There are ellipses... and ellipses . . . but my favorite is the one-character ellipsis… you can tweet 420 dots with the single-character ellipsis… Being in publishing, one thing I'm obsessed with is the difference between hyphens, n-dashes, and m-dashes. - vs. – vs. —. GLORIOUS. I always want to use em dashes but I feel self-concious about it because they're so showy. To compensate I use hyphens too much (and improperly - I use them where I should probably use colons or commas). |

I like to goad grammar nazis. They're like fundamentalists, they're so easy to get riled up - "nooo!" they say, "Don't you know that God decreed how to use apostrophes? And that putting an apostrophe in the wrong place makes a sentence completely unintelligible!" Thing I recently just used - the Icelandic term for grammar nazi translates literally into English as Comma Fuckers. |

They can be helpful or necessary sometimes, though.

I was on the AVC occasionally, but the Alternative Nation and My Year of Flops features made me a regular reader. Like other sites I visit, I rarely bothered to read the comments, but then I got drawn in and started posting over the summer. |
