Thanks for the heads-up. I have to say, "kidnapping charges" sounds a lot more sensational than "domestic violence charges"; I had immediate visions of Varlamov, like, bundling corrupt, rich businessmen into the trunk of his car in complicated ransom schemes. Well, if anyone is interested, the latest rumor I read is that Steve Downie was banging Varlamov's wife all season, and I guess he found out... which would explain why Downie was just traded to Philly for Max Talbot. Wow, seriously? Oh, and liz, I think the kidnapping charges are in the article title because they're by far the more serious charge

It's always good to see fellow female hockey fans! Especially ones of maligned, unpopular teams. ::fist bump:: Woo! I don't have a single female friend who likes hockey. Not even when I lived in Los Angeles or Seattle. Alas. It was so exciting when Phoenix got a pro NHL team. (Sorry, Winnipeg. Hope you're okay now.) They have now turned into a great team. GM Don Maloney and HC Dave Tippett did an amazing job with them during the ownership fiasco. If those two left, I suspect the team would collapse. Of course, if attendance doesn't increase, they'll probably be moved to Seattle in 5 years.

I hadn't heard that one. Well, maybe that finally makes that trade make some sort of sense. Or, are people just making this up because they're baffled by the trade and want an excuse for it to make sense? Surprised the Avs let Varlamov play tonight. The list of charges is kind of nasty sounding. I don't know if I react differently to this because I am a woman. But.... At very least, it seems like bad PR.

There were similar rumors out of Philly a few years ago when they traded Carter, supposedly he was getting it on with Hartnell's wife. Anyway, how did all your teams do this weekend? The Rangers have themselves a little three game win streak going for themselves, but I have a feeling it won't last against the Ducks tonight.

The best part about the ones out of Philly a couple of years ago was that there always seems to be that kind of story swirling around them when there's tension in the dressing room; way back in the day the story was that Eric Lindros was banging Mrs. Rod Brind'Amour. I just love how this helps to burnish the "irreparably dysfunctional" vibe that Ed Snider's team always seems to have. (It's a good thing I have that to make me happy, since goodness knows my Devils are doing nothing on the happiness front.) And, speaking of the Devils, this weekend was spectacularly shitty. They're pretty much unwatchably bad now. We suffered through the entirety of the 1-0 loss at home to the woebegone Flyers, but had the good sense to turn off the 3-0 debacle in Minnesota midway through the second. I'm looking forward to some non-Devils hockey tonight, specifically your Rangers/Ducks game. Although I fear you and I are on opposite ends of that one...

I would've scratched Pyatt, but I guess he's the bigger body.

There have been some troubling rumors about him having severe Post Concussion Syndrome, which is why no one is saying anything. Not good!
I think the Rangers will win tonight. Happy to have my favorite guy back on the ice, go Captain Cally!

So what you're saying is, marital infidelities may have played a substantial role in the Canes acquiring their greatest captain? And speaking of the Canes, we are currently on a 5-game losing streak. We have scored five goals during this time. It's 2nd intermission vs Philly right now, and it's scoreless. I'm just going to go ahead and predict Philly will score one goal in a shootout, handing the Canes a 1-0 loss.

Seriously, I was wondering what the hell was up with teams like Edmonton and Calgary going with such unproven goalies this season. Hopefully Bryz can turn his career around. It's got to suck playing in net with a defense like the Flyers' in front of you.

Well, as a Phoenix Coyotes fan I can attest that Bryz was a good goalie when he has a good defense in front of him. Well, maybe. There's always the possibility that goaltending coach Sean Burke is the primary reason Bryz and Mike Smith have only been good when they've been with the Coyotes.
I went to the Coyotes vs Capitals game last night. Coyotes played like utter crap for the first 2 periods. Some of their worst play of the season. They took a unholy amount of penalties. The second period was bizarre and featured about 10 minutes of 5-on-5. There were some crazy penalties taken in this game. I saw the Caps take a "too many men" penalty *while on the penalty kill*! The 5-3 was wiped out when Mike Smith attempted to help the attack during the delayed call. He skated towards the bench, the puck came to him and he passed it to a teammate.... and was called for "delay of game". Because he was over the red line. Which is a penalty. Who knew? (Mike Smith didn't.) A Caps player shot the puck over the glass with 2 mins remaining in regulation, putting the Coyotes on power play when they were down 3-2. They scored 15 seconds later. Then a Coyotes player covered up the puck as the clock hit 20:00. Officials called it penalty, saying time hadn't expired. So, the Coyotes had to start OT on penalty kill. There were 17 total penalties in the game.
Coyotes scored 2 goals in the final 4 minutes to force OT. Then won in the shootout when Ovechkin couldn't score. Easily one of the weirdest games I've ever been to.
Coyotes have a brutal schedule ahead. This week they play Chicago and St. Louis on the road, and Tampa Bay at home. I am praying they don't go 0-3.

