were touring with High On Fire and Doomriders soon, I need to look into that. I'm cautiously optimistic about that Cavalera group, they apparently have Greg from the Dillinger Escape Plan on that as well. Retro album of the now: 1982's Negative Approach 7-inch.

I'm all about the last Modern Life Is War, Touche Amore I've certainly taken to Modern Life Is War more than the Touche Amore - I find it hard to deal with Touche Amore's dynamic for so many songs in a row. Also been listening to (that I can think of right this second) - Helm's Alee, who are basically somewhere on the spectrum between Torche and Kylesa. The new Jesu. I enjoy it.

I'm excited for new Big Business on Thursday! They've been streaming a few of the songs this past week and so far it's sounding awesome.
Have fun at the Pelican show, Smacky!

I haven't been to too many shows this last few months. I think the last one I went to was The Melvins a while ago, I think back in July.
I think next week, my buddy and I are going to go see Lamb Of God, since he's been on a LoG kick these past few weeks, and he has never seen them live. I think this makes it #6 for me, in terms of seeing live shows of theirs. Should hopefully be pretty groovy.
My other friend's band, In The Company of Serpents, is releasing a full length on vinyl come Nov 8th. They are having a record release show that night (which also happens to be the night that Dax Riggs is playing in Denver.......Friends before acquaintances, I guess. I am filming their show for them.) You cats might be able to check it out at Bandcamp.
The biggest news I am excited for, is that I have the good fortune to see Sleep again, on Jan 3rd, at the Gothic Theater.
Retro Album of the whatever: Sir Lord Baltimore's 1970 release "Kingdom Come"

They do not play the entirety of it, but more of a 7-8 min abridged version. It still fucking kicks ass. They also played one or two songs they never recorded, one of them being called "Antarcticus Thawed" or something like that. I do not know what they are going to be doing this go around, but I know back in 2010 or 2009 (whenever it was) they played the entirety of Holy Mountain. A Sleep show is fucking religious. I remember I sat in the balcony to watch, and I looked down into the pit, and people were fucking dazed by what they were hearing. Might be the only time I have seen people stoned on soundwaves alone. I wasn't smoking grass or drinking in excess or anything because I wanted to remember the show, but man........I might be prone to going into one of the newly opened grass shops that will be in Denver around that time, and pick up a joint for this show.

From the moment I received my preorder I've been jamming new Protest the Hero pretty much whenever I get to listen to music. It's everything I love about this band ... again! Four albums deep now and they never fail to 1) write music that is first and foremost good, 2) write music that respects their fans and what people love about them, 3) bring something new to their sound so it's not the same album over and over.
As usual it took about 5 or 6 listens to start feeling it, because their songs are so damn busy, but now that I can put all the pieces together I'm just completely in love with this record. LoG fans may be interested to know that Chris Adler sat in as their session drummer in the studio, and he slays it. Adds a more aggressive edge to the band's sound, and creates a faster and more intense feel than any of their past records.
I hope to catch them on tour in November.
For those moments when I do need a break from Protest, I've been jamming the new So Hideous. I'm not sure what to call their sound - orchestral black metal sounds closest on paper, but that's really misleading in reality. It's cheating, but the true best way to describe their sound is, "like Deafheaven, only not Deafheaven." Instrumentally they're very different from Deafheaven, but they "feel" very similar in terms of that anguished intensity and structural sprawl. Don't hold their terrible name against them. They are legit.

I've been listening to Infestissumam so much the last few pre-Halloween weeks I almost spent an absurd amount of money to dress like this on Thursday. It's been exacerbated by the fact I had to work last week during what will probably be one of their only shows within driving distance. The only way a band with the lyrics and stage show of Ghost can sneak into Oklahoma is apparently as the undercard for the Deftones and Avenged Sevenfold.

Ok, so I decided to really give Infestissumam a listen today. Holy shit is it good. By no stretch of the imagination can I begin to call this metal though. There is so much '60s-psych packed into this, which is in the doomy-stony-psych vein that I love so much. Man, Secular Haze is such a good song.

Still, I've been looking forward to this album ever since I heard it announced months ago. And when did the album come out? I thought it was today, but from the context of your comment, that seems unlikely.

