I saw that story. Very good of them to keep doing that. The Isotopes lost their opener last night in embarrassing fashion. Jorge de la Rosa was the starter, presumably on a rehab assignment before joining the Rockies again. He did fine but the guy they put in after him was basically pitching batting practice. One cool thing about the stadium is there's a bit of Simpsons stuff inside it.

One of the few pleasures of being sick this past week was that I got to hear the first couple of Tigers games on local radio. What sucked was that I couldn't go to a bar and watch it as nature intended. Still taking the excellent record thus far as a net positive.

Ha! Dbacks got 10 hits and 6 runs (5 earned) off Clayton Kershaw tonight. Shades of last year's May 17th drubbing of Kershaw. Another HR for Paul Goldschmidt.
Archie Bradley had his major league debut. He's the DBacks top pitching prospect. 6IP, 0ER, 1H, 6K, 4BB. His command was a bit shaky, but otherwise he looked good.
And he got his first MLB hit vs Clayton Kershaw. Sure, he promptly got picked off. But, it still counts!
DBacks may still finish in last place, but they're still going to be fun to watch.
Also, ha ha, Giants! Got crushed by the Padres. This was a good night in baseball.

It's always interesting to see who has a really hot start and then who among them have crashed and burned by mid May.

At first I thought the Rays were having bad luck with injuries. Then I saw the Rangers.

At first I thought the Rays were having bad luck with injuries. Then I saw the Rangers. I fully expect every player in the entire Rangers system to be on the DL by the All-Star Break, and the team is having to start a bunch of plucky Little Leaguers--who all promptly go down with injuries. By the end of the season, it'll be "Buy a Ticket to the Game, Get an Automatic At-Bat".

At first I thought the Rays were having bad luck with injuries. Then I saw the Rangers. Royals are getting there too. First Rios, then Gordon, then Escobar, now Holland. All key parts of the team, all coming just as momentum was on our side. Ugh.

For the third time in franchise history, the Mets start the season 9-3.
First time this happened was in 1985, when they ended the season with 96 total wins.
Second time this happened was in 1986, when they went to the World Series and won.

This feeling is what Yankees fans must have felt throughout the 1990s. Of course since I cannot have all the nice things, the Korean baseball team I follow (who usually does pretty well) is in second to last place in the league at present.

I'm happy with the Padres' 8-5 start. The new guys all seem to be working out pretty well and the couple of holdovers they have from last year's team are also contributing. Also, after a rough opening night, our local Triple A team, the Albuquerque Isotopes, is off to a 7-4 start. Tickets are pretty cheap so we plan on catching a couple of games a month.

I was at the game when it became 10-3! And the two things I can come away from yesterday's game: 1) The bats are finally coming alive for the Mets! 2) Our middle relief pitchers are are going to give me a heart-attack. 3) Matt Harvey's walk-up music is classy:

Padres got a 14-3 win over the Rockies tonight, scoring 5 runs in the 1st inning and 5 again in the 5th.

HEY! THE METS ARE 11-3! LAST TIME THEY DID THIS? 1986!
HIT IT BOYS!
Notes: Props to local band Seanchai to learn the oft-forgotten second verse.
Yo La Tengo's version is the best, second only to the original, but it only so good because their band name is based on NYMets lore.
I did not use the shitty 80's version, or the one where Mike Francesca sings 'Meet the Mets' on his show, because he is a turd.
I encourage everyone to otherwise Meet the Mets when possible, especially if you are from the NYC-metro areas, or maybe Philly, or Atlanta, or Miami, or Washington D.C., or Boston.

I'm more excited about the Padres' season than my home team's season, this year. I've got a big soft spot for the Padres because we went to Petco on our honeymoon. I'm really enjoying watching them this season.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a HR for my birthday this year. I mean, probably not exactly because of my birthday. But still. I posted on Twitter that I wanted him to hit a HR for my birthday, and he did. So, it totally counts! And the DBacks wished me Happy Birthday on Twitter, which was my biggest accomplishment of the week.
Also, I went to their game vs Texas tonight. Had a friend give me a free ticket behind home plate! Woo! When I left the game it was 1-1. By the time I got to my car it was 5-1 Texas. Apparently I left at the right time.
I am going to Friday's game, and the game next Tuesday. 3 games in 8 days, and all the tickets were free! Wooo!

So, based on the '86 Mets, can we assume that this year's Mets are all constantly high on coke?

So, based on the '86 Mets, can we assume that this year's Mets are all constantly high on coke? There's actually a coke shortage in NYC right at the moment, although heroin is just fucking EVERYWHERE. I know so many people who've died of heroin overdoses it's seriously a bummer. On the bright side, the Yankees' pitching is looking better than I'd hoped, although the offense is still a war crime.

Meth gets all the attention because of Breaking Bad, but it's not as big of a deal here.

My hometown was pretty much the heroin OD capital during the 90s. It was rather interesting in college seeing one of the TV newsmagazines do a story on the epidemic while the reporter was standing in my high school's parking lot. I only knew one person who died of an OD, and I hadn't been friends with him since middle school, but yeah, it was pretty frightening.
Oh, getting back to baseball...um...it looks like the AL West is going to be a serious contender for AL Worst.

Yeah, the AL West is just painful. I always want it to be good but it just refuses to be. I loved the early/mid 2000s Angels teams and it was great when Oakland, Texas, and Seattle were all competitive with them.

I feel like I'm in some kind of alternate universe. The NY Mets on a ten game winning streak? What sort of devilry is this?

Welp. Kansas City turned from America's Sweetheart into America's Bad Boys so gradually, I didn't even notice.

As a Rangers fan, I am not happy about Josh Hamilton's return to Arlington. There was a lot of concern that his years of drug use would eventually catch up to him, and it seemed to do exactly that about halfway through the 2012 season. By the end of the year, he seemed to be barely trying, which is why I wasn't the least bit saddened to see him go off to Anaheim. Add his relapse and his tumultuous personal life, and I can't imagine him being productive once he returns to the lineup. I really hope I'm wrong, and I also really hope he gets his life back on track, but I worry that he'll bring far more negatives to the clubhouse than positives.

I was kind of rooting for Hamilton before he left Texas. He and Ron Washington seemed to be holding each other up for a while. Now look at the both of them.
