The cannon should be a general hockey thing, because it is AWESOME. I am desperately jealous of it, and wish the Devils would get one. Of course, Lou Lamoriello would probably disapprove of it for being too fun, so it would never happen.

I would jump every time, too, even if I had season tickets. As for it being a general hockey thing, I pooh-poohed it for years because it was soooo "new hockey market" and I'm way too snobby for that kind of gimmick. Boy was I wrong! That cannon is the fucking bombdiggity. I think it should be a part of every sport! Let's replace the stupid singing of the national anthems before games with cannons for every home team point/goal/touchdown/etc.!

I'm jealous of you guys who can just go to a hockey game whenever you feel like it. You can't just go to a Leafs game like that...unless you're rich, you have to know someone with season tickets and hope they won't make you pay for them, or you have to buy shitty seats months in advance. It is awesome. On the other hand, easy ticket availability is what caused the team to go into bankruptcy and almost be sold back to Canada. However, this isn't really a hockey issue, despite what the previous owner thought. You can easily get tickets to any pro sports event in Phoenix. (Often super cheap on StubHub. I paid $18 for those tickets to Coyotes vs NJ Devils.) People here only show up if the team wins. So... make a trip to Phoenix the next time the Leafs are in town. It would be very easy to get tickets. Edited to add: Plus, the weather would likely be a lot nicer than Toronto in the winter!

By the way, I'm sure I've spammed the TMI board with this before, but why not do it again - I don't think I've mentioned it here specifically. If you like interesting hockey stats that are otherwise pointless, I have been compiling a list of scorers at every arena ever used for NHL games. It is currently at this poorly-named blog: goalspernhlarena.blogspot.caSo if you want to see who has scored the most goals at Jobing Arena or PNC Arena, there you go! Sometimes, especially for the really old original arenas, the lists are complete. (Maintaining complete lists for the current arenas takes way more work than I have time for...)

I can't believe a Devil is the highest scorer at the Meadowlands! I was figuring it would be Mario. Zing! Sigh.

Come see the Leafs in Buffalo! It's not a bad drive, almost all of the season ticket holders I know sell a bunch of their tickets on StubHub to help defray their costs, and they're all complaining that the market is really soft this season, I'm assuming because the non-Ryan Miller Sabres are bad at hockey and not in a fun way. Although I have to admit, the Sabres are losing in a slightly more entertaining fashion lately. I think they're excited about having FINALLY killed off both the coach and the GM. I'm hoping it's just a dead cat bounce and not the team deciding it might be fun to win enough to fall out of the lottery though because I will personally kill them all if that happens.

Canes are on a four-game win streak, and even though I still have serious doubts about their ability to make the playoffs, they're certainly making it an exciting time to hope I'm wrong. Eric Staal (8 points in the last 5 games) and Alex Semin (7 points in the last five games) have been incredible, and even Jiri Tlusty has been making some sigificant contributions to the recently reconstituted first forward line that was so dominant last season. We're finally scoring goals, including this goal by Nathan Gerbe, which I would argue is even more impressive than Hertl's similar goal for the Sharks earlier this season by virtue of the fact that this one came at a time when it mattered.
But the greatest moment of this win streak came tonight when the Canes, down 2-0 in a critical game against the Blue Jackets, scored three goals in less than two minutes in the third period to take the lead, win, and vault over Columbus for third place in the Metro division. Will they keep this recent playoff-team-caliber play up? I don't know, and I certainly have my doubts. It wouldn't surprise me if they came second in the division with 98 points. It wouldn't surprise if they opened up a 12-game losing streak tomorrow when they face the Habs, and finished with another top five draft pick as consolation prize. But for now, it's a fun time to be a Canes fan in the thick of the playoff race, and I'll enjoy the good times for however long they last.

I'm assuming any good or bad momentum is going to be disrupted by the Olympic Break, so I'm giving the Devils a pass until the end of February. That includes that game from this weekend which we shall all never speak of again. (Boy, am I glad I scheduled to meet up with friends I hadn't seen in months before realizing that was the date for the stupid fucking outdoor game.)

