I really want to like that - the heavy stuff is amazing but I just can't get on board with the jazzy bits even if they aren't that long. Given the amount of mathy stuff I like I keep thinking that maybe jazz won't be that bad but there's a real mental block there. I'll go back to it when the album comes out, I'm sure. It put me in mind of East of the Wall who I haven't listened to for far too long so I'm happy enough about how today's turned out. East of the Wall frustrate me. I loved The Apologist to death, but then Redaction Artifacts left me completely cold. All of the mathy weirdness, but none of the heft of tracks like "Linear Failure" and "Whiskey Sipper." My relationship with Intronaut is similar, actually. At their heaviest they're just incredible, tracks like "Literal Black Cloud" and "Sunderance" stand out. But they spend too great a proportion of their time dicking around. I can't even get through their last album for my boredom. I'm hoping this new track is the direction of the overall album and not, like "Sunderance" from Valley of Smoke, the token "heavy" one. I can definitely understand that, I'm more sympathetic to the mathy weirdness than Intronauts jazzy meandering or, in a similar vein, Opeth's acoustic folk sections since I listen to a lot of math rock outside of metal whereas I'm never going to go near jazz or folk in isolation. In other news, NEW DEAFHEAVEN IS STREAMING HERE: www.npr.org/2015/09/23/441531170/first-listen-deafheaven-new-bermuda

Cause ya know, I tried so hard with Sunbather and it just never clicked. As I've said before almost everyone whose musical opinion I respect loved that album so I gotta wonder why it didn't resonate with me.

Sunbather is among my top albums of the decade, so of course expectations are very high for New Bermuda. I've heard "Brought to the Water" and "Come Back" each once, and liked them both a lot, but neither hit me so profoundly as "Dream House" did the first time I heard it. This is definitely one of those albums where my anticipation is so hot and my expectations so high that I'm afraid to press play.

Sunbather is among my top albums of the decade SEE? Ah, thanks. BTW, based on your appreciation of ASIWYFA, you might like VASA. Just the single out right now, but debut album in October.

VASA are a decent band, I've seen them a couple of times and they've got a handful of cracking tunes (that one there and Not A Cop are definite stand outs) but they have a tendency to fall into some formulaic traps so things can get a bit samey. Hopefully they'll apply a good filter as to what gets onto the album and what doesn't. First impression of the Deafheaven album is that it's shit hot. There's one particular moment where they turn into Hum for 30 seconds or so before pivoting back into the blasts that I can't shake off that was air punchingly good and as much as I could see the point for the ambient interludes on Sunbather I don't miss them this time round.

Glad to hear a positive first impression on New Bermuda. I won't be able to dive in until tonight. Speaking of the interludes, I think that "Irresistible" is essential to the album. I actually get annoyed when "Dream House" comes up on shuffle and I know that "Irresistible" won't follow it. However, the other two - "Please Remember" and "Windows" - are pointless to me and I think Sunbather would be better without them.

Really liking that VASA tune, monodrone & LazBro. (Honestly, this is really the 3 of us's thread, is it not?) This style of music can tend to get a little same-y though it's true especially when it's purely instrumental. I think that's why my boyfriend can't make it through a Cloudkicker album, though we both really like ASIWYFA, but for me Cloudkicker's "Beacons" tears my heart out with emotion. I'm definitely going to give the new Deafheaven a try. Probably in the car, where I'm most likely to be paying attention to the tunes.

I pressed play. Holy shit. They seem to have hit the sweet-spot between The Mars Volta and At The Drive-In that I always thought must exist but hadn't heard fully exploited until now.

When I first wrote about them here on TI, I described them as sounding link " Deloused-era Mars Volta, only way more unhinged..." I have also pressed play by now, and I'm absolutely in love. 'Dat solo on "Fear Yourself." (Hell, that whole song!)

The bits that go heavier than Mars Volta ever did (thinking of the back half of Shadow Deserts, for example) veer into Dillinger Escape Plan's more straightforward chorus territory too which is a really nice touch. That guitar solo wouldn't be out of place on a Weezer album, shredding like Rivers used to. This whole thing is absurd.

