i figure this is the corner of the internet that would appreciate the fact that during a meeting on the mound Rangers Stadium played the theme song from True Detective

Nationals - Mets game was an instant classic. Also, home runs everywhere for everybody.

Another Mets fan here, and yeah, this is still a team putting the pieces together but I;m hoping it pays off if Wheeler can show progress (hopefully to the same extent that Harvey was able to) and real excited to see what Syndergaard does when he get the call up which should be in June. If they finish at .500 it would be an accomplishment, but they could be fun to watch if that starting pitching works out. Same here. I think viewing 2014 as an extended 2015 spring training is the only way to stay positive. But seeing what Wheeler and Syndergaard can do will be fun. Wonder who will be this year's Marlon Byrd? Ya did it, Richie. Ya had to go and mention Byrd! [Breaks a bat over his head] GRAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

Annnnd the Mets are back to having a shitty bullpen that thoroughly wastes a fine start by Gee. It looks like the injuries and closer issues started earlier this year. at least the offence did show some life...other than the strike outs.

How many Mets fans do we have here? More than we should. According to this survey the Mets and A's are the only two* teams that do not have a plurality of fans in any U.S. county
* Technically neither do the Blue Jays, but they probably do in whatever Ontario's equivalent of counties are.

The Yankees have opened their season going 1-2 in a series against the Astros, which isn't a great thing, because the Astros are not good. CC Sabathia was pretty awful in the season opener, and then a solid start from Hiroki Kuroda was wasted by anemic offense in game two. And in the third game, it looked as if the Yanks would quite likely be swept, as Ivan Nova got off to an awful start, but generally managed to work himself out of the situations he got himself into, and he finished the day with a very respectable 3.18 ERA. And a couple of guys came through on offense, including Jeter, Garnder, Suzuki, and, starting his first game in the majors and going 2 for 3, 2 runs and an RBI, newly designated infield utility man Yangervis Solarte. The Yankees won 4-2, David Robertson got his first save as the official closer and seems to have made it look easy, and there's reason for optimism that the team can get their shit together, especially if Sabathia's poor start proves to be just that. It's certainly way too early to make judgments either way.

It's certainly way too early to make judgments either way. Sabathia is still a pretty big question-mark, but I'm generally encouraged by the fact that since the first 2 innings of the season, the pitching staff has only given up 5 runs. I don't have a ton of faith in Robertson -- it seemed like one of those classic games where they'd blow their slim lead to extend their misery -- but I'm glad he made it look easy. The offense will come around eventually, or at least be better than they've been. Though I'd love to see a random guy like Solarte break through in an otherwise-anemic infield, a la Cano back in the day.

What really kills the Astros is, well, everything else on the field.

One series down and I am cautiously optimistic about the Giants. Timmy looked better than he has in a while last night, Tim Hudson did great, Belt and Pagan have been killing it. But then I remember last April, when Crawford was hitting homers all over the place and Zito still looked as good as he inexplicably and miraculously did in the playoffs. It's a long season.
In related news, I'm going to the Dodgers/Giants game on Saturday and feeling pretty good about the probably Bumgarner/Maholm match up.

About to see what the White Sox 4th and 5th starters look like. Paulino looked like a mess, and not even John Danks knows if he will ever be John Danks again.

If there's any Dodgers fans out there just know that at this moment, I am laughing at you.
And it feels so good.

7 games in and I am already writing off the DBacks season. The pitching is so, so, so bad. They just blew a series to the Giants in which they LED 3 of the 4 games by significant margins. And the bullpen in two games gave up 12 runs in the 7th inning or later. Which caused them to lose the series 1-3. After already losing two games to the Dodgers in Australia.
And then today, they got blown out by the Rockies 12-2.
Did I mention that the pitching is very bad?

TANAKA!!! 7 IP, 2 ER, 8 K.
And today Pineda makes his Yankees debut, which I'm cautiously optimistic about.
Also, in infielder utility man news, holy living fuck is Yangervis Solarte better than Eduardo Nunez in an albeit tiny sample size.