I don't want to completely derail this thread into Rangers/Devils trash talking, but there are so many videos I'd love to dig up (the Avery rule comes to mind). I'll just link to this one because in my extremely biased opinion it is the greatest sports call in the history of sports broadcasting. Howie Rose ruled.

Ha! I don't want to completely derail this thread into Rangers/Devils trash talking Aw, but it's the best kind of trash talking! Because for every Avery Rule, there's a Jagr throwing out his shoulder trying to punch Scott Gomez and missing! I will agree on the Howie Rose front. Back in the day, our respective teams had the best announcers. We've gone from national games called by In-His-Prime Doc and JD to Rambling-Old-Man Doc and Pierre "Seriously, if he opens his mouth to talk one more time, I'm renouncing hockey forever" Maguire. ::sobs:: A few years ago, NHL Network replayed the '96 World Cup final and hearing Doc and JD calling a game where they actually did honest-to-gosh useful play-by-play and insightful analysis was like seeing a unicorn.

It is so hard to find good hockey announcers. The more I travelled and watched games in other cities the more I realized that I wasn't alone. There are bad announcers everwhere.
Tonight I'd like to thank the scheduling gods for letting the Coyotes play a Kings team which can't score who have played 3 games in 4 days. That was a gift! Thankfully, the Coyotes didn't blow that opportunity. If they had, I would have been really mad.
2 goal game for Oliver Ekman-Larsson! I've said it before, but I'm saying it again: Can't wait to see OEL play in the Olympics!
Buffalo comes in Thursday. Hoping the team doesn't play down to the Sabres. This is a genuine problem with the Coyotes. They need points BADLY. Can't be losing this much in the Pacific Division.

Yeah, he'll have a solid game here or there, but I'd put Uncle Daddy on the bench from here on out. And I'm not even biased. Exactly. And, from a fantasy perspective, I doubt he's even going to get that many starts. Even if Schneider stumbles a bit, the Devils need the points too badly to have someone starting regularly with Marty's numbers. (Aside: his talk of wanting to get traded somewhere he'd get more starts is breaking my heart. Dude, Marty -- please. Finish your career in a Devils sweater. Don't do this.) (Also, who would even want Marty at this point?)

So after a 3-0 shutout loss at the hands of the Habs (which I'm inclined to chalk up to playing their fifth game in seven days against a rested Montreal, and running into Carey Price at a bad time), the Canes beat the Blues 3-1 last night! That was exciting, especially since the Blues were 17-3-1 against the East heading into this game. And the Canes finish the month of January at 10-4, which was pretty critical, because they're still barely in the playoffs, and will probably fall out of the playoffs again between now and their next game on Tuesday. But things are looking up at the moment for the Canes. I'm still not convinced that this is a playoff team, but I think we've got as good a chance as anyone else fighting for that third spot in the Metro or second Eastern Wild Card. Hopefully they can carry their momentum into and beyond the Olympic Break. And speaking of the Olympic Break, anyone have any thoughts on Parise being named the US captain? He doesn't exactly seem like the obvious choice, but then again I'm not terribly familiar with him. Do you have any input, Liz n Dicksgiving or Hugs and Hisses? Or is anyone here a Wild fan (I can't think of anyone in our community who's a Wild fan off the top of my head), with some input on what Parise has been as a leader in Minnesota?

