I sometimes wonder if the hipsters are going to try to bring back 8-track.

Hey, I should post something in that August Record Club thread. **There's a snare hit that goes off like a gunshot at the beginning of "Like a Rolling Stone" that gets me every time. There's almost the exact same sound on this one here, which is why I list them back-to-back, It leads into a rollicking opener on a too often over-looked album between a memorable debut and the towering London Calling. I think Cusack lists the preceding Clash side one track one, "Janie Jones", when polled in the film, but I prefer this one. Topper's certainly the superior drummer.

I was *this close* to putting "Regular John" on my list. Good thinking, Muns. I was only kinda aware of Kyuss when they were around but one of my friends (who’d been a big fan) bought that first QOTSA album and from the moment he played it for me and I was instantly hooked. Much like Fugazi with “Waiting Room”, it’s such an amazing introduction and statement of purpose (also worth noting that both of those feature former members of other well-regarded bands who suddenly stepped up their games in unexpected ways).

I'd liked what I'd heard of Kyuss from one of my stoner boyfriends, but not enough to seek them out. The boyfriend after that, tho, got me into QOTSA. Also taught me how to parallel park like a ninja, so I think I came out on top of that one.

And no one saw it.

I was just saying elsewhere that Kathleen Hannah's voice is only suited to a minority of songs in her output, but it's really dragging me down on "Planet You" from the new Julie Ruin album. Plus "Start a Kickstarter for your heart" is poor line made worse by being a repeated chorus.

Plus "Start a Kickstarter for your heart" is poor line made worse by being a repeated chorus. That's too bad. I haven't heard it yet but I thoroughly enjoyed the previous album.

I don't worship Jeebus at all, but gospel music still makes me cry sometimes. Is it just me?

I don't worship Jeebus at all, but gospel music still makes me cry sometimes. Is it just me? Gospel doesn't do it for me, but I love bluegrass with Christian lyrics (and all other kinds). And I still have favorite hymns. If one couldn't appreciate art themed around Christianity or any other religion it would cut out >99% of art throughout history and a sizable amount of contemporary art.

Lee Hazlewood sounds like a dirtbag Neil Diamond and it's really doing it for me right now.

You know how people will sometimes say music was “ruined” by a film? In the case of Beethoven's Seventh Symphony and Zardoz the only possible word is enhanced.

Not sure if this counts as a music thought or a movie thought, but: The better the Bond movie, the shittier the theme song, and vice versa. I gotta disagree - by that logic, For Your Eyes Only would be a good movie and Goldfinger would bad. My Bond Themes ranked (of the films I've seen): 19. 2006 Casino Royale theme (Chris Cornell) 18. The Man With the Golden Gun (Lulu) 17. Octopussy (Rita Coolidge) 16. Die Another Day (Madonna) 15. For Your Eyes Only (Sheena Easton) 14. Moonraker (Shirley Bassey) 13. Goldeneye (Tina Turner) 12. Thunderball (Tom Jones) 11. Skyfall (Adele) 10. The Spy Who Loved Me (Carly Simon) 9. From Russia With Love (aka James Bond is Back by John Barry) 8. The World is Not Enough (Garbage) 7. Goldfinger (Shirley Bassey) 6. *1967 Casino Royale theme (Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass) 5. View to a Kill (Duran Duran) 4. Live and Let Die (Paul McCartney) 3. Diamonds are Forever (Shirley Bassey) 2. Dr. No (original Bond Theme by John Barry) 1. You Only Live Twice (Nancy Sinatra)

Pick an artist who succumbed to crappiness, and detail the moment of heartbreak.
Rod Stewart, after Tonight's The Night Simple Minds (though it pains me to say it), after Sparkle In The Rain

Every time I hear a Police song, I wonder what happened to that guy.

Rod Stewart, after Tonight's The NightSimple Minds (though it pains me to say it), after Sparkle In The Rain My interest in Rod Stewart doesn't extend beyond Never a Dull Moment, but it's considerable before then. Incidentally, behold the cover art of the following year's comp. Every Picture is deservedly cherished, and then look at the depths he sunk to. I'm willing to give the first of those Great American Song Book ones a fair hearing, but I don't expect much.
