This really is one of the best things to happen on the Old Country. Good show, Nudeviking. Good show. The more I do this, the more I find certain words and phrases of the Gilded Age creeping into real life. Yesterday I nearly sent a work related email that included the line, "The updated prices will become valid in a fortnight's time." I have a new found, hither unknown level of respect for noted gimmick poster Cookie Monster since his gimmick is more likely to attract looks of dismay if executed outside of the internet. Mine just gets "why did you use the word 'fastidious' instead of 'detail oriented' in this report?" This sort of thing really pisses me off. There's no reason for a term like "detail-oriented"to exist in our language--we have plenty of ground that cover not just detail-oriented, but various shades of detail-oriented. I feel like this sort of thing is especially bad in scientific writing, where you have a lot of non-native speakers writing in English (and a broad non-native audience) and there's a bit of suspicion if your writing's a bit too enthusiastic or fluent (like if you're writing well you're compensating for weak results). It can also be hilariously bad in Europe, where you have bureaucratic Euro-English that's entirely made by Euro-speakers and full weird stuff that stems from trying to bridge conceptual gaps between various European languages and English, with the occasional false friend thrown in.

I'm liking this new Victorian Spambot gimmick. The person behind it will almost definitely run out of steam but I'll enjoy the ride until then.

If at least SOME posts/gimmicks from this week's SL don't make it in, I'm giving up. Also, yeah, I'll think about breaking out "idiotking's penis" as a gimmick account closer to awards season.

Montypark looks like an Aryan Ethan Hawke. I see Guy Pearce as Ed Exley, tho both totally do it for me.

I sat back at my desk and laughed aloud at the ludicrousness of the fact that a fake Gilded Age libertine (who is also probably a cat) was corresponding with a possibly fake sentient penis via letters. I heartily endorse a "idiotking's penis" account.

The ongoing series of O'Neal newswires about the 50 Shades of Grey movie, including today's Christian-themed installment, have to fit some category because they are too excellent. Better than the Entourage series. Holy crap, as they say.

Nudeviking I just wanted to let you know that your excellent letters have inspired me to write similar, though of course not nearly as good, letters to my friends. I write them in the hopes they bring joy to others as you have brought joy to me.

My favorite outcome of this entire sorted "randomly becoming a gimmick poster" affair is the fact that other people have taken to responding to me in kind (including at one point a foaming-mouth MRA lord of douchebaggery who suddenly became much more civil when having to work "fortnight" and "besmirch" into his response to me basically calling him a dick). I am of the mind that the more people who write as though it is still 1898, the better!

Though my accumulative use of Thesaurus.com becomes increasingly burdensome to explain to my employer, I'm all in favor of this. But might I suggest that we adjust our speech patterns to one year further, so we can merrily carouse as if it were the year of the Lord 1899?

MajorDada's college drinking story made me laugh so hard. Short, sweet, perfect. "One time in college, we had the brilliant idea of doing Robotussin because it was legal for us to buy. Two shots in, we all realized you can't do shots of that shit. And then the drowsiness factor set in."

Okay I know nobody's going to think much of comments in reviews for this sort of thing, but this comment by beinggreen from a Farscape review is still making me laugh weeks later... and... like... maybe it's even funny out of context?

My0My0My: That essay was widely misunderstood in Swift's time. What you have to know is that the Irish consider potatoes to be their children.

The question that prompted Archmage’s defense prompted this response from me. Do we have eleven-year olds posting on the site?