I like Parise as a player a lot. But, I don't know much about him as a leader. I've a friend who is a big Devils fan, so maybe I'll ask him.
Meanwhile, the Coyotes continue a frustrating and baffling season. After losing to Buffalo (AGAIN!) Captain Shane Doan basically had a meltdown and called out the team for their mediocrity, apparently naming names.
So, tonight's game was vs Pittsburgh. Which I gave up tickets to because I was so embarrassed by the crappy play vs the Sabres. If you stink that much vs Buffalo, what's going to happen when the Pens come to town?
Obviously, the Coyotes are going to win 3-1. WTF? Yeah, that's absolutely what I expected to happen. For sure! Ugh, I don't understand why the Coyotes can't play like this every game? It was like a totally different team was out there tonight. Mike Smith finally had a great game. Defense was outstanding. Stick handling was MUCH better. Like... just their basic positioning on the ice was much better. And now they're 1 point out of playoff position. ONE POINT. And they took a loss to Buffalo on Thursday. Sigh. That was just inexcusable.
Tippett put Oliver Ekman-Larsson out there vs. Crosby and even Malkin sometimes. OEL was all over them. Way to go, Ollie! He was phenomenal in this game! Clocked over 27 minutes. OMG, I freaking LOVE this kid. His stick handling in this game was amazing! Have I mentioned that I am excited to see him play in the Olympics? (Sorry.)
Edited to add: Oh, and then in the postgame a female reporter from Pittsburgh asked Crosby about his thoughts on the Phoenix defense, mentioning Z Michalek and "uh...that guy with three names". Really? You don't even learn the names of the opposing team's best players? He's going to the Olympics! He's one of the top D-men in the league! "That guy with three names"?? I mean, I know we don't play each other that often, but I know the names of the players on your team.

Is he back yet, and does he still have a starting job? "Is he back yet?" Yes, he just returned this weekend. He had been on IR for several weeks after his return a while ago, and then he was put on a conditioning stint with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL, where he posted a .937 save % over the course of two games. I don't know what happens next. I'm not sure if Justin Peters can be grabbed off of waivers. If he can be, then any team who needs a backup would be foolish not to take him, and if that's the case, then I expect the team to deal him for whatever they can get. Although for the first time since '06, really the concept of trading Ward himself is no longer very far-fetched, and it's conceivable that he could be dealt as well. I would want Jim Rutherford to wait until at least the trading deadline to trade Ward, though, as the sample size of games with Khudobin (he only has 38 career NHL starts) is too small to be very sure that his strong play is sustainable in the long term. "Does he still have a starting job?" I don't believe the Carolina organization has made that clear yet. My guess is this: Khudobin gets the start tomorrow against Winnepeg and barring a poor performance from Mr. Win-or-Die, Ward will only start one of four games between now and the Olympic break. After the break, I would imagine that if Ward impresses in his NHL return, he could be worked in more and more until the Canes have a goaltending tandem. If Ward doesn't play well, I think he'll finish the season a true backup and Khudobin will get the majority of the starts. I don't think Cam is the clear-cut number one at any point this season unless Khudobin begins to legitimately disappoint. Ward has been wildly inconsistent for several years now, and despite going 10-4 this month, the Canes are currently sitting at 10th in the East, so this team can't really afford to start Ward like he's a number one if he's not on top of his game. Of course, it goes without saying that these scenarios are contingent upon Ward and Khudobin staying healthy.

As much as it pains me to say this, Parise is a great leader, and Team USA would be stupid not to name him captain. Remember that "Young Stars" exhibition game they used to do (still do?) before the All-Star game? When Parise played in it he had the puck on his stick and a clear shot at a breakaway. It was an all-star exhibition game and the guy still chipped it off the glass so his team could change responsibly. ::shakes head in wonder:: That kid was a born Devil. Such a shame he didn't fulfill his destiny. Anyway, he's got a good hockey head on his shoulders, he's been a great ambassador for USA hockey for a long time, and he's a humble, team player. I have absolutely no sense of how he's played since he got to MN, but in theory, he's got all the tools. I didn't watch any of the last Olympic hockey games, but wasn't he one of the best players in that tournament?

I think the NHL should consider shortening games to 58 minutes. Because if the third periods were all two minutes shorter, the Devils might actually manage to win some games lately. That said, last night I was prescient. The Devils took a first-period 1-0 lead against the Avs, and I proclaimed they'd hold it decisively until the final minute, then lose in OT. Hugs and Hisses and our mother probably would have been more impressed with my mad sports-analysis skills if A) it wasn't obvious that that's the Devils' M.O. lately, and both of them would have predicted the same out loud if I hadn't gotten to it first, and B) they'd actually blown the lead in the final minute, rather than in the final two minutes. Come on, guys! Couldn't hold on for 50 more seconds to make me look smarter?
