After eight hours - EIGHT HOURS! - of mandatory vapid indie folk music, I'm scrubbing my ears and brain out with LOUD HAWKWIND. Speaking of Hawkwind, Nik Turner is playing a venue near me next month, billing himself as Nik Turner's Hawkwind. Should I go? Ha! You know what? If you have any affection for hapless, old-man cosmic spiritual wankery, then yes. But be prepared to cross the picket line of "real" Hawkwind fans!

The E Street Band's 'Professor' Roy Bittan is from Rockaway Beach! Everything about this man delights me. Also, I wasn't sure Rockaway Beach was a real place, as it could easily be what it sounds like, a Ramones fantasy land with a band in every cove. The unifying feature between Bob Seger's "The Fire Inside" (his best song) and David Bowie's "Station to Station" (if not his best song, certainly his most epic).

Yeah, I mentioned him playing on Station To Station a few pages back. I hadn't known, until someone loaned me a vinyl copy - and there his name was. (He's also on Bat Out Of Hell, which ... yeah, all right, that's fine.)

Kate Tempest is getting added to my smash-the-radio-now list, though no one tops reigning kings Dan le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip.

I preferred Avenged Sevenfold when they didn't sound like Dream Theatre.

The Jesus and Mary Chain's "Fargone And Out" could sound really cool if covered by a country band. Get on that, musicians of Nashville.

I decided to pick up Mother Love Bone, never having gotten around to it before. It's not bad, but it sounds to me like a cross between Pearl Jam and Guns n Roses.

Maybe the Trump presidency will usher in a new wave of American hardcore punk rock music.

Nineteen eighty-TWO. How far we've come. Such progress. Much freedom. Wow.

Honestly, I think "Broadway The Hard Way" by Frank Zappa might be one of the best politically-charged albums. Yeah, the televangelist and Reagan stuff might be dated, but update the names/scandals and I think the core ideas are very relevant.
Give it a listen if you'd like. It's satirical like most Zappa music, so it might cheer you up.

I used to love exploring record shops, flea markets and other sources for vinyl treasures. But somebody broke into my old place a year or so ago, and stole every one of my albums, maybe 300 or so. A lot of those were rarities, and a few were virtually irreplaceable and very distinctive (local bands, regional stuff, one or two my cousin played on, a few signed, etc). They ended up somewhere. I know that if I were ever to find some of those very rare records in a record store, especially if there were more than one, it would end up involving the cops one way or another. I just can't bring myself to even walk into a used record store anymore.

The review of the new Metallica album today had me thinking, and then a commenter linked to this discussion of Lars Ulrich's skill. The holidays in government are a terrible slog, and this job is already boring as can be. Perhaps I will do my own VS article? Metallica doesn't have an insanely long discography, just ten albums and a covers album (even if they're each quite long). I'm familiar with everything of theirs that was ever played on the radio. I was a big fan of the live orchestra-backed album. This seems doable.

Okay, but you have to include the double album they did with Lou Reed (which they seem to not count as part of their official discography). Although if you did you might be the first person to actually listen to the whole thing.

Lots of old people seated around me at the Symphony tonight. Was curious to see how they'd react to the Corigliano piece. At intermission, the woman next me to asked her husband, "So, what did you think of that very powerful and sometimes hideous piece?"

I think I've found a class of musician I can completely write off as utterly irredeemable: white English girls rapping. Kate Tempest, Lady Sovereign, Let's Eat Grandma: no other group makes me want to tear my ears off like this. You can take any one of the four defining characteristics out and be great, like M.I.A., but all of them together makes it toxic.

Could we add Commonwealth rappers like Iggy Azalea and Die Antwoord?

Dear God is You Want It Darker good. But, like "Lazarus," it seems like it couldn't have been done by anyone who wasn't coming to terms with their impending death.

They just have this flashy trashy other-worldly vibe that is so appealing to me - more like cartoon characters than anything else. Then again, style counts for a lot in my book; I'd never have noticed them without the videos, and I would never just listen to the records. Dunno - zef style just makes me laugh. A++ for surreal stupidity.

Die Antwoord is pretty great, but they're basically unlistenable on album. I've seen them live, though, and those guys know how to put on a show. It was the best combination of nauseating, hilarious, and danceable. I've never seen that many dicks on a stage before I saw them perform "Evil Boy".

The new Rolling Stones album (of blues covers) got a good review in the Guardian. I'm pleased. Wonder if they'll see it as a capper to their recording career, leaving by the same door they came in.

A lot of metal lyrics are the starkest illustration we have that a little learning is a dangerous thing.

The remastered tracks on the posthumous Bowie album "Legacy" are like ear porn.
