And finally, I have historically been down on Ghost, the Satanic-themed, fuzzed out throwback rockers. It's not them, it's me. I more or less despise throwback acts or anything that recalls 70s fuzz. It's just not my bag. (They're great live, though. Much recommend.)
That's why I'm so surprised and happy to say that the new stuff Ghost is putting out is really working for me. I can't put my fingers on it. It's not noticeably different. It is very definitely Ghost. But the melodies are a little catchier, the bass a little heavier, the guitar a little more sinister. It's everything they are, only better. Here are the tracks so far:
(love the video, too)

LazBro, I left a misplaced message in the Random Thought Thread stating I wasn't incredibly fond of these singles, but I enjoyed the "Cirice" video. I'm chum the water for my trolling and gonna say that I hear a lot of late 80s, early 90s rock balladry in "Cirice". Like Damned Yankees kind of power rock balladry. As for the "Pinnacle to the Pit", I hear 90s alt metal (e.g. Faith No More and Prong). I will definitely give the album a complete listen when it arrives, and I'm not dismissing it because of what I think I hear on the first few listens. What do you hear differently on these singles? The group does keep me intrigued, as their press conferences with the guy who does the Papa Emeritus shtick implies there is a long-term plan as to how the band will develop.

repulsionist I can definitely hear some of the associations, particularly the 90's alt metal side of "Pinnacle," ('dat riff) although I also get a distinct Beatles vibe from the overdub/harmony vocals on the chorus, which I quite like. On the whole I think production is playing a big role here. In the past I've found Ghost's production to be distant and fuzzy, with the bass in particular feeling neutered. Here it's right up front, giving the tracks some heft. I'm not sure if you've ever seen them live, but these two tracks sound the way their live show felt to me. I also like Papa III's voice I think best of the three, and for what it's worth, I like that the lyrics aren't quite so hammy. I like and want that occultish appeal - this is Ghost after all - but it's not so Satan-thumping. Yet. Could just be the choice of singles, but I'm hoping the rest of the album stays on this path.

New Deafheaven on the way, and I am so friggin' excited. Their debut didn't speak to me much, but their sophomore album, Sunbather, was and is my absolute jam! Simultaneously one of my favorite post-metal and black metal records. Can't wait to hear what they have in store for us next. pitchfork.com/news/60538-deafheaven-detail-new-album-new-bermuda/Huh, looks like this is coming out the same day as that Wild Throne record. Hell of a day in music for me.

I found this in my perpetual quest to perfect the art of slack. Praise Bob! (deep Dallas reference). I like this more than the two singles available. Waddu think, LazBro?

Edit: Oh yeah, and apropos and all, Wild Throne is touring with fucking Mutoid Man, in August. Not coming near me, unfortunately, but if they're coming near you, you have your orders. Skipping the CLE. Of course. Dammit. Man, I remember when EVERYBODY used to come here.

No more Mutoid Man dates, but there's a 2nd leg now with Red Fang headlining. Still no CLE, sorry, but there's a Dallas date. Bob does not come from Dallas, but his vital essence coalesced there. Stang moved to your neck of the woods before Y2K, obviously to avoid the impending invasion of Land Mollusks from the Inner Earth.

monodrone Now that I see the name in acronym I think you mentioned them before. I may have missed it at the time or not been able to listen and then forgot to come back to the link. Yes, I am rapidly approaching FANGIRL status in regards to this band. Bleah I wish they'd come play the states. This might be of interest to you: asiwyfa.com/shows. Touring with The Fall of Troy. Let's all listen to The Fall of Troy today!

Damn right, I know a lot of people ragged on them for the last album because it had melodies and less wacky song structures but I loved it all the same. Can't believe I finally get to see them play some songs next week!

After not caring for, even actively disliking, their first two records, I'm shocked to say that Ghost have put out one of my albums of the year. Or they will be on Friday. Here's a full stream:
Full disclosure: I, uh, "found" this record middle of last week and have been hitting it pretty hard. The opening track, "Spirit," is kind of blah, but that's the only blip in an otherwise rock solid set of tunes. Unreleased tracks I like best are "Mummy Dust" and "He Is." Favorite tracks are the ones we've had longest, "Cirice" and "The Pendulum and the Pit." I'll pick it up officially when it releases this Friday.

