Wow. In slow motion, it kind of looks like their butts are clapping. I'm not really feeling the song though--did this album come out yet? Came out maybe a month ago? I do like the song. It's one of my favorites from the record, so if you're not feeling this then I wouldn't get high hopes. Of course I still pine for the early Mastodon days, but I do like this album more than The Hunter, by a good measure.

I love this album as much as I love Leviathan & Blood Mountain, although I recognize how different it is from those albums. I liked The Hunter but have already listened to Once More....way more times than I ever did The Hunter in the time that it's been out. My favorite tracks are Ember City and Asleep in the Deep.

Maeth. Here's a good, under-the-radar suggestion for you post-rock and metal fans. Maeth play a crunchy, sludgy brand of metal with an on-occasion etheral, almost spiritual aesthetic. It's pretty, it can be quite heavy, and what I like best is that compared to many post-whatever bands, this music has some kick in its giddy-up. Plus, flute! Mostly growled vocals, but really there are few vocals at all. It plays like an instrumental record with occasional vocals for accent. Reminiscent of *shels in that way. Their debut full-length is free on Bandcamp and has been a big jam for me all year: maeth.bandcamp.com/

AL'S CICADA-LIKE POSTING WITHIN THE LOUD THREAD:
Figure 1.
Figure 2.
Figure 3.
Figure 4.
(FYI: This isn't some sort of White Power band or anything. They just really like World War II. Plus one of the dudes in the band's grandparents were in a concentration camp. Don't think that rules them as Nazi sympathizers. Just listen to the heavy.)

Holy shit you guys, there's a new AT THE GATES album and they're touring the US in early 2015. I know what I'm picking up as soon as I get home.
(Oh hell it's time for happy hour #2 of the day. Back to it!)

Friday Afternoon Tech Death Metal: Revocation are a silly band. Even if the song didn't kick metric tons of ass, the video for "Dismantle the Dictator" would be worth watching just for the faces. And that one beautifully filmed slide.

2014 in LOUD! Celebrating some our favorite LOUD releases of 2014. Black Crown Initiate, The Wreckage of Stars
Progressive death metal wunderkinds enthusiastically fill the gaping hole left after Opeth decided to toke up and chill out, brah. Their full-length debut doesn't quite equal the sheer immaculacy of their 2013 EP, Song of the Cripple Bull, but its many highs are positively stratospheric. Heavy, melodic, crafted. I suspect I'll be jamming this one for years to come. Recommended tracks: "A Great Mistake" (the first track, what you hear when you press play below), "The Human Lie Manifest", "Withering Waves"

Ne Obliviscaris, Citadel
These Aussie sort-of-prog, sort-of-black, sort-of-death metallers released what is a top 10 of lifetime album in 2012's Portal of I, their full-length debut. That album was the soundtrack of my life for a year and a half. Needless to say, my expectations of their follow-up went beyond high. They were unreachable. And needless to say, they didn't reach them. This is still one of the best metal albums of the year. Citadel pushes NeO's always compelling blend of harrowing death, symphonic beauty and blistering percussion to places both heavier and lighter than they've ever been. It's never exactly pretty the way its predecessor was, but it does feel more restrained and "written" than ever before. If Portal of I was this family's mercurial first born, Citadel is the brainy middle child who's too clever by half. I can't wait to meet the next in line! Recommended tracks: "Tryptich Lux", "Phyrric" What I really recommend: seriously if Ne Obliviscaris is new to you, you should absolutely listen to Citadel, but what you should really do is listen to Portal of I. "Forget Not" and "And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope" are best.

Fallujah, The Flesh Prevails
Fallujah have that uncommon ability to incorporate a lot of what you recognize and yet sound like nothing you've ever heard. It's tech death, but it's not aimless wankery. It's symphonic, but it's not over-grand and plodding. And 'dem vocals! The Flesh Prevails is propulsive death metal that grabs you by the genitalia and pounds you into submission a thousand bass kicks at a time. This album is infamous for its super low DR, "wall of sound" production that some people say make it unlistenable. I dunno. I mean, I get it, but I still managed to listen to this record a bunch in 2014. Recommended tracks: "Sapphire" (when they debuted this track online, a big chunk of the metal community let out a collective "whoa!"), "Carved From Stone", "The Night Reveals"

