I'm very annoyed at the Rangers' sudden lack of scoring. But still, Rask was insane last night, can't blame them completely.

I'm driving up to Dallas tomorrow for the Rangers-Stars game. The Rangers have just dropped two in a row, so they need this game to get back on track. It'll be Rick Nash's second game back after being out for over a month, so hopefully he can get going again. I'd say good luck to the Rangers, but that's not really in the Hurricanes' best interests, so...hey, wouldn't it be really cool to see Tyler Seguin score four goals in a game again, in person? I definitely think it would be great to see Seguin score four goals in person. Heck, you know what would be even better? If he scored six! Yeah! That'd be awesome! ::bats eyelashes innocently:: The Devils are out West this week, and I'm too much of an old lady to stay up for those late games. Which sucks, because the Ducks are my secondary team, and I would love to see that one, especially now that Getzlaf is back in the lineup. Of course, I'm probably just being spared having to watch the Devils get obliterated, because I don't really believe that their recent (relative) resurgence is a sign of their true nature.

The Flyers are a hockey team again! All thanks to Mike Richards! I miss him so much. )= But seriously, thank god for the Metro division being terrible. Hopefully they can keep scoring and putting some wins together. Finally getting solid goaltending and having the entire team collapse around it is too cruel a joke.

I was happy to see the Avs put an end to their first losing streak of the season last night. They did exactly what I said they needed to do - score and block more goals. It's so simple!!

Coyotes have been off for 4 days. Which is weird. And unsettling. Because not playing for 4 days means all the other Western Conference teams have caught up to them or passed them. Last week was good. Beating St. Louis and Tampa Bay, plus taking Chicago to the shootout. Next two games are looking really tough. Colorado tomorrow and Anaheim on Saturday. Coyotes have been thumped by Anaheim twice already. I looked at the schedule. I think every team the Coyotes play in November has a winning record. So far they only have 1 loss in regulation. Really hope they can score points in at least one of these next two games. Also hope they rediscover how to play defense. So guacamole, what is the secret to beating the Avs? What should I be looking out for in the game tomorrow?

What should I be looking out for in the game tomorrow? I think the best bet is to get a quick lead on them. Usually, if they score the first goal, they win. Also, their penalty kill was looking a little weak for a few games there, so there's that to look for.

Hmmm. Well, the Coyotes shockingly have a decent power play this season. They have a new PP coach. And the addition of Mike Ribeiro seems to have helped. Hope it doesn't come down to special teams, though, because the Coyotes penalty kill is something of a mess right now.
I'm not sure the Coyotes scoring first will help. They are prone to defensive breakdowns this season. It is driving Dave Tippett crazy. They often let teams come back on them. However, they play really well when trying to come from behind. It is maddening. I've had enough thrilling comeback wins to last the whole season.
I'm really hoping the extra days of rest will help the Coyotes. Their defense was really banged up.
Hopefully it is a good game.

I'm glad the Avs seem to have recovered from that 3 game stumble. I really like how well they do staying on close games. Saturday night against the Kings was a nail biter. I think Matt Duchene is going to enjoy his Team Canada jersey.

(Poor, poor Sabres fans. And to add insult to injury -- those new third jerseys! Did you think things couldn't get worse? TA DA!)

I can't even fathom the string of events that led to that jersey actually going into circulation. Two tones of yellow! A totally different color in the back! Sleeves that look like they've been dipped in paint! Numbers that don't matching anything on the rest of the jersey! Ugly fonts! A word mark! Inspirational messages in the collar! Accentuated armpits! Let's go Buff-a-lo!

Isn't that a great story? Acrostic? My personal favorite inspirational thing was the Carolina Hurricanes' "Whatever it takes" after losing the first two games of the '06 playoffs. It was trite but almost all this kind of stuff is trite. I'm also probably biased.

flyinggrayson Wow, that inspirational message is amazing. I love that "discipline" is on there. Aren't hockey players the best? Needing little tags in their shirts to remind themselves not to do stupid shit while at work. Roy Batty's Pet Dove I don't think we need to ever bring up the '06 Canes-Devils series again, thankyouverymuch.

Before the Avs game Saturday night we took the kids on a long hike. There was about 7 minutes left in the game and the Avs were up 2-0, so since my 5 year old was falling asleep, we decided to beat traffic. We got to the car and suddenly it was 2-1. As we get on the freeway, the Wild ties it up with 4 seconds left. We listen to overtime driving home then sit in the driveway listening to the shoot out, which the Avs won. My wife was apologizing the whole time, but since it was her birthday AND she was the one who wanted to go that night, I could hardly blame her for having us leave early, or else run the risk of having her accuse me of making her present all about me. Either way, it was a great game, with the Avs now 19-6-0. They're starting a three game stretch in Canada, but Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver all have losing records, so I'm hoping to be 22-6-0 by this time next week.

Canes went 1-0-2 to wrap up a trip out west this week, and while it's nice to pick up 4 of 6 points in three road games, the two overtime losses were against the Oilers and the Flames. Weirdly, their best game came in a very solid 3-1 victory over the much-better-than-Calgary-or-Edmonton-could-hope-to-be Coyotes. Cam Ward continues to be wildly inconsistent, while Justin Peters continues to play incredible hockey, ranking 7th in the NHL in save % (.929), and 8th in GAA (2.16). It's amazing how quickly this guy has grown from a seemingly expendable marginal 3rd string goalie into the team's best goalie, given the fact that he's already 27; I really hope he can keep it up. If he does keep it up, and if Anton Khudobin can continue his solid play in net when he eventually returns, the rallying cry of an until-recently unrealistically-pessimistic faction of the fanbase of "trade Cam Ward!" may actually be this team's best option; the only question is who would be desperate enough to take on Ward's $6mil/year contract. On the offensive side of things, Jeff Skinner continues his incredibly strong play when healthy this season; he scored a really nice goal right off the faceoff in Phoenix on Saturday and he has something like eight goals in his last seven games. Eric Staal has also been excellent recently. And we're somehow still third in the Metro division, so there's actually some reason to be (very, very, very) cautiously optimistic in Carolina.

Martin Jones is 6-0-0 with a 0.82 GAA and a save percentage of .972. He is in six games already tied for the league lead in shutouts, and these are the first 6 starts of his career! That is all I have to say about hockey!

The Phoenix Coyotes have a lot of injuries to key players right now. They are essentially limping through this month. You're right, though, they are still better than Calgary or Edmonton. It has been a very frustrating month, as they are generally keeping games close, but seeming to lose late. They really need some of these players back to help them gain a bit of edge back. Actually, the captain, Shane Doan, has now entered Arizona sports history for having the weirdest illness/injury which causes the player to miss games. This award was previously held by baseball player Conor Jackson, formerly of the Arizona Diamondbacks. His career was basically ruined when he contracted Valley Fever. Shane Doan has now outdone him by falling victim to Rocky Mountain Spotter Fever. In addition to that being more rare and a far sillier name of a disease, it is actually a much more serious illness which theoretically could have killed him.

The Sabres just won in OT on this goal which is literally the greatest thing I've ever seen. The best part though was the Coyote who finally spotted the puck and casually pulled it out and flipped it on to the ice like no one could see him.

That Sabres OT goal was one of the weirdest I've ever seen. And this is exactly what I was talking about. The Coyotes are hanging in games, but they can't seem to win.
The Coyotes fans are really whining about this one. Lots of complaints that the play should have been whistled dead when the ref lost sight of the puck. Which is probably true. But, as Dave Tippet said after the game, if the team had played better then fluky things like this wouldn't be costing them the game.
