I saw someone in the comments on a Deadspin hockey article who likes Doc Emrick, which blows my mind. It's like being a fan of having kidney stones. People were praising Bob Cole on Twitter the other day (which is alright because Bob Cole is awesome, even if he is 100 years old and has no idea what's going on. But one of the people was a Nazi, and not the kind of Nazi where you have to figure it out by reading their tweets, the kind where they had a swastika in their profile. Bob Cole: so good, even the worst people know he's good.

The Coyotes just played an excruciating game against Nashville. They won 2-1, but, like half of Nashville is injured, and Nashville was in their offensive zone approximately 90% of the game. The Coyotes goalie had to made 44 saves. It was painful.
And one of the Coyotes goals was shorthanded.
Actually, that part isn't all that weird. The Coyotes have scored 10 shorthanded goals this year. Which made an amusing statistic side by side with the one about how Nashville has only scored 8 power play goals.
But still..... yeesh. It wasn't quite as bad as that Coyotes/Blackhawks playoff game 7 or 8 years ago, where the Hawks had something like 60 SOG. But, this was pretty close.
Bizarrely, the only thing that helped the Coyotes was that Rinne suddenly looked out of it. Tired maybe. The shorthanded goal was a WTF goal on Rinne, coming almost from the blue line. The other goal was also one I expected Rinne to get. There was another shot where Rinne was so shaken that he didn't even know where the puck was, and actually turned around to check to see if it had gone in. if the Coyotes had been able to mount any offensive pressure at all, Rinne looked terrible down low. They probably could have beat him there several more times.
Very strange game.

My fantasy opponent this week has Laine on his team, and he's scored more goals than my entire team. 5 goals in one game is crazy. Getting two hat tricks in a week is also crazy. He's scored a lot this month.... just looked it up, 16 goals this month. yeesh.
Yeah, that is really unfortunate for your fantasy team. Sorry.

As of my posting this comment, Arizona is the second wild card team in the Western Conference. They are on pace to have 87 points at the end of the season. Columbus is not currently a playoff team. They are on pace for a 96 point season. As evidenced by the fact that not only did they not trade Panarin or Bobrovsky at the deadline, but traded a bunch of prospects and picks for Duchene and Dzingel, Columbus is clearly making a bid to win the Cup this season. How hilarious would it be if they actually did miss the playoffs with 96 points, while the Coyotes make the playoffs with nine fewer points?

Kevin Hayes currently has more points than any other trade deadline pickup, despite the Jets only really mustering a fuck against good teams, give or take the odd blowout.

Toronto media has started calling John Tavares "Johnny Toronto" which seems a bit presumptuous.

Canes back in the playoffs for the first time since 2009! Wish the Pens would've lost in regulation tonight so that Carolina would be playing the Islanders instead of the Caps, but it's still been a really great season, and Washington has frequently struggled early in the playoffs, so who knows what'll happen?
Also, what a disappointing reward for Tampa, probably the best team of the 21st Century thus far, to be playing Columbus in the first round, a team which underperformed to end up being the second wild card in the first place, and is clearly going all-out to win the Cup this season. I think Tampa's going to win, but when you look at how comparatively weak the west is, and when you consider that Columbus honestly has a better roster than Carolina or the Islanders even in the East, it kind of sucks to be matched up against them in the first round.

Coyotes defense this year is great. Maybe better than last year. If they can have even average goal scoring they might make the playoffs. Just average goal scoring, Coyotes, please?
Edit: Also, how is Darcy Kuemper a good goalie? I don't even understand goalie development or scouting or performance. How does anyone predict this? Seemingly every year we see one or two goalies who come from seeming nowhere to have good seasons.
That said, I know at least part of what is helping Kuemper is the great Defense in front of him. But still. He has a .942 Save %. I don't understand this.
Coyotes are 2nd Best in Goals Allowed
8th in Goal Differential But 22nd in Goal Scoring
What is sad is that this is an improvement on last season.

Kings are bad, but they seem better than last year at least. The offense can actually score, now if only the defense tightened up just a little bit. After last year, 5 wins at this point really does seem like overachieving. I like Todd McLellan as coach, done a decent job with what he has to work with. The Kings will be rebuilding for at least two to three more years and that is when contracts will finally start to come off the books. Doughty and Kopitar will likely be the only ones left from the cup years, Doughty will be only around 33 and should still have a few good years left. Hoping Kopitar can find a way to have some Datsyuk like longevity by then.

Yo, fuck Todd McLellan. The kings should fire his ass immediately and sign Mike Babcock.
Not really, I don't think he is a bad coach at all. However.... Mike Babcock.

Former Hurricanes defenseman Michal Jordan is accusing former Hurricanes/current Flames head coach Bill Peters of kicking him and punching another player in the head, on the heels of a black former AHL prospect accusing Peters of repeatedly using the n-word in front of him back when Peters coached the Rockford Ice Hogs. I know this is probably still dwarfed by the fact that hockey is a sport with a criminal disregard for players' long term health given how easy it is to get concussed, but this is still disgusting and Peters needs to be fired from Calgary. I've also read vague reports that leaders in the Canes locker room at the time of the Jordan incident took their concerns to then GM Ron Francis, and he did nothing, so if true he needs to be let go as the GM of the new Seattle team as well. Current Canes coach Rod Brind'Amour was also an assistant coach with the team at the time Peters was physically abusing players. It's totally unbelievable that, even if he didn't witness anything himself, that he wouldn't have heard about it, so I'm not really sure what, barring vigorously insisting to team management that Peters be fired, he would have had to do to the point that he shouldn't be considered complicit in Peters' actions and fired as well.

Re: Brind'amour: several of the reports I saw said that some of the multiple people that tried to take it to Francis were people with longstanding relationships with him and that his inaction had damaged those relationships permanently. That screamed Brind'Amour to me. As a flames fan I think it's ridiculous it took them so long to fire him/demand his resignation, the moment the corroboration from other people in the Rockford dressing room came out he should have been permanently out the door. I think Treliving is a pretty standup guy so it's almost certainly the Flames' tightwad oil baron ownership stalling to figure out what method to get rid of him while paying him as little as possible

Lots of stories about Babcock doing just pointlessly cruel things that make him seem like a massive, massive asshole, even if they aren't necessarily physically abusing players or using slurs. Like the time when he forced Mitch Marner to compile a list ranking how hard he believed each of his teammates worked and then showed the list to the rest of the team.

Ridiculous that we’re on pace to have a team who with 99 points miss the playoffs in the East, while a team with 89 points makes the playoffs in the West. Also that 99 points is on pace to win the Pacific division. Weird that there isn’t more discussion of how the East has been on the whole a much stronger conference for several years now, nor how the Metro has been by far the best division.

The Arizona Coyotes have apparently fired their GM John Chayka. No one is commenting about this. He just signed a contract extension last fall. Local reporters have asked about this several times, only one time getting a response of "no comment".
I'm not all sure what is going on with Coyotes management since the shutdown. We've seen a major recruiting violation, we don't even know what is happening with Taylor Hall. We don't really know anything about the new owners.
This is all very strange.
