OK, hi. I'm Salvador, real name Jose. I don't comment a lot on The AV Club but when I do, I get a kick out of the people I interact with there and Ice Cream Planter convinced me to join here so here I am. Am I doing this right? In this country, you gotta make the money first. Then when you get the money, you get the power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women.

Nice to meet you. I love birds, films, and comedy! Now, see.... I have a problem with this.because I don't know this person/screenname from the AVC.
annnnnd they won't, when asked, do something like most people do here in the introduce yourself thread and say a little something about who they are and how they wound up joining our little community here. And that makes me worry about the safety of this little community. Now, I know there's an approval process, but frankly, just being told " Post-Lupin vouched for them, I think," or " Douay-Rheims-Challoner had to approve them, right," doesn't exactly make me any more comfortable given the extreme lengths some people have gone to in order to disrupt this place or harass members. Now, I'm not saying I think StrungOutSongbird would do that sort of thing, but there is pretty much the entire fucking internet out there for people who want to remain entirely anonymous. People on here have varying degrees of anonymity, but in general, it's very low. People have shared incredibly personal things on here not simply of the "shoutbox overshare theater" variety, @ lovely bones Lady Bones, but of the really personal and sometimes emotionally devastating variety. There have been people who have joined up on here after relatively little time on the AVC -- or sometimes just a lot of lurking and no posting. But they've made an effort to get known by the TI community. This isn't a place for gimmicks or coy anonymity. No one should be forced to share anything more than they're comfortable with, but if they're not comfortable with everyone having some idea of who they are, being able to see the sort of contributions and personality they bring to the table, and how they wound up joining us.... I'd honestly say that this is simply the wrong place for them.

idiotking Currently, I approve all new registrations myself. It is contingent on either confirming that person is a poster at the AVC (and this is not a fake account) or, yes, an existing poster vouching for that person. The majority of registrations we have had since I implemented this policy have not been approved because they failed to meet that criteria (not that all or most of them were illegitimate, I just didn't get any confirmation otherwise.)

I really do appreciate all the effort you've put into this to help avoid another serious attack on members. Though I know a procedure took place, however, I don't think it's a real substitute for being at least open enough with other members to introduce themselves so that we know how we know them, and how they know us! You hear that, StrungOutSongbird? TI madness is no excuse for TI rudeness!

Can we get secret handshakes and tattoos? I am glad I am grandfathered in here because I am not sure I could have gotten in under the new rules. I have lurked about the AVClub since the days when you did not have to have an account to comment, but I have never been a high volume poster. Even if Disqus had not eaten several accounts I would probably still only have a few thousand comments. There are probably thousands of users in that range from a few hundred to a few thousand comments. I am still finding occasional names and avatars I do not recognize with upwards of 10,000 comments at the old country.
All in all I agree with Idiot King that we need to be careful, but we got along surprisingly well even before the new rules. We are still kind of a backwater, but given how much people have shared on here, then it makes sense to have a few more hoops.

I probably would have been passed over under the new rules too, given my primary Disqus account had sub-1k comments and I basically only hung out on the Babylon 5, Farscape, and DS9 discussions. So uh. Thanks for letting me into the club. PRAISE BE TO Douay-Rheims-Challoner! *immediately gets shadowbanned*

Just to quickly clarify; the registration rules aren't judging people on how often they've posted on the AVC, just that we can confirm they have a Disqus account and this account has registered at this website (so someone is not using the name of a registered AVCer to avoid getting banned again), the intention is basically to prevent access to this forum from trolls.
But if we did have some kind of arbitrary elitist restriction regular activity in the Farscape or Babylon 5 boards would mean automatic admission.

I'd been lurking the AV Club comments section since they were a thing, having found The Onion when they published Our Dumb Century. They've always been the best part of the articles, even back when the articles were generally much better.
I was raised in rural Maryland but lived in the Tampa area for my teenage and young adult years, with four years away in the Air Force. My wife and I met in Florida and have been together for over ten years, and we've been living in a very rural part of northern Vermont for the last eight years. We are now right in the middle of a move to New York, so I suppose I'll have to change my name to Urbnurr Jururr within the next couple of months.
That's about as much as I can stand to write about myself in one sitting, so you'll have to gather the rest from the context provided in my posts. It's cool to have a more direct means of communication and discussion with some of the long-time AV Club commentariat. I'll have to post an AMA at some point.

I should probably reintroduce myself since I haven't posted basically since the great disqus debacle when this forum was made. I was planning to do reviews at some point here, but then work got busy and life happened. I ended up commenting on some random Teti article and Dr. Jacoby responded to me. I remembered his avatar from early Farscape reviews and asked if he'd kept up. He had until Season 2, but hadn't with Season 3 so he asked if I wanted to watch together and comment in the What's On Tonight section. Ever since then I've been commenting a lot more frequently, but still not much. I'm probably mostly known for reading every review of whatever series I'm watching and upvoting 5 year old comments. Here's my avatar there:
(Qoi, as shown in my signature.) I'm back because I have nothing to do at work at the moment and because I only go to like 4 sites on the internet, so there's only so much to do.

Yeah, I hate when it's slow at work and you keep refreshing AV Club and there isn't anything new. If only my work firewall didn't block gaming sites, I'd be able to increase my slacking off by 150%.

I'm working on a thread in the game section that might help with your slacking off if you're interested. It's a text based game, but I've found it to be a good distraction. Probably a bit too good of one, in my case...

Hey guys, I'm Melody, and I currently reside in Gainesville, Florida. I'm finishing undergrad in about a month and a half and have little idea of what I want to do. I've been reading/lurking/very sporadically posting on the AVC (as TheTravelingLansburys) for six years and registered here a long time ago but just never explored these boards further.

Hi! I'm Wafflicious and I made this account a while ago and promptly forgot all about it. I would have kept forgetting about it too, but I think I'll be hanging with you guys here until I stop being stalked at the AVC.
I've been hanging around for many a year (the AV Club got me through the worst of the boredom when I lived in Japan in 2004. I've always had Hank Venture as an avatar despite being of the female persuasion. But to be fair, I am often making this face when I post so it works out well.

Howdy, I'm Dr. Jacoby. I go by the same name over on the AVC... I'm not a big time poster but I've been around on the AVC for about 6 years or so, and I'm active enough there that a few people here will recognize me. Oh and I'm friends with tyrone, who mentioned me a few posts above, and was the one who got me to take another look at this place. I've been lurking on here since close to the time these boards were created but never really found much to post about, but I'm trying to finally get more active here. I'm a big tv and movie watcher... right now I'm in mourning for my beloved Looking, enjoying slowly making my through Bloodline, and just trying to hold out until Season 3 of Hannibal finally takes off. And I'm currently reading The Magician King by Lev Grossman (loving it) and How Fiction Works by James Wood (barely tolerating it).
