Gentle Herpes, contender with NerdInTheBasement for the Daytime Emmy for Firstie Sniping, has got the most likes that have ever been awarded to one comment: on the cancellation of Community. Even with the general increase in upvotes since NuDisqus, that's saying something. The previous record holder was the more obscure DallasDude71, giving voice to the voiceless about the Old Country redesign.

It so happens, I've been keeping a running list this year. Among the best:
I don't ask for much from a TV show, just basic things like a premise, characters, and plot. -- @silent Spy on AHS: "Protect the Coven", 1/16/14
Yeah my family listened to Pete Seeger so often when I was a child that I half thought my parents must have been friends with him. They weren't, except in the sense that he was a friend to everyone in need of it. -- Scrawler, "RIP Pete Seeger", 1/28/14
Absolutely. Whenever I watch Casablanca, It's A Wonderful Life or His Girl Friday I always feel like I'm seeing the purest distillations of what I'm looking for in cinema. – C.C. Baxter, “Where to start with Cary Grant,” 2/6
Which if you believe in the multiverse interpretation of physical cosmology, not only did Ricky Coogin's butt touch Colin Firth's in another parallel universe, they both occupied the same space and were as one buttock. – CineCraft, “Hugh Jackman to host”, 2/11
He used to be a well-respected and serious commenter back in the pre-Disqus days here at the AVC. Then, one day, he fell into a vat of acid but survived and was still able to comment. But that's not what turned him, no. It was the Disqus change at first, then the website revamp. Soon, he noticed that more and more trolls would try to contradict his every word, inciting flamewars that saw no extinguishing. Then, the spambots took over his account and one day he could not log in. When he was finally able to, he saw that he had to merge an account with Disqus but lost all of his user history. Days, weeks, months, and years of comments erased forever. It was then he decided he would take his vengeance out on the world that hurt him so. The thing he once loved. He is now... The Downvote Fairy – Eat_Up_Martha, “Rob Huebel to have”, 2/14
I could theorize that, the Cheers bar signifies different things to different people- a place for recreation, a place for work- and accommodates a greater range of tones than a perpetually crowded bar, but I suspect the real truth is just that Cheers was really good. – Roswulf, “Mixology is a nightmare”, 2/25
You know this is going to sound a bit twee or melodramatic. But before the computer, we had Rolodexes. These were carousels that divided alphabetically contacts that you could spin to get an address or phone number that you had written on the cards or you could just staple a persons business card. As my friends and or contacts began to die, I could not throw away their cards. So I kept them in a bottom drawer….then I just started rubber banding them. When I moved to LA in 95 I looked at my bundle when packing up my office. I had 63 cards. It was the hardest thing I ever did to throw those away, but it seemed the tide was turning what with the new protocols hitting the health industry. I still had four friends, very close ones in fact once in LA, pass, three that I had to return East for. But it was one of the most bittersweet and hopeful things I ever did tossing those out. Like some strange ritual for hope. Hard to explain. So yes, seeing physical deterioration was heartrending. But I swear, perusing those cards was almost worse. Because you couldn't help but remember them so alive. – Alien Jesus, “The Normal Heart”, 5/22
You know, every once and awhile I just marvel at how deeply embarrassing it must be to be an actor. – La Pipe, Night Shift promotional photo, 5/27

I still like Gentle Herpes' suggestion of "An Incovenienter Truth" as a possible sequel title in the Newswire announcing the sequel. Sequel threads have gotten a bit tired, but this was before all that. I realize that his "I got a Community notification for this?" comment has a jillion upvotes, but I never gave one sweet, fancy fuck for democracy.
As to Spider Gent, it was just a re-hashing of "Spider Mensch", which was started in the newswire about Spider-Man possibly being Jewish. It was a collaborative effort, so I suppose it can't be a commie. Here's the original collaboration:
Spider Mensch, Spider Mensch He can schlep your piano bench Spins a dreidel, any size Catches schnooks in his goy disguise Oy vay! Here comes the spider guy!
(The fact that it doesn't rhyme at the end pleases me--I can't recall who did that part and am too slack to look it up)
My favorite comments tend to be the really crazy ones that don't get a lot of upvotes (I imagine people saying "oh, I don't get the reference" and checking out). Sometimes I find out they're just an obscure reference, which raises the interesting but unanswerable question about where referencing ends and plagiarism begins. Sometimes I'll search a great comment on google to see if it's a reference, and if I still can't find it I'm duly impressed. I remember well (*a.v. club members sigh and sit down grudgingly on the floor, realizing that grampa's going to be a while) one thread where we were quoting from the movie Airplane--the white line/blue line thing that devolves into whether the woman announcer should get the abortion, and the male assures her it's a safe procedure, etc. Jean_Luc_de_Lemur commented: "Plus, they have bugles in the waiting room". Maybe that's a reference, but I couldn't find it. Anyway, it's perfect; inscrutable; nuts. Are they real bugles, for people to play in the waiting room while waiting for abortions? Taps for the fetus, perhaps? Or are they those tasteless corn snacks, set out in bowls for people to munch on carelessly while waiting for an abortion? Both visions please me immensely, as does the context wherein these are offered as a selling feature to get an abortion. I imagine a young woman hesitating over the decision, but ultimately being won over by the fact that she will be served bugles in the waiting room. I love the originality of it. I use references too, having a bit of a rolodex mind, but I'm happiest with my own comments when they're more original. I like the a.v. club comment section best when it's not just the cover band of wit. That particular comment was brief and, to me, hysterical, but Lemur got exactly zero upvotes for that apart from my own. And that's why you NEVER COUNT UPVOTES.

