There's one of these for the Movies board, so I decided to rip it off...
"Instant Crush" is the best song on Random Access Memories. There are other great songs on the album, but it's not even a competition.

I have spent hours watching live grindcore concerts from the 1980s on YouTube. I have not wasted my time. Ask me which are my favorites!

If the best tracks from LCD Soundsystem's debut had been put into one 50-minute album instead of among 140 minutes over two disks, it would have been one of my Top Ten albums of the decade instead of just Really Good.

I remember buying this on vinyl and realizing later that it didn't have Yeah or Beat Connection and feeling super ripped off. Every time I listen to the new Astronoid album (which has been a lot) I just want to headbang and jump around and pump my fists in jubilation. This probably would not fly on my walks to/from work though.

I'm DJing a wedding later. Going through the playlist together, Ma Freshenmeyer keeps saying to me is that I play too many "obscure" songs - occasionally slipping in a non-hit from a well-known artist. A b-side, or an album track that I happen to be thinking of as I go through how to wind some of these songs together.
This should be OK, right? I'm not playing something that you cannot listen or dance to, and it happens to weave in between songs and help transition tempos and moods. Or should it be strictly the hits?

I think it depends on the wedding party. Have you met these people? Do you think they would appreciate the 'obscurities' or be confused by them? How drunk will everybody be? A really drunk crowd tends to just want hits. Just keep in mind that a 'dull' song choice can clear any dance floor. At my hipster former roommate's wedding, he made the fatal mistake of slipping in "I Can Change" by LCD Soundsystem (instead of "Daft Punk is Playing at My House") and everybody made a run for the bar at once. As a DJ, you always want to play stuff that interests you and I know hits are boring, but it's what the people want when they're celebrating.

Pops Freshenmeyer don’t listen to moimoi . This wedding demands a playlist consisting entirely of Xenakis, Bauhaus deep cuts, and dark ambient classics.

I've long had the dream of being in a cover band that only played awesome deep cuts, subverting what a cover band generally is. It's my approach to Halloween: anyone can dress up like a vampire, I'd rather be the guy who really gets a few people to flip out.

I had met them once before, and the entire lead-up, it seemed like things were played kind of loosey-goosey, so I stuck to the hits. This was the 2nd least planned wedding I've ever been to (besides that of my father re-marrying my step-mom). Nobody danced to anything. They even made requests, and still just sat, nodding their head, rather than dance. No matter to me -- they payed me a little bit extra by the end of the night, invited me to take a tour of the venue (a historic site that included an underground tunnel that led to an underground museum that was once a speakeasy!), fed me, and asked me to stay for a little bit longer than the time we agreed upon. So... Good Job, Pops!(?)

It's my approach to Halloween: anyone can dress up like a vampire, I'd rather be the guy who really gets a few people to flip out. There was an awesome Weezer cover band Ma and I saw last year. They played a few key hits, but they dared to venture into their less appreciated songs as well. Still, I've also wanted to be in such a cover band. Even got a great name for one with a great gimmicky concept: A cover duo that looks and sounds like Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle, but instead of playing songs by Simon and Garfunkle, we play songs from their respective solo catalogs. We would be named (wait for it!): Aul Simon, Part Garfunkle.

I listened to Red Hot Chilli Peppers for the first time and liked it, though it's their most recent album and I get the sense their new stuff is not exactly held in high esteem. What's 'good' Red Hot Chilli Peppers for fans of the band?

What's 'good' Red Hot Chilli Peppers for fans of the band? Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Mother's Milk are probably the only whole albums I would bother to revisit anymore, though I can find tracks I still love from throughout. I stopped listening to them after By the Way, but even that has tracks I like.

We would be named (wait for it!): Aul Simon, Part Garfunkle. This is genius! Although, who wants to hear Garfunkle's solo song? (I'm assuming that horrid "New York" song from Concert in Central Park is the one and only song he ever wrote as a solo musician.)

(I came here to type what's below but Escort came on the radio and I was reminded how much fun that show was.)
People say that AVC's music coverage is weak. Consider that the recently-reviewed albums that received A- or better have 18 comments (Blood Orange), 34 comments (Deerhoof), 20 comments (Mitski), 23 comments (Sumac), and 186 comments (Garbage). The recent reviews that have larger comment turnout are for long-lived acts like Blink-182 (97 so far), Red Hot Chili Peppers (169), and Garbage (186), and the comments are at least as much about history as about the new stuff. The coverage is pretty decent, I think.

The coverage is pretty decent, I think. I don't think the coverage is weak; I think the writing is weak. I read a couple recent reviews to my brother, who is a semi-professional writer and who works in higher education. He agreed: a lot of AVC's music reviews sound like high school journalism - no coherent critical perspective, a lot of abuse of the thesaurus and meaningless rhetorical flourishes. It's the writing of people who are skilled at stringing words together, but don't know the topic well enough to actually have something to say. Of course, AVC is a pop culture website and not a serious critical forum (when I want more substantial music criticism, I go to Noisey or Stereogum, which has improved to a surprising degree). But when you have actual great writers like Iggy, A.A. Dowd, Mike D'Angelo, Rabin, etc. writing in other sections, the disparity in quality is much more apparent.

Buddy Holly screams a scream in Oh Boy that's as thrilling as any scream by John Lennon or Kurt Cobain.

New Order was playing the the cafe this morning—it was “Paradise” off of Brotherhood but I felt kind of—not disappointed with myself, but old—about having to look up both the name of the album since I used to know that discography by the back of my hand in college (and “Paradise” is the first track!). I wouldn’t say everybody goes through a Factory phase of some sort in college but it seemed pretty damn common when I was there in the late 2000s, which was also the era of Corbijn’s Closer and…looking it up 24 Hour Party People actually came out years earlier, but I first saw it in college and that’s what counts. Hearing early New Order in a cafe seemed to be a particular marker for ur-hipsterdom in Chicago ca. 2008.

The most annoying part about the 4 Non Blondes song is that it's titled "What's Up?"

I have this friend who is about 10 years younger than I am. Tonight he texts me "I'm thinking I should try listening to some Beck. Thoughts?"
OMG, I felt old.
Edited to add: You guys, this text conversation is depressing.
Me: Um, haven't you heard any Beck songs before? Him: Don't think so? Me: Loser? Where It's At? Him: Maybe? Me: Two Turn Tables and a Microphone? Him: What? Me: How have you not heard Odelay??? Him: I was 7 when that album came out!

Earnest uncomplicated happiness in audio form.