The 2014 Nationals have struck out 53 batters in their first 4 games, which is the all-time record for the first four games of a season. But we live in very strikeout-heavy times; also in the top five are Yu Darvish's 2013 Rangers and the 2014 Angels. (#2 is the 1961 Cleveland Indians.)

So, one cycle through the rotation, and the Yankees are 2-3. On the bright side, four of the starters had very good starts, and the best of those starts came from Masahiro Tanaka and Pineda in their Yankees debuts. Robertson and most of the bullpen have been very good. And Jacoby Ellsbury, Brett Gardner, and rookie infielder utility man Yangervis Solarte all had very good weeks. On the other hand, Sabathia, our nominal ace, was pretty awful in his first start. David Phelps has not been good thus far (though I'm reasonably optimistic that this will turn around and he'll be at least a decent reliever this season. The offense on the whole has been pretty anemic, with just 14 runs, which is good for 24th in the league. And, in a massive not-shock, Mark Teixera is hurt again! Not-yay! It's still early in the season though, and I'm looking forward to watching today's game against the Blue Jays, to see if CC can bounce back as he attempts to learn to make up for his loss in velocity with an improved command. We'll see how this goes.

@randomusername Aside from CC's first two innings and Phelps the pitching has been pretty great. The problem is the McCann/Beltran/Soriano heart of the order isn't doing crap. This is also their longest homerless streak to start a season since like 1990, I think? The Bronx Bombers they are no more.

How many Mets fans do we have here? I was at the first win of the season last week. Watching those two home runs from Duda sail overhead was. . . well, it was a magic feeling. Also, freezing, wet cold, and it was free shirt Friday.

This is a good cross section of people who will appreciate this. So I went to the Dodgers/Giants game on Saturday and for some reason Jason Bateman was the guest PA announcer. Most of the time he just said the names very dry and basically, but there were a couple good moments of humor.
Currently the Giants have 3 players named Brandon, and they're playing 1st, 2nd, and shortstop, and they were consecutive in the batting order. So once when the third Brandon is up Bateman said, "Another Brandon. Crawford."
And then later when Pablo Sandoval hit a 3 run homer, Bateman gives an exasperated sigh and then dejectedly announces Buster Posey. Who promptly hits a home run.

OMG, the DBacks pitching is even worse than I feared. It is so, so, so, so, so bad.
In weird statistics news, the DBacks have also gone 0-4 on Opening Day in 2014. Today was the 4th Opening Day game they have lost this season.

Hey, the Yankees are doing pretty well! Just swept the Cubs, after excellent performances from Tanaka and Pineda in a doubleheader yesterday. In impressive-but-so-specific-as-to-be-pretty-meaningless stats news, Tanaka's 28 strikeouts in his first three MLB games are the most of any Yankees pitcher in their first three starts. He also has a pretty damn fantastic ERA of 2.05. And Pineda's even better with a 1.00. Weirdly, that's the last two starters in the rotation that are currently the best of the bunch, although Kuroda has also been solid to this point, Nova has improved, and, if he'd stop pitching one anomalous incredibly shitty inning per start, Sabathia's pitching would be pretty decent too. Adam Warren and Dellin Betances have been two of the brightest spots in a generally solid bullpen while starter Robertson is hurt (though I hear he could be hack as soon as Tuesday). On the hitting side of things, Ellsbury continues to be fantastic, Carlos Beltran has been pretty great, and when he plays, Ichiro Suzuki has been very good (although I don't expect that to last long). On the other hand, shockingly, our really old and/or injury prone infield is getting hurt a lot. What a surprise! So hopefully that doesn't drag us down too much. At least we're currently off to a better start than any of our divisional opponents.

So I just drunk-watched the 8th inning of Twins-Jays. Holy shit. Eight walks, three wild pitches, two uncontested steals, and it all could have been even worse because Eduardo Nunez swung at two obvious balls and one of them became a groundout. Only one hitter got an actual hit in the inning. Just astonishing.
At the end, the Twins announcer - who, you know, should have been excited because his Twins just scored 6 runs - instead sounded resigned to a horrible fate. All he said was, "You have just watched eight men walked in one inning."
