Today, the Coyotes ownership is saying former GM John Chayka quit. He's saying the whole thing is ownership's fault. And the Coyotes issued the following public statement:
Um.... really guys? I consider this to be petty and unprofessional. This is really what you want to be putting out to the public on company letterhead?
Local reporters are saying "sources" are emailing them calling Chayka a liar. Like, wtf is going on? Why are you leaking your internal spats to the public?
Even if Chayka stood in a meeting and said, "fuck all you ignorant morons, I'm going where the money is!" it is an extremely bad look to be throwing a temper tantrum in your public statements and issuing personal insults as leaks to the press.
Honestly, what the hell is going on with these new owners?
Amusingly, when I expressed similar thoughts on Twitter a random dude replied purely to insult me, and then tell me I deserved the insult "because I didn't do my homework" about the "reason behind the resentment".
I bet this same dude says women shouldn't be in leadership positions because they are "too emotional".
Never change, Sports Twitter.

That is fucking wild. I cannot think of a single press release from a team regarding a GM or coach (or even a player) leaving the organization that didn't go with a boilerplate "We wish so-and-so the best in their future endeavors". Like, from my perspective, Chayka seemed like the less successful end of the new trend of hiring young GMs to do analytics-heavy GMing, but like, there've been a bunch of objectively bad GMs who haven't received this level of public ire from their teams. What are your thoughts on the Coyotes chances heading into the playoffs? Nashville's had a really disappointing season given how good they should be, so I feel like they stand a pretty decent chance in the first round?

Yeah, I don't get it... based on what's come out the new ownership is angry that he was investigating a new job even though they granted permission for him to interview for said new job?
Arizona just can't ever be a stable team can they.

Ok, the rumours about the Coyotes apparently being interested in Chiarelli while ostensibly still trying to sign Taylor Hall are extra hilarious.

The Coyotes are an utterly hilarious team to follow right now. I have no idea what the hell they are doing or why. Still laughing over that dude on Twitter chiding me for "not doing my homework", as if reading the news about this team makes any of this remotely explicable. LOL
A friend and I were talking about the speculation over which team Chayka had interviewed with. Both of us are hoping it was New Jersey, purely for the hilarity factor of that. Ye gods, I would laugh.
LOL, no! I still have no idea what the hell happened here. That statement they released is WILD. As if Chayka slept with their wives and killed their puppies, or something. But all the press is saying it is merely him interviewing for some other job. Which may or may not even be related to hockey?! And they may or may not have given him permission to do? Like, wtf?? The rumor is that it being a non-hockey job is what really made them mad, which I can't even comprehend. How is any of this out of the ordinary with any pro sports team?
If they are so upset he was talking to other organizations, why are they throwing a tantrum over him quitting?
It is definitely WILD. I still can't believe a professional organization released that. Don't they employ professional PR people?
I mean, Chayka didn't seem like an awful GM to me. He wasn't great, but not terrible. Drafts were not great, but not total failures. Had some hit or miss contracts. Team improved every year. He addressed deficiencies. Like, he was... fine? And honestly, merely fine is welcome for the Coyotes as of late. I wasn't upset when they gave him a contract extension last winter.
Shrug. I don't know. This is crazy.
The not-first-round first round? Ah, NHL. It's not the playoffs, it's a play-in. But not a play-in game, a play-in series. So....it's another round to the playoffs? No. .... Okay?
This is a good question. The break was probably good for the Coyotes, who had been very injury plagued. Most of the top players are ready to go, which will definitely help. Coyotes and Preds were 1-1 during the regular season, but that was, like, 7 months ago. I'd say the Coyotes had decent odds, however, I have no idea what is going on psychologically with them now. Gotta be weird. If ownership is letting much spew out to the press, you have to think the players are hearing even more of this craziness. Who knows?
Nashville SHOULD have been better, so I don't count them out. They have strong players. They SHOULD win.
At this point, I am expecting the Coyotes to lose. That seems like a fitting end. But I wouldn't be surprised if they won.