Don't look now, but the Devils suddenly don't suck either! The mighty Metropolitan Division can quake at the sight of our teams, Roy Batty's Pet Dove. Or, um, something. Anyway, the Devils might have gone out and found a serviceable starter for the post-Brodeur Era, but Brodeur clearly believes that there is no such thing as a post-Brodeur Era. Someday we really will be watching his moldering corpse refusing to give way to younger goalie.

As an Avs fan, that one kind of surprised me, but of course, the only Canes game I've seen this season was the first time they played Colorado. I wasn't shocked. The team has played well as of late, a significant percentage of their recent struggles (though by no means a majority, this team still has plenty of problems which could hold them back from being a playoff team), dating back to last season can be attributed to an obscene number of injuries, and as Peters is playing some of the best hockey of his life right now, I figured we had at least a decent chance against a team that's been accruing points at an unsustainable level thus far this season. Plus, in a league with an 82-game season, I don't think any single team winning a game 2-1 can be considered shocking. It's not like the NFL where a team like Jacksonville beating the Broncos would be truly shocking, and the Canes are a much better hockey team than the Jags are a football team. All that being said, the Canes are still not in playoff position, and their recent stretch of good play (7 points in 8 games) has mostly served to undue the damage they did to themselves during the 5 game losing streak that immediately preceded. And we've only scored 7 goals in our last 4 games; sure, our defense has only given up 4 goals in that time, which is fantastic, but at some point if they want to maintain their recent success this team is going to have to start doing what it was built to do and start scoring some more goals. And on the Avs front, is there any news on the Varlamov situation? And I see MacKinnon had his ninth assist of the season last night: looks like he's having a pretty solid rookie campaign.

The last I heard about Varlamov is that he hired a new attorney and that the DA was still deciding if they wanted to press charges, and if so, for what. Since those first few days, it hasn't really been that big of a topic of discussion here in Denver. I didn't think it was shocking, but so far this season the Avs have had two streaks of six wins, followed each time by one loss, so I was just assuming/hoping that would continue. They're only 17 games in, but Roy already has to be an early favorite for coach of the year. MacKinnon is taking more shots and it's only a matter of time before his goals start increasing. Right now he's at 2.

That injury to Stamkos looked pretty bad, eh? I cringed when I saw it. That really stinks. I hate seeing good players get injured on freak plays like that.
So far 2013 has featured Bizarro Phoenix Coyotes. Shockingly, they can actually score this season. It is so strange and wonderful. Also strange is that they can't seem to stop other teams from scoring. So, they keep winning games they really have no business winning. On Saturday they got totally outplayed by Washington and stole the game in the shootout. Then last night they spent the second half of the game getting thumped by St. Louis only to win less than a minute into OT. (Thanks to Mike Smith for keeping the team in the game.) Their last 5 wins have all been in OT/SO.
I'm sure the cruddy defense is giving Dave Tippett nightmares. He looks so unhappy after every game. And I mean, even after they win. I get it though. The sloppy defensive play is maddening.
Ah well. At least they're winning. If you play in the Western Conference you simply have to keep winning just to keep up. If some more of your teams could help us out and actually beat Anaheim and San Jose I'd really appreciate it. So, you know, thanks Florida. Wait, Florida? Florida beat Anaheim yesterday? Florida??

It's going to be tough for any team -- try as hard as the Flyers might -- to catch them for the highly coveted "Craziest Effin' Team In The NHL" Award that I present every year. Obviously, Rolston was in over his head trying to coach that roster, and Regier needed to go years ago, so cutting those guys loose was probably the right move. But bringing in Ted Nolan and handing Pat Lafontaine the GM job? Keep up the crazy, Sabres!

Hockey!
But yeah, after an impressive win over the Ducks on Thursday, the Canes dropped two straight to the Blues and Bruins. Which isn't horrible, given the fact that those are both excellent hockey teams, but the team is still under .500, wouldn't even make the playoffs in the Metro division right now, and only scored three goals in those two losses (I can't even remember when the last time was that this teams scored more than non-shootout goals in a game was, that's how anemic this offense has been). The next two games are against Detroit and Boston, so it's not like the competition is getting any easier than it has been lately, but we really do need to win at least one of those games.