Destrage, Are You Kidding Me? No.
I think I tried twice before to do even a quick post about these dudes around the time the album dropped, and both times I was stymied by the sheer unexplainable-ness of Destrage. What kind of band are they? I don't know. Creative, catchy, showy, ridiculously talented. Like if Puddle of Mudd was a sick metal band (and I mean that in the best way possible.)
Are You Kidding Me? No. is one of the most fun, weird and balls-out entertaining albums I heard all year. The sound of a band pushing itself to play to the very limit of its abilities at all times!
Recommended tracks: "Purania", "Destroy, Create, Transform, Sublimate", "Are You Kidding Me? No."

Wow, been busy with life for a while, it's nice to check in and have a bunch of new stuff to check out.
Recently I've rediscovered my love for Botch, so for those of you who never heard the classic We Are The Romans, I'll just leave this here.

Rolo Tomassi are a good band who are deserving of your attention. They do a lot of things and they do them all well. Here's a couple of songs to listen to before you go looking for more:

Intercontinental, studio-only progressive deathcore outfit Slice the Cake have improved with every release over the past 5 years, depositing more and more of their "core" sound on the side of the road, tightening their songwriting considerably and letting their freak flag fly ever higher. Last week they dropped our first glimpse of their new record (release TBA), and it's kind of glorious. "The Mountains of Man" is their biggest leap forward yet, a titanic progressive death track rife with bangable riffs, soaring melodies, clever songwriting and, for a nearly 9-minute track, an energized sense of momentum. The smart writing is what stands out to me. Like the way that pitched, droning guitar line starting around 3:04 serves to bridge three sections of the song and adds texture to the acoustic bit starting around 3:53. In the hands of another band, that section might be "generic pretty acoustic part" like we've heard Opeth do better a hundred times. Here, by keeping in that buzzing guitar line, Slice the Cake change the feel entirely and puts the whole song on a knife's edge. I find the song to be studded with moments like that. Also noticeably improved are singer Gareth Mason's growled vocal lines. The sound is still very deathcore, which in their case I like but your mileage may vary, but he has gotten much better at pacing the lines out to fit with the groove of the song. They have breathing room and impact, where in previous releases they were suffocating. Put emphatically, "The Mountains of Man" is a mission statement. It is Slice the Cake's message to the world: "Progressive metal is our sandbox now, and we're coming for your lunch money." Listen if You Like: Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, Burst, Black Crown Initiate, Persefone, Son of Aurelius Bandcamp: slicethecake.bandcamp.com/music

Caleb Schofield is my favourite shouty man. He's sounds so dang angry.
Let's also listen to Will Haven because I'm in a good mood and that downtuned chug of pure menace makes me smile.

I know the LOUD thread seems to tend much more towards the metal side of the punk/metal spectrum, but Noisey just released part 1 of 4 of their story about the legendary NYHC band Judge. They were this heavy, confrontational straight edge band that just broke up and disappeared at the height of their popularity in the early 90s. These dudes, in my opinion, were some of the earliest practitioners of what would eventually and unfortunately come to be called "metalcore" (god I hate that fucking term.) Anyway, regardless of your musical preference, I thought it was pretty well done and worth a watch if you have 15 minutes to spare.

Seems I have some catching up to do in the LOUD thread. I'll have to listen to all of this goodness, soon!
Seriously though guys, much love to those of you who keep this thread going. I've gotten to know some amazing bands through you guys.
I'll just leave this here because the first minute and eleven seconds of this song basically being a feedback squeal is motherfucking awesome:

This is probably old hat to you guys but since having kids I have been really out of touch with the music scene. But thanks to Pandora (yeah I know) I have discovered a love for stoner doom post-metal or whatever else you call slow heavy melodic instrumental metal. Right now my playlist is full of Electric Wizard, Sleep, Dead Meadow, Pelican, Russian Circles, Witchcraft, Acid King all thanks to having Isis in my station and heading down a rabbit hole.
I also have to thank some on this site for turning me on to Ghost B.C. last year.

I'm starting to feel like they're due. I'm particularly excited by the thought, because Axe to Fall and All We Love... are my favorite two records of theirs, and I want that freight train to continue.