If you're a prog metal fan at all, BTBAM's just announced fall tour is shit hot! (coming to the CLE, too ) www.facebook.com/BTBAMofficial Between the Buried and Me, Enslaved, Intronaut, Native Construct Four very different bands playing what could ostensibly be grouped under the Progressive Metal banner. I've seen BTBAM a few times and Intronaut once before - during their Valley of Smoke tour, so it was perfect - but I never have seen proggy black metallers Enslaved. Native Construct are a newer band who put out their debut earlier this year. They blend orchestra, opera and 50's pop into their prog metal ambitions. Wild stuff, and while the album isn't perfect, I'm excited about this band: nativeconstruct.bandcamp.com/I've got a tough decision to make this fall. I'll likely have the money and opportunity to see only one show, and the competition is fierce: BTBAM, Enslaved, Intronaut, Native Construct Red Fang, Whores, Wild Throne, Mothership Deafheaven, Tribulation In terms of total line-up, the BTBAM show is unbeatable, but my desire to see both Wild Throne and Deafheaven might win out.

I'm going to my first hardcore show in YEARS right now, off solo to see Shai Hulud. I don't think I've ever gone to a show by myself, but I know no hardcore/metal peeps in Houston, and the wife has the kids so I can't even drag her along. Really, 37 is too old to go to shows, right? I think I'll wind up regretting this, but I loved me some Hulud back in the day.

I mostly go to shows solo, having no metal/hardcore friends except my sister, and there's not a lot of overlap even there. I usually hang to the back during acts I don't care about, move up for acts I do, and read a book on my phone between sets. Rare is the show that I'll speak to anyone.

I don't think my "look into this further, rawk fiends" entry in the "What Are You Listening To?" thread naturally followed through to this early 70s heavy music disinterred from the Ice Floes of Iceland. However, it was supposed to. I correct that error herein by specifically listing the following. Getcher Freak ON!

There were like 30 people there, I just shot the shit with the guitarist at their merch table for a bit. I felt way old though, kids be all 19 and shit. Edit: And the band they are touring with, Lions Lions, is the worst shit I've heard in years. Don't listen to them.

I'm so pleased to say that I really enjoyed this. I was feeling really unsure with Baroness after my warm-at-best reception for Yellow and Green. Granted, this is a single, and Y&G certainly had singles I liked too, but I'm going to hope they'll continue following Mastodon's trajectory, and this is their "Once More Round the Sun making up for The Hunter" moment. Reading that back I just hope it makes sense. #2beersdeep

And wow just wow. I love this track. It's powerful and beautiful and I'm going to listen to it a lot. Oh John Baizley you gorgeous creature.

One of the things I most anticipated about my trip, if you can believe it, is returning home to two solid weeks of metal blogs to catch up on. Happened upon many a good thing, but the highlight has to be this new track from Intronaut. After their sprawling and decidedly softer last album, this marks a triumphant return to their heavier side. The front half pummels while the back half proves their jazzy indulgences don't have to overstay their welcome. I'll be jamming this one many a time before the album drops, I'm sure. Embed is not working for me consistently, so here's a link in case: www.youtube.com/watch?t=33&v=Ujb4E7oEZq0

Given the amount of mathy stuff I like I keep thinking that maybe jazz won't be that bad but there's a real mental block there. I'll go back to it when the album comes out, I'm sure. It put me in mind of East of the Wall who I haven't listened to for far too long so I'm happy enough about how today's turned out.

I loved The Apologist to death, but then Redaction Artifacts left me completely cold. All of the mathy weirdness, but none of the heft of tracks like "Linear Failure" and "Whiskey Sipper." My relationship with Intronaut is similar, actually. At their heaviest they're just incredible, tracks like "Literal Black Cloud" and "Sunderance" stand out. But they spend too great a proportion of their time dicking around. I can't even get through their last album for my boredom. I'm hoping this new track is the direction of the overall album and not, like "Sunderance" from Valley of Smoke, the token "heavy" one.
