Yeah, this one's already on the AV Club TI, and it's only been on TI for a few weeks, but it tends to spark enough conversation that as long as this forum remains heavily trafficked I'll probably post this both here and in the AV Club TI itself.
So yeah, if anyone wants to talk hockey, then hockey-talk away.

::crickets chirping::
This is kind of reminding me of all those Canes/Devils late-season matinees I used to go to in the late '90s when I still had Devils season tickets.

Ha, yeah, I feel like the Hockey Thread mostly gets the same few users posting every week, and I feel like most people have already said what they want to say on the AV Club itself, if they even have an account here yet. Also, the one Canes-Devils game I have attended in person was, I believe, the one game from the Canes 2005-2006 Cup-winning season that I attended in person. But yeah, the Canes at least tended to suck back in the late 90s. I imagine the Devils must have been better if only because Martin Brodeur >>> Trevor Kidd.

I'll play.
It bothers me that half the Rangers top 6 and their starting goalie are all injured right now. This is not a good way to start the season competitively!

Wait, so I'm assuming your starter while Lundqvist is out is Biron, then? As in the same Biron that previously had a save % of 0.762? That Biron? This is why having a dependable backup goalie is a good thing.

Oh god, those were bleak years for the Devils, because it was the deadest of the dead-puck years. Hard trapping, no offensive talent (it was during that time that Bill Guerin, after scoring his 29th goal some time in mid-March, said "If I don't get 30 I'm stupid." Funny story...), a stated team policy of "no personality allowed", and year after year the team went into the playoffs with the 1-seed in the East and lost in the first round. But! Those were the years I had season tickets in the fourth row in one of the offensive-zone-two-periods corners, so as dull as all those games were, they were hockey games I saw in person. And hockey games you see in person are better than pretty much anything else, so those are sort of the glory years to me. Anyway, for some reason it seemed that we only ever played the Canes on Saturday matinees, and those games were always BRUTAL. Actually, that goes back to the Whaler years, too, now that I think about it. I think, on average, the Canes always won those games by about six goals. Anyway, I have to thank you for breaking the hockey ice (HA!) in the TI. I used to have a lively hockey community to talk with when I was blogging, but that's fallen by the wayside. It's nice to have at least a small measure of that back.

Yes, our backup is Cam Talbot now, who has not played in an NHL game to my knowledge.
But he's starting tomorrow!

Somehow I grew up in Minnesota and never got into hockey. However, now that the Wild's minor league team is playing in Des Moines, I'm thinking about hitting up some of those games this year.

You guys beat the Canes 3-1 last night. Also, ugh, Cam Ward is out 3-4 weeks, and Anton Khudobin isn't back yet either, so once again we have to turn to Justin "let-in-two-goals-on-the-first-two-shots-he-faces-all-season" Peters to be our starter. This team seriously can not catch a fucking break with goalie injuries. To be fair, I feel like there have been a shitton of goalie injuries this season, and apparently Josh Harding got hurt for the Wild last night, so on top of the Backstrom injury, they're down to their third-stringer too.

Big trade between Sabres and Islanders. Vanek to Islanders for Moulson, a 2014 1st rounder and a 2015 2nd rounder. Some day all of these prospects for the Sabres should turn a very shitty team into a very good one, but for now it's pretty clear that the Sabres have no hopes of competing for the playoffs.

I was thinking the Rangers would be making a play for Vanek, all I can hope for now is he doesn't re-sign with the Isles after this year.

Yeah, the Islanders could end up losing out big time on this trade if they can't re-sign Vanek. At least the Sabres have got the draft picks, and could probably pawn Moulson off for even more picks at the trade deadline if he's not working out and doesn't look to be a likely re-sign. Also, speaking of the Rangers, looks like Lundqvist will be back in net tomorrow night, so that should be good news for you guys.

Teemu Selanne is out two weeks? That blows. I have a friend up in Buffalo who just emailed that she bought tickets to see the Ducks come into town, just so she could see Selanne. Now she's pissed that she's going to be stuck just watching "the stinky ol' Sabres". Poor, poor Sabres fans this year.

Yes, I'm the rare woman who likes hockey! Really glad the Phoenix Coyotes finally have their mess of an ownership situation cleaned up. It was kind of weird over the last few years having the Coyotes be the most successful major sports team in town, even though they had no owner, and no one was sure they'd even stay in town.
Anyway, new year! The team is off to a solid start. Of course, the already tough Pacific Division got even tougher with realignment. I'm already hating this new division. LA vs SJ tonight was the worst possible outcome, Kings win in OT, so both teams get points. Ugh. So, now 5 teams in the Pacific Division are at 18+ points.
Don't have plans for Halloween, so I may go to the game vs. Nashville tomorrow.

But I have no idea what the story is here. Thanks for the heads-up. I have to say, "kidnapping charges" sounds a lot more sensational than "domestic violence charges"; I had immediate visions of Varlamov, like, bundling corrupt, rich businessmen into the trunk of his car in complicated ransom schemes.

Well, if anyone is interested, the latest rumor I read is that Steve Downie was banging Varlamov's wife all season, and I guess he found out... which would explain why Downie was just traded to Philly for Max Talbot.
