The day he announced it caused a goddamn mess on the Old Country and Twitter; everyone was so upset. It really sucks. There are still writers there I like but what the hell is gonna happen to the TV Club? Lemme tell you, if O'Neal or Barsanti ever announce they are leaving there will be much weeping and rending of garments (not in a fun way) at the MLA household. Handlen's not going anywhere, right? Not according to his Twitter, no. Marah and Sonia and Erik also appear to be sticking around.

(I feel like such a creep referring to them by their first names, though I suppose I've spoken to Marah on the phone before so I'm allowed on that count, maybe)

I may have to compose my second tweet ever to thank Todd for his time.

Handlen and Amelie were what got me started, and O'Neal and Todd were what kept me around. Lately, it's been feeling like the only reason I show up any more is to comment.

You know, a lot of people have been decrying this as the end of the site, basically, but as long as the commentariat are fun to hang out with, I'm happy. And we still have a lot of fun writers around, O'Neal and Barsanti and Teti are all particularly fun for example, and they interact with the community. Even if I end up in the "I'm only here to comment" field, the comments are fun, so I'm happy. Besides, it'd be hard for the AV Club to ever get as bad as SuicideGirls did *knocks on wood*, so I feel spoiled complaining too much. Todd will be missed though.

Nice over the top and odd response to a spam post:

Originally, it was about a US- sniper with over 300 confirmed kills. I can't say for sure where it originally came from, but i think it was 4chan. It has been "changed to fit the situation" like mohd did ,mohd just used one of them. I can't check this at work, but if you just put the first one and a half sentences (until shire seals, which was Navy Seals originally, i believe) into google you should find it's origins quickly. Again, it's funny, but I think a commie nomination shouldn't be given out for a cut&paste Job. ETA: found it: encyclopediadramatica.es/Gorilla_warfare/Copypasta_Archive

I'd like to recognize this outstanding post from Battlecar Compactica on the popularity of soccer in the US: www.avclub.com/article/espn-streaming-service-caught-guard-american-inter-206320?#comment-1458235855I think most of the rationales for why soccer's not as popular here, and homegrown sports are, are just silly attempts at reasoning backwards. If soccer were the most popular American sport, and less popular elsewhere, it would be because it was invented in 19th century England and is therefore part of our cultural patrimony; because the ability of one singularly talented player to make the decisive difference is a tribute to American individualism; because the offsides rule plays into the American belief that you have to work for what you get and not just lounge around by the finish line waiting for good luck to get you across, etc. And baseball would offend American sensibilities because it prohibits teams from batting their best hitters over and over again, and instead indulges the socialist conceit that everyone ought to get an equal chance to play regardless of ability. It would be regarded as antithetical to the idea that talent wins out over luck, because (for many reasons) baseball is a sport where the better team is unusually susceptible to losing to an inferior opponent in any given game. It would offend the American idea of a strong work ethic because, come on, what kind of "sport" takes 17 in-game breaks, and has the best players all sitting on the bench half the time even when play is underway? Those kinds of "this sport is a metaphor for our very identity as a people" arguments bug me when they're used to mythologize American sports that I like, and they're about as useful when applied to sports that are more popular in other countries.

I too would also like to nominate not just one, but of course, every single comment I have made in the past year.

Holy smokes those are great. I'm so sad I didn't stay up to comment there when the post first went up last night. To paint a picture here: I am up while @ifwewait is sleeping in a bit. Those posts were so hilarious I had to smother my laughter so as not to wake him, and I...did not succeed. I'm a terrible girlfriend.

Oh man, I'm still reading it: "Oh, I should mention. One of the paramedics was incredibly cute. The one who cut my shirt off. SO totally my type. More of a jock than a twink, but wouldn’t look a bit out of place in the A&F quarterly. I actually had my wits enough to crunch my abs when he cut my shirt off..." Classic idiotking!

The ab crunching bit was what put it over the top for me and lead to officemates giving me looks of, "WTF are you laughing about?"

Thanks Pops! There are actually two more, because when I was asleep people replied to stuff I'd written and I felt like I owed it to them to reply in the same vain. So here's Nudeador Viking the Third explaining how he saw "40 Days and 40 Nights" at an Italian restaurant ( Protip: It was a pizzeria ) and Nudeador Viking the third puking a little in his mouth at the notion of Montypark getting a blowjob while also accusing his father of banging a drug fiend and insinuating that Nudeador had had his way with Montypark's mother ( Note to self: Stop reading Charles Dickens novels and history books about the Gilded Age).

I attempted to find NV's comments but got depressingly trapped in the bitter "all women are like THIS" thread peppered with some delightful "gays have it so easy cause they just want sex" and then I had to lay down and take a nap.

It was a lot more fun when it first went up and was just idiotking crunching his abs after a serious car wreck because the EMT was cute and me pretending to be some kind of horny 19th century aristocrat to mock Montypark. When I went back yesterday to respond to someone who had responded to me it also was a major bummer to scroll through.

MrsLangdonAlger Disqus felt something was happening and tried to put a stop to it. I could barely scroll through the thread and like it, and that's now, 11 hours after the last post...