And that's why you NEVER COUNT UPVOTES. I've never specialized in the witty comment, as some of you know, but the most upvotes I ever got (eighty-something) were for quoting 30 Rock dialogue.* That was all it took, apparently: just parroting a couple of (very funny) lines someone else had written.* *Cerie: Liz, it means so much to me to have a role model who's in her thirties. Liz: Cerie, I'm forty-one. Cerie: ...I don't know what that is.

Yeah, quoting/referencing beloved material in a particularly apt situation is a great way to get upvotes because people like the things that they already like. I hope I'm not sounding like a jackass about this, because god knows I love quoting classic Simpsons and regularly do so. It's a bit disappointing for me to read a great comment and find out it's a quote from an obscure cartoon, but I've paraphrased the semi-obscure show Black Books so I'm not exactly the king of proper attribution myself. The fact that it's not original doesn't mean it isn't still a great post; to me, however, it's not as great as it would be if it were a (more) original thought.
Counting upvotes may be the fairest way to determine the quality of a comment, but my roundabout point is that I wouldn't necessarily vote them to be the best comments, especially if they rely on memes and popular quotes. It's just personal taste, though, and I can only speak for myself, and I am a jerk.

Ya I really liked that first one a lot, that contrarian historical explanation was hilarious, I don't know how many times I bite my tongue about oh technically such and such wasn't quite that way at all historyblah blah blah history, and if it was real that would probably be what actually happened

For this year's Leonard Pierce Memorial AVC Screw-Up, I'd like to nominate the Frozen/Prince post that was deleted after commenters pointed out it was from a completely bullshit site. Way to go with the fact-checking there guys. (2013's was that review that got borked in transit, giving us ":cease to exist" and other such gems.)

I separate mine out into good comments and funny comments, but the good comments are pretty long so I'll just post some of the funny ones. I have links to the articles too if people want context (although they're fine without). Also, Jean-Luc Lemur the Aladdin comments were there too : (first two same thread) "Xbox 350"? Sounds like a Russian knock-off. "You want Xbox 350? Is just as a good!" ~ Neshcom You are still pregnant? No? Then is good abortion. ~ nummymuffincookoobutter He who deletes his purchase history is doomed to repeat it. ~ Captcha Reader I recommend leaving your dick someplace you're sure he'll find it and see if he puts it in himself on his own. ~ The Anachronist "And The Lord said, "wait unto 2 minutes to cool" But the men headed not The Lord and feasted And when The Lord saw his bounty hastily consumed He smote the roofs of their mouths, and tongues and they did burn forever more" - Hot Pockets 2:30-3:00 ~ Chuck Noblet You Mad Bro?: Part II: Come At Me, Bro ~ Eat Up Martha TELL US ABOUT YOUR CLITORIS! WHERE IS EVERYBODY GOING? ~ My Mom Says I'm Cool Agreed, it's impossible to fuck to Imagine. ~ StefMo (in response to "those kids are from a family of inbreds"): The preferred term is ancestrally-streamlined. ~ Albino Horse Eye (next two same thread) A girl was about to give my buddy a blowjob, holding his cock like a microphone, and whispered, "I don't want to do this" into the mike. He was like "What?" She replied, "Oh, nothing," and proceeded to blow him. He was convinced she was having a private aside with penis. ~ Secret Downvoter Once, I met a girl at a happy hour (YEARS ago) and we wound up going back to her place. Things progress. She removes my jeans, and you-know-who pops out of the front flap of my boxers. She looks at me, then at my member. "Hello, dinner" she whispers. Every once in a while I think about that and crack the fuck up. Who says that? ~ True Pud

WHAT THE HELL. I'm looking at this Vox tweet. I'm gone for one week to conference and Todd is seriously leaving? The day he announced it caused a goddamn mess on the Old Country and Twitter; everyone was so upset. It really sucks. There are still writers there I like but what the hell is gonna happen to the TV Club? Lemme tell you, if O'Neal or Barsanti ever announce they are leaving there will be much weeping and rending of garments (not in a fun way) at the MLA household.