Oh man, the new Windhand. Oh man. Dorothea has just enough inflection in her voice to be dynamic but also somehow perfectly kind of flat and droning to go along with the instrumentation. And the riffs, the riffs. Perfect fucking time of year for this release too, with the seasonal gloomy weather around here. Once I was three tracks in I wasn't even fazed by the 14-minute songs coming up later. Bring it on, Windhand.

I didn't until today but it's not 'LOUD' but it's a great showcase of her voice, nevertheless. forcefieldrecords.bandcamp.com/album/s-t

New music video from Faith No More, for the song "Sunny Side Up": www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPlmhJG_xUMThis convinced reminded me to go back and give Sol Invictus a proper shake. Been jamming it all weekend and I love it. Favorites are "Sunny Side Up," "Rise of the Fall" and "Cone of Shame."

I suddenly have lots to say on this thread! First of all, Smacks, I didn't see you tag me for that recommendation to check out Windhand and Dorothea's solo record. I'll cue it up tomorrow! As for Deafhaven, I also didn't click with Sunbather. In fact, it really, really pissed me off. I adored the music, but hated, hated, hated the vocals. I would pay twice as much as they're asking for a copy of it without the vocal track. LazBro, I'm glad you went back to give Sol Invictus another listen. That's a record I listen to and think, "This is so fucking aweome!" Then it ends and I go back to thinking, "Hm, there's no way FNM managed to make a good album after all these years." My favorites are "Matador", "Cone of Shame" and whatever the last one is. (I, uh, can't be bothered to switch windows to iTunes.) The reason I came over to this thread in the first place was to say that if any of you are into heavy music, run, don't walk to the new Wrekmeister Harmonies album. I read it was "brutal" but I think that term is really overused in metal/post-metal/experimental music journalism, so I had my doubts. Dude. DUUUUDE. It is B-R-U-T-A-L. I spun it for the first time tonight and two hours later, the music is still clawing around inside my skull. Here's the second of two tracks (the first is 30 minutes):

Thanks for the link to the Dorotia Cottrell album. That was gorgeous! It reminded me a little bit of a folksier acoustic Chelsea Wolfe, with a heavy helping of what appeals to me about Mark Lanegan's quieter music. Now, to check out Windhand...

Here's a little weekend LOUD to get your blood pumping.
Defunct hardcore band The Chariot never clicked with me the way mathcore bands they were so often compared to did. Bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge and Botch. Maybe that's because they, to be generous, lived at the very fringe of that sound, or maybe that's because they simply were never that good. Whatever the reason, I was a late comer to what would become their swan song, 2012's One Wing.
My mistake.
One Wing is a bizarre, uproarious and utterly triumphant explosion of a hardcore record. Its treasures are deep and many, with nary a song alike and rewarding surprises all the way to the end. From the moment I pressed play maybe 2 years ago now, I have loved it, and I'm sure it is among my most played records since. It is hard to describe its sound in a single track, but I will limit myself to just one, because this is that rare hardcore record that deserves a full listen, in sequence, and I wouldn't want to spoil it by providing too many here.
Submitted for your approval: "First", simply one of the coolest hardcore songs I've ever heard, and hopefully the example of what makes One Wing a record unlike any other. Don't linger on the pause button. Don't write it off too soon. Just press play and be taken for the ride.

Here's a little weekend LOUD to get your blood pumping. Yay, LOUD thread post to kick off the weekend. I'll be seeing Windhand tonight WOOOOOOOOOO! Opening band is Monolord, fucking perfect opener. My friend that's going with me joked that the whole show will probably consist of about 10 songs. It's going to be cold and rainy and DOOMY in Cleveland tonight, kids.

That's going to be a good time. I run into that same track length problem as a prog fan, too. I remember once standing outside a venue while the openers - a prog death band I love - were moving gear and I over heard one of them say to a fellow bandmate: "Yeah, they're only giving us 30 minutes, so we have to keep it to two songs." They didn't know I was listening, so the random chuckle they got out of me was a little embarrassing.

It obviously is... however: "Matt Walller, a shark tour operator in Australia, found out that AC/DC records caused sharks to change their behaviour." c'mon, Matt Waller. I hate to be 'that guy' (aside: I don't hate it, I love it and that's why I'm doing this dumb internet post) AC/DC are great but they're undeath metal. aaaaand I just watched the video and they were playing Darkest Hour so that's pretty neat but my AC/DC related point still stands, dammit.