I think that I will ultimately prefer this to Scurrilous, although I love that record too, so you and I may be coming from different places. Overall Volition is a heavier record, which brings back some of that Fortress flavor, and there's a great balance of aggressive and more melodic moments while never sacrificing on tempo (this is by far their fastest record). My experience with Protest the Hero has always been that it takes time and many listens to get a hold on their music. Some bands I can make up my mind after one or two spins and feel confident in that decision. With Protest, I feel I can hear a record ten times through and still not be ready to declare a verdict. Today is the official release, but when it leaked about a week and a half ago, the band decided to send out the digital downloads for people who preordered through their Indiegogo campaign.

Yea they're definitely more Alice Cooper than Gojira, but I'd have to stare at that genealogy chart from A Headbanger's Journey for quite awhile before I knew where to properly put them. What up, Loudlings! I had been ignoring the TI since NuDisqus struck, but I'm glad I checked it this week. 'cause it sent me here, and this is great.
What I'm about to be listening to: the new Nocturnal Graves, which I just received in today's mail. Woot. If you don't know from this band, they play manic black/death/thrash of the sort that Australia has copyrighted and will sue you for infringing on.
What I've been listening to: the Treblinka box set. Yes, they're tastelessly named, but this is essential black metal history, not to mention essential Swedish death metal history since this band became Tiamat and made the great "Sumerian Cry." This set is bloated to extreme excess, just like the Morbid set before it, but it's handsomely packaged and disc 1 is essential. I never thought I'd see an official version of this music after holding onto a decent bootleg CD for years, but here it is.
I've also been playing a lot of GTA V, which means listening to a lot of GTA V radio, which is how I ended up grabbing a copy of Black Flag's "My War" after disregarding it for too many years because I thought nothing could live up to the early singles or "Damaged." Well, I still basically think that, but "My War" is a damn good album. Now I'm going to have to explore all the later, more disreputable, sludgy and pretentious Flag albums that I've only ever heard bits and pieces of.
What my label is doing: planning for a very busy end of 2013 and early 2014. I won't plug too hard but if you're interested, you can find our official site or our Facebook page with not much effort - it's Unspeakable Axe Records. Three vinyl releases are at press and some more CDs are coming soon too.

I've found in recent years many of the people who don't like My War etc also don't tend to like Damaged - it's a First Four Years only and then Rollins ruined them. I am not one of those people (and in any case, there were The Circle Jerks for people who feel Black Flag lost their way when they got less bratty). For my 2c, In My Head (especially the title track) is the best of that post-My War bunch, although Loose Nut does also have Annihilate This Week, which is the kind of song that is ostensibly about criticising boneheaded attitudes, but also has a great boneheaded chorus - *Chugga Chugga Chug* ANNIHILATE *Chugga Chugga Chug* ANNIHILATE

I do like the brattier stuff a bit better personally, but that's just the way my tastes run; "Damaged" is awesome.

In some ways, some of those earlier punk classics are more respected with more general music or loud guitar fans (like myself) than people I've encountered who are more thoroughly invested in the 'scene', some of which is down to genuine differences in taste (essentially something like Damaged could be seen as moving away from what makes punk worthwhile to certain people) and some pissy snottiness (it's overrated! you can't tell me what to like! it's punk for people who don't like punk!).

Jumping the gun by a day to let all you LOUD music fans know that seminal father-daughter grindcore act Sockweb have finally released their debut EP. theironcouncil.bandcamp.com/album/bullies-are-mean-epUnfortunately, the 4-track EP consists entirely of already released material and is functioning as more of a stop gap while the duo put the finishing touches on their LP, expected late 2013/early 2014. But this is the first time the four tracks have been made available for download, and with the whole thing priced at only a buck, this is the easiest buying decision you'll face all week. Far surpassing accusations of gimmickry with the most slammin' grinds, Sockweb is the combination of composer Adam "Blackula" Young and his 7 year-old daughter, lyricist/vocalist Joanie "Bologna" Young. All other "kid metal" acts might as well pack it up, because the unchecked brutality of Sockweb will destroy all. (Because it's not clear to me how this will come across, I'll just say that I really do enjoy this band, and in fact, I find Joanie's vocals on "Bullies Are Mean" to be genuinely brutal. That outro!) Anyway, y'all listenin' to good stuff? I like the new Carcass a lot. It's a little fit and tidy for the side of me that likes the whole sprawling, progressive thing, but then sometimes fit and tidy is exactly what I want.

One of the fun things about the EP is listening to how quickly she improved. "I Want Pancakes" - this is a funny gimmick with better than average composition for a kid metal band. "Bullies Are Mean" - jesus fucking christ!
