I didn't know they were going to pull this so early in the season and it dawned on me halfway through the episode that it would probably happen shortly. Took everything in my power not to spoil @ifwewait just with my obviously enthusiasm, but I was sitting on the very edge of the couch bouncing excitedly. My wife and I were both cheering, much to Erik Adams' probable disapproval. My wife: "Oh my god, is Joffrey really going to die? Die YOU FUCKER DIE!!!" I was clapping and fist pumping. When it was clear he was finally dead, I looked at MrsLangdonAlger and said, exhausted, "Finally... though I would've liked him to suffer for awhile. While knowing he was going to die. And by who's hand." *starts rethinking calling himself a pacifist*

As a book reader, I was most interested in the set-up. I loved how they threw in a ton of clues and misdirection. Obviously almost everyone had some motive and almost everyone had some means between the pie and the kicked around goblet. Famous last words: "Hurry up, this pie is dry."

He was being SUCH an exceptional shithead. I kept fantasizing about Sansa or Margery snapping and just gutting him right during the feast, then he started choking and I couldn't believe it. I didn't believe, it, until he turned blue and started bleeding out of every orifice. And oh how you must have been biting your tongue when I was complaining about placesetting the first two eps last week.

Maybe deliberate to show poison vs choking. Then again if I remember my old CPR classes, people cannot make any noise when they are choking. Yeah, when NO sound is coming out it's real bad. My mom, a nurse, pointed that out to me once when I struggled to tell her I was choking. Calmly sitting and barely paying attention, "If you can talk you're not chocking." Ah, mother's day is next month. My mom told me that too! She's not a nurse, though. I imagine it was mostly to get me to stop being a drama queen.

I haven't watched the latest episode but as a book reader I know what's coming so let me just say Jack Gleeson is a fantastic young actor (who, as I like to point out, I went to the same kindergarten and university as) and I'll miss his wonderfully obnoxious-brat-ruthless-tyrant performance on the show.

That would have been pretty satisfying if Sansa had grabbed her father's reforged sword out of his wimpy hands (wolf bitten) and emulated her mother on that Frey girl. Satisfying, but probably out of character.

Oh hey! That was a thing, huh?
Unpopular opinion: while the Red Wedding was a big whoop-de-doo, I didn't really enjoy watching any of those characters anyway. Joffrey, on the other hand, I had a blast watching him. So I was kinda bummed that he died. He was terrific fun to hate.
Okay, and we're doing guessing on who done it, word? Word. Tywin makes as much sense as anyone, that seems valid. I had to look up "who the fuck is tommen", because I'd totally forgotten there was a little brother at all. Could it have been that court jester dude who whisked Sansa away? Maybe he was just like fuck it, I hate this kid.
Or what about the dark magic people? Whose side are they on again? When they start killin' folks, it's usually so they can do some magicin', right? So might they have remotely poisoned Joffrey's booze with the...souls of their burned-up uncles or whatever?
I'm terrible at guessing games because I can't keep most of the characters straight anyways. Is it me or were there no boobs at all this time around? Boooooo.
Also, whenever Torture Guy Who Used To Be On Misfits is on screen I do something else for a while just in case he does something gross again. I cannot handle that entire storyline.
I sound like somebody's dumb aunt.

Stannis* does want the throne and he is willing to do anything to get it as evidenced by vagina smoke demons. *Somewhat related, book readers, I may need to post a question in the spoiler thread.

I've been thinking about Joffrey's new widow, Formerly Anne Boleyn, and her kickass mom. Obviously they're super sharp ladies, and mom was all over the place during that wedding - fucking with Sansa's hair, talking to Tywin, just sortof generally mucking about in everything. But I don't know what their motivation might be. I mean, other than not being married to a lunatic, but that hasn't seemed to faze them so far. What happens to them now that Joffrey's dead? Nothing, right? They're just cast aside, unless Boleyn can manage to marry the Tommen kid too?
Kickass Mom is awesome, anyway. I want more of her.

My theory is that Olenna (awesome grandma) did it precisely to get them away from the Lannisters. They already have power and wealth (aren't they the second wealthiest family after the Lannisters, or something like that?) and she strikes me as the type who would be fed up with all this politics nonsense and not care one whit about their family being anywhere near the throne. She seems utterly disgusted by the Lannisters now that she's seen them up close, and doesn't want her family line mingling with theirs, so she made a command decision for the good of the house to off Joffrey, thereby nullifying the wedding.

Gah! Now I'm all self-conscious at the snickers I'm probably getting from those in the know. As I told scrawler on the episode thread, every prediction/theory I've had has been wrong.

It's okay pairesta, speculate away! It's a big whodunit storyline, purposefully set up to make you attempt to guess who did it. I'm sure all of us experts will do our snickering in private. I mean, we all had our fun trying to figure out who killed him back whenever we read this book. It's a great murder mystery because nearly everyone at the wedding wanted Joffrey dead. I love how the camera kept focusing on these individual shots of all these people who clearly hated him. And how the script really amped up his awfulness to 11 until not only the fans but most of the characters were obviously wishing he would just drop dead on the spot. And then it happens! It's a much happier occasion on the show because in the books Joffrey is still only 13. And seeing a 13 year old get murdered isn't quite as beautifully satisfying.

I am absolutely with you. The way she was acting at the wedding, it was written all over her face. Come on, that "cruel to kill a man at a wedding" crack? Telling Tywin that there will be many things to thank her for when the wedding's over? The look on her face at every terribly cruel thing Joffrey did? She totally killed him. Tyrion is just a guy in the cross hairs. If Olenna has any honor, she'll make sure Tyrion gets out some how.

It was still pretty satisfying in the book, mostly because it happens just a few chapters after the Red Wedding. A similar chronology in the series if we count episodes, but split up by seasons made the wait a bit longer.

Tywin makes as much sense as anyone, that seems valid. I had to look up "who the fuck is tommen", because I'd totally forgotten there was a little brother at all. I blame the TV series for that. Tommen hasn't been seen since season two (and they've recast him anyway for this season.) I understand juggling characters is hard, but all Tommen needed to do was sit around and remind people Joffrey has a younger brother.

Yeah, I would be surprised if she was behind it. We know her main goal is to be queen, and she seemed confident in her abilities to manipulate Joffrey.

pairesta I'm the same way. Every time I make a guess about anything, a few weeks later I look like the biggest asshole. Tea Rex right? When she made that comment about it being cruel to kill a man at a wedding, I was like wait, someone's not going to kill Joffrey, are they? No, that would be crazy. And yet, my foreshadowing sense is tingling like a motherfucker! Margaery did look shocked, but she also kept her distance. And she's already shown that she's a very good actress. (By not shrieking every time she looked at her shitty fiance.) But still. Margaery and...um, Olenna seem like manipulators to me. "He's a dick" would be good motivation for, say, MY mom, but I'm not seeing it here unless there's more to the plot than I know. Which there definitely is, because that's what serialized storytelling means. Whoever it was, Jester dude was totally in on it, right? WTF was that thing where he gave Sansa a necklace last episode, anyway? Was the necklace part of it? What if the plan is to pin it on Sansa, first spiriting her away so that at least she doesn't get killed for it?

To amend my theory: I don't think Margaery was in on it; Olenna concocted this idea herself, for Maraery's (and the Tyrell family's) own good.
I ran this by my wife last night and she agrees. She also suggested that jester dude is kidnapping sansa to take to the Tyrell stronghold.
