I love these guys, I was a huge Cave In fan back in the day, and Converge is one of the greatest bands of all time (fact), so this hits my sweet spot. All We Love... was 2012. I'm starting to feel like they're due. I'm particularly excited by the thought, because Axe to Fall and All We Love... are my favorite two records of theirs, and I want that freight train to continue. I think they've released a new album every three years like clockwork. I'm hoping this year we see something, but I haven't heard any news of them in the studio as of yet.

There's a new Mutoid Man single. And now you know that. And now you are happy. I'm having trouble getting the player to embed, so here's a link: youtu.be/MKh-Nf2NeEYI love these guys, I was a huge Cave In fan back in the day, and Converge is one of the greatest bands of all time (fact), so this hits my sweet spot. Cave In are one of my all time favourite bands. Every stylistic shift they've made over the years has turned out music that appeals to me. Well done to them.
Employed To Serve are a British hardcore band who are releasing their debut album at the end of the month. Here's a song from it:

Cautious optimism. I remember not liking the first single when it hit, but honestly I don't remember what it sounds like anymore. I'll have to check this out tonight. I hope I like it more than that new Tomahawk record.

I need more time to know for sure. Update: I fucking love it, it took a day or two to really sink in.

Same thing happened with King For A Day... so I knew going in I'd need to just put it on repeat for a while before I could form an opinion. They're just one of those bands for me.

HOLY SHIT. This is like what I imagine Nirvana might have sounded like in an alternate universe where they were still around. I hear it, they also remind me of Quicksand for some reason.

I didn't know this when I mentioned them a page or two back but Will Haven have got a new EP out and guess what, it's pretty good.
Really excited about the upcoming High On Fire album too, even more so since I found out Kurt Ballou is on production duties. That fella has a knack for making bands sound good. The pause before the guitar solo on the first track they've released gets me every time. POW!

Add me to the list of people who love the new Faith No More record. I went in expecting to hate it, based on the first single, and based on how I only liked a handful of songs on KFAD and Album of the Year, and based on how "Matador" sounded decent-to-good but maybe not earth-shattering in the live clips I'd seen on YouTube. I'd seen that it was getting a lot of good reviews overseas, which only made me worry more that it was was going to appeal to the fans who like the songs I don't on the later albums (songs like "Digging the Grave" and "Gentle Art Of Making Enemies"), but I also saw more than one person say it was a grower. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover I loved it on first listen. It sounded like what I wanted the latest Tomahawk record to be, only with a dash more Angel Dust. And holy crap, "Matador" is fucking amazing recorded. And even "Motherfucker" sounds considerably better in the context of the whole album. I'm not 100% in love with one or two of the songs so far, but overall, I'm completely floored by how much I love it. The double-header of "Matador" and "From The Dead" is a microcosm of everything I love about Faith No More.

I think those few songs that I'm kinda meh about are going to grow on me. But I can't stop singing the refrain "leader of men" over and over in my head. And monodrone I second the excitement for the new HOF as well. This track sounds great. That pause is so balls I had to back it up and hear it again. Maybe this is the year I'll finally see them live.

I'm not fond of the verses on that one, but even on the first listen I knew it's the kind of song where it'll come on, I'll go "ew!", and then 45 seconds later I'll be all "This is the greatest song ever! Don't ever stop, song!" (I call this the "Mermaids Effect" after that Nick Cave song that manages to go from "most annoying lyrics ever penned, I'm going to kill myself if I hear one more second of this horrid crap" to "huh, could this be one of the best songs on my ipod?" in the span of 3 minutes.) Right now I think "Black Friday" is the only one that hasn't really sunk in for me. My last play-through saw me come around fully on "Motherfucker".

I was a fan of "Motherfucker" from the very beginning even it does have a little bit of a novelty-song feel which I was like, "come on guys, you're better than this" but I loved it anyway. The sincerity with which he sings "get the motherfuckerrrrrrrr..." after the chanting verses just slays me. "Superhero" is a juggernaut. I love the repeating piano part and how it jumps from one key to another. Oh man I gotta go listen to it right now.

I love the repeating piano part and how it jumps from one key to another. Oh man I gotta go listen to it right now. That's totally it -- as a single "Motherfucker" felt so much like a novelty and so much like a "Oh, FNM is trying to fuck with us by making this their big, first, come-back single. Ha. Ha." But in the context of the album, it really works. And I love the goofiness of the guitar solo balancing the sincerity you're talking about it. And, it's fun to hear Roddy's voice along with Patton's. As for the Nick Cave song, you can hear it here. It requires hearing it all the way through. The first few lines are without a doubt my least favorite lyrics ever. They used to make me pick up my ipod to check the title so I'd know to always skip that song. I would be all, "OK, this one is called 'Mermaids'. I know I can always skip 'Mermaids'." Then I discovered that 50% of my listens to that album involved me picking up my ipod to check what the title was for the current song that must be the most beautiful song ever. "'Mermaids'! OK! Must remember 'Mermaids' is awesome!" It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize it was the same song. Me so smrt.

This isn't new or anything, just a band I really like and wanted to plug. They also remind me of Cave In, Dillinger and math/hardcore/post type bands that people 'round here seem to like.
Exotic Animal Petting Zoo, Tree of Tongues
Like a fun, melodic Dillinger Escape Plan with occasional glimpses of swarthy Deftones vocals, Exotic Animal Petting Zoo's sophmore album, Tree of Tongues, is on the shortlist of albums I've listened to most since its release in 2012. The songs are fast and dynamic, and they ride a perfect line between hardcore aggression, math-y instrumentation (but not overwrought) and dramatic pop sensiblity. Rock solid lyrics, too. The whole album slays, but here are a couple of my favorites:
Just a balls-to-the-wall great rock song.
The way this track evolves yet coheres over its short run time amazes me:

I was lucky enough to support them at their first gig outside of Ireland back in 2007 - they blew away everyone who was in that shitty pub that night so to see how far they've come is amazing and it's great to see them getting more attention with every album release. They've changed a lot too, having started out as an above average post rock band before edging towards that tighter, bouncier sound that they have now. Where they started: and one from the transitional period:

monodrone Now that I see the name in acronym I think you mentioned them before. I may have missed it at the time or not been able to listen and then forgot to come back to the link. Yes, I am rapidly approaching FANGIRL status in regards to this band. Bleah I wish they'd come play the states.

Their new one is on my iPod, too. I like it well. Typically instrumental bands don't do a whole lot for me, so I'm glad this new one has a larger vocal component, even if it's all gang vocals. Just works better for me that way. "Redesigned a Million Times" is a favorite.

If you like post-rock and post-metal, you can download a shit ton of it legally and for free here: post-engineering.bandcamp.com/album/post-engineered-vol-1I have not listened to this and cannot vouch for the quality. I definitely recognized some of these names, but I know very little of this stuff.

And here's a slammin' new tune from Wild Throne, the most exciting up-and-coming rock/prog band in the game today. If you like this at all, check out their beyond excellent 2014 debut EP. New album in October.
This track, along with the earlier released "War is a Romance," both showcase the spastic chops and frenzied rock energy of the band, but lack some of the emotional melodic payload of the EP. I'm still curious to see if this represents a comprehensive change in sound, or if they just like to show off the rockers.
Edit: Oh yeah, and apropos and all, Wild Throne is touring with fucking Mutoid Man, in August. Not coming near me, unfortunately, but if they're coming near you, you have your orders.
