So no spoilers from the book, word? The other day this friend of Dastardess totally spoiled a major plot point from the books and I was so fucking mad and she totally didn't understand why I was upset. Bitch. Spoilers for Season 4 episode 1 though, those are cool. That first episode felt like one of those "moving the pieces around the board" episodes, didn't it? Like, not a shitload happened. That last scene was pretty great though. Anyways, and also did you guys see this article on AV Club? Sorry in advance if Scott Kaufman is a friend of yours, or you, but that is a fuckin' dumb article, Jesus Christ. Pedantic ass bullshit.

The first episode is always like that; it's cool. It did resolve some character statuses left unclear, like Brienne.
And yeah, that article was a waste.

Is it always like that? I guess I don't remember any other first episodes, which is an answer in itself.

It seems like as the cast expands, you spend half of the season either catching up on everyone or winding the season down and setting the pieces for next year. Last season had at least two tablesetting episodes to start things off before the action got going. I mean, think of all the people we didn't see this episode that we have to catch up on yet.
I was kind of hoping, since this was breaking a whole book up, that this season would be more of a jump right into the action, but I guess not.

Any TV series that has big climaxes at the end of a season need an episode or two to show where everyone goes from there. We do find out that Dany is moving on from the last slave city to a new one, having gotten a bit of a high from freeing Yunkai. We find out the Hound's backup plan for Arya and that Arya has become much darker. Jon is alive and at least Aemon is taking him at his word. The men practicing with arrows also shows that Sam's warning has had some effect. Jaime is back in the King's Guard and out of his father's graces while Brienne is not arrested but not fitting in either.

Off topic, but it really bugged me that Conley was using your av for his latest iteration, nowimnothing. For a bit there I thought you had developed terrible taste in movies. (Um, unless you are Conley, in which case WELCOME TO THE TI OL BUDDY)

(Um, unless you are Conley, in which case WELCOME TO THE TI OL BUDDY) Is that who that is? I guess that makes sense, I thought he was just some new guy who was wildly prolific. I called him out on it on one thread, but since he had not said anything wildly inappropriate I said I was cool with it. If it is Conley, I may just have to give up and change my avatar. It is just too confusing to keep seeing it pop up. Now if Nu-Disqus actually highlighted our own comments... But hey that is crazy talk right?

It was; he was banned again yesterday though, so you get your av back. He couldn't resist outing himself when people started bagging on Bay in that newswire about Roland Emmerich.

I don't mind the table setting episodes, but I always like talky stuff.
Are preview spoilers kosher? As in, discussing what was shown in the previews?

As in, discussing what was shown in the previews? very light preview spoiler I did not notice much spoiler-y in the previews, looks like the wedding is coming, but we knew it would be soon. We also get a glimpse of Bran and Stannis. Since they were not in the first episode, it looks like we will catch back up with where they are now.

I watch the previews so it's fine with me, but I didn't want to ruin it for anyone else, i.e. Invisible Goat. But psoiler tags work! Preview talk: I imagine this week won't be too table setty, due to the wedding likely taking up most of the episode. So probably just hearing from the characters we haven't heard from yet, like you mentioned. I'm a little worried about the wedding though, because Margaery is my main bitch and I'm afraid something bad will happen to her.

The only reason I don't avoid previews entirely is for the sake of some viewing companions. I also watch as few film trailers as possible once I'm interested in something.

I was worried when someone said it was in a fortnight that we would take four episodes to get there. The Battle of Blackwater Bay was imminent for half of season two, making it seem as though that whole season only covered two weeks of real time. Season one had people traveling the king's road, where it takes a month to get from King's Landing to the north.

Now you will have to studiously avoid reading the credits or watching the last-episode recap at the front of the episode.

Predictive: Watching the episode again, man Shae is so screwed. Bronn was pretty evasive about her "escape", only specifying that she was on the ship. Sad. I guess Tommen takes the throne now, so not much changes in terms of real power. Cersei is so constantly deplorable, except when she's pissing on Pycel.

Whodunnit speculation: Tywin, right? Get rid of that unstable psycho Joffrey. Reboot with Tommen. All the power players, i.e. Lannisters, stay in place. Get rid of those clever Tyrells, at least insofar as marrying into the throne. Marry Cersei to Ser Loras anyway, using the same threat of King's Guardship, maintaining alliance for the coming winter. Tyrion takes the fall, not the Martels? Gotta break a few eggs. EDIT: one more And Tywin gets Jaimie out of King's Guard service! They're not going to keep a guy who's seen three kings die, vows for life or no, and Tywin wants him back at the rock.

Latest ep spoilers I'm kinda sad, but wondering why someone hadn't tried to poison him sooner. Was hoping there would be something similar to all those Hitler assassination attempts, where he had so many gastrointestinal problems from so many poisonings a lot of them were probably canceling each other out.

Did anyone else feel like Joffrey's coughs were pretty weak? They sounded like coughs you make when clearing your throat.

Then again if I remember my old CPR classes, people cannot make any noise when they are choking. Yeah, when NO sound is coming out it's real bad. My mom, a nurse, pointed that out to me once when I struggled to tell her I was choking. Calmly sitting and barely paying attention, "If you can talk you're not chocking." Ah, mother's day is next month.

I didn't know they were going to pull this so early in the season and it dawned on me halfway through the episode that it would probably happen shortly. Took everything in my power not to spoil @ifwewait just with my obviously enthusiasm, but I was sitting on the very edge of the couch bouncing excitedly.

Took everything in my power not to spoil @ifwewait just with my obviously enthusiasm, but I was sitting on the very edge of the couch bouncing excitedly. My wife and I were both cheering, much to Erik Adams' probable disapproval. My wife: "Oh my god, is Joffrey really going to die? Die YOU FUCKER DIE!!!" I was clapping and fist pumping.