Ok! Coyotes win Game 1 vs Nashville. Woo! Coyotes had to shuffle their lineup due to Schmaltz being out after the terrible head shot by Vegas in the warmup game. The lineup shuffling really helped! Coyotes looked much better in the 1st period. I think Kessel played a lot better with the new line.
However, the Coyotes really lost control in the 3rd period. They started to play wild and sloppy. They could not fight back against the attack Nashville was doing. Would like to see a tighter game next time.
Kuemper looked good!
In other NHL news, I am sooooo glad to not be a St Louis Blues fan. OMG, Colorado scoring the game winner with 0.1 second left is crushing.

Canes sweep the Rangers and are on to the playoffs proper! To be honest, New York didn't look that great. I think Panarin had like two points, but when he was such a big part of why they were even competing for a playoff spot in the first place, they probably needed him to be better to have much of a chance. Going 1 of 14 on the powerplay also didn't help matters. Meanwhile the Canes' top line on offense was fantastic; apart from being a key part of the penalty kill (where he was seemingly constantly taking away the puck from Rangers sitting just inside the blue line), Aho had 8 points, and Svechnikov had a hat trick in game 2. Defense was also generally pretty great, Mrazek was very good, and Reimer was fantastic after being given a start in Game 3. It's been a long time since the Canes were the favorites in a playoff(ish) series; it was fun to see them not just beat a team they were expected to beat, but also kind of dominate a series.

I'm still bummed that my two teams are playing each other in the play-in. But I guess the side benefit is one of them getting a shot at Lafreniere anyway.

I wasn't able to watch Game 2 of Preds-Coyotes, but I did see Game 3. (The games are on so early!!!) Nashville looked sloppy in this game. I don't understand why. They played great in the 3rd period of Game 1. And the recaps of Game 2 make it sound like they were good there, too. The 2nd goal the Coyotes scored in this game was such sloppy work by the Nashville defense. Like, rookie error, caught puck watching. When I saw this develop, I said out loud (to no one), "What are they doing?" Three Preds players along the left side boards, surrounding one Coyotes player, utterly zero Preds players from the middle of the ice to the right side boards. Garland is therefore open in the middle of the ice. Steppan passes him the puck, a Pred tries to skate over, Garland just waits for him to pass by, and shoots. Wow, Preds. Wow. I'll take it! Coyotes up 2-1.

As a Flames fan I'd love to see the oilers go home (from their own arena lol) early but jeez we all know that's gonna be the prelude to them winning first overall again right?

So, the 12 seeds in both conferences are up on the 5 seeds. And the 11 seed in the Western Conference is up on the 6 seed. Hmmm...
Oh, and I'm rooting for the Flames in that matchup. Good luck!

Well I'll happily cheer for the hometown team if the Flames end up losing but yeah. It also feels really weird to be cheering for the Habs in any way but it would be very funny to see them knock out the Pens.

Jfc these OTs in the Jackets game. I'll have to go to bed before it's done.

Wow, the Coyotes actually won a game versus Colorado today. Shocking! I was sure they'd be swept. Really glad the Hawks won their play-in series so that the Coyotes could avoid having to play Vegas in this round.
Great job, Darcy Kuemper! Stopped 49/51 shots. Wow.

The Sabres were short handed enough to finally call up my cousin and he scored in his debut, so I’m pro-COVID now.

Dunno what’s the deal with YouTube’s extended highlights videos for NHL games this season, but they are absolutely awful. It’ll be like 6-7 minutes of first period highlights in a 9 minute video, and then the absolutely necessary highlights from the second two periods. Either they’ve cut it down to just having one or two people compiling these highlights every night and they’re basically forced by time constraints to put in anything that’s technically a highlight into these videos (sometimes including stuff like 20 seconds of players battling for the puck in the neutral zone, or else they’re having the videos compiled by AI and the parameters for how to put together a video are leading to these highlight packages jam packed with all kinds of uninteresting low-danger shot attempts in the first period.
