So, so good. Now I wait for Swans in May. Might want to pack those earplugs for Swans now! I had such a crushing concert news experience yesterday. The list of Nick Cave's openers was presented to me as "Mark Lanegan Opening for Nick Cave on Summer Tour!!!" Woo! I have tickets to that! ::runs around in circles like a puppy:: ::looks closer:: "Mark Lanegan Opening For Nick Cave on Summer Tour... West Coast Dates!!!" FUCK! I'm stuck with stupid ol' Kurt Vile. (I actually know nothing about Kurt Vile except a) his AVC cover of NIN was horrible and b) he's not Mark Lanegan.)

(I actually know nothing about Kurt Vile except a) his AVC cover of NIN was horrible and b) he's not Mark Lanegan.) Ha, I thought the same thing before posting! At the past two Swans shows I've attended I momentarily took one of my earplugs out just to hear the difference. "A lot" would be an understatement. For what it's worth, Kurt Vile's a pretty cool musician. His music is chill without compromising any power. I'm pretty excited to see Devendra Banhart open because I suspect his folk is right up my alley. Your reason b) still stands, though. Neither of these artists are Mark Lanegan, who I'm sure will be summoned by Cave to do Blixa's vocals for "The Weeping Song" again. For the most part these openers range from solid to totally awesome. I hope the Bad Seeds find a way to bring them into their set like he did with Sharon Van Etten (her ghostly backing vocals over "People Ain't No Good" were a highlight at the Beacon last year).

nachomatrimony Oh man, that Beacon show was freakin' amazing last year. This summer's show has a lot to live up to. I have tickets to see Sharon Van Etten again, too. I haven't actually gotten around to listening to her albums yet, but I was really impressed with her opening act. I'll try to keep an open mind about Kurt Vile but... Sigh.

Yes, I will take earplugs for Swans.
Saw Tinariwen couple hours ago. They blew the roof off the place.

I now have tickets for Neutral Milk Hotel in April! Huzzah! Awesome! Just saw them a few weeks back in Austin. You will love it. I will be seeing Dwight Yoakam at the Austin Rodeo this Sunday. I'm not huge on country, but I do like classic country, and Dwight is one of the few modern country artists who keeps it old school, and I like his dedication to the Bakersfield sound. Also, I found this video online from the Chvrches show I was at here in November. It was 35 degrees at an outdoor show, but God, it was such a great show!

I just got my tickets for the nationwide Beck presale! It must have been preordained: there's a show driving distance from my in-laws, who will put us up and let us drive their car, and her dad's retiring so we have another reason to visit.
I'll tell you a secret - the sale code is "PHASE".

My next gig is on Friday when I'll be seeing The Murderburgers, Scotland's finest pop-punk band (probably/maybe/I don't really know about the competition) and pretending I'm not 30.

Hoping to go to double-bill acoustic classic punk show tomorrow night with Glen Matlock from the Sex Pistols and Sylvain Sylvain from the New York Dolls. Really like the Dolls and I love acoustic versions of songs I know as electric, so I've been really looking forward to this and was pretty bummed out when it was temporarily cancelled.

I saw Dwight Yoakam today at the Austin rodeo. He put on a great show. He did covers of "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash, "Act Naturally" by Buck Owens, and "Suspicious Minds" by Elvis. Good stuff.

Saw The Notwist yesterday, I only know their Neon Golden album, as was the case of most of the audience judging by the reception of the song taken from it. And based on it and the few songs I listened to on Youtube, I expected a rather pleasant if a little subdued affair. Boy was I wrong, the first song fit the bill, but it turns out that they rock rather hard (or should it be they blip?). Those were still very pretty songs, but the rythmic part was greatly highlighted, making for a very fun and lively gig, with a minimalist, but very efficient light show.
I also witnessed the most obnoxious concert goer I've ever seen (or a new variety at least), when she was wasn't texting or filming the gig, she was smoking (yes, it was an indoor venue), and she seemed to misinterpret people kindly asking her to stop as playful attempts to chat her up.

I'm seeing St. Vincent tonight. I'll let you know how it is.
Actually, I have an extra ticket if anyone's interested.

Saw Tycho a couple of days ago, very nice quiet electronica; pretty much the worst thing to see live. It was actually performed by a live band, it didn't make it that much better. Opening act was Sylvain Esso, which based on the AV Club SXSW reports is the new hip thing, it's fairly good electro-pop, they have a good stage presence, she has a very pretty voice. I'll happily see them again (and it looks like I will as they are opening for tUnE-yArDs in a couple of months. But I can't help wondering what's so special about them.

I just took tickets for Rock en Seine in August. Can't wait! Arctic Monkeys, Janelle Monae, St. Vincent, and Warpaint? Damn, that's a great lineup. Also, I got the shit beat out of me during a Taking Back Sunday/The Used concert last night. It was magical.

Actually, I'm going several states away for this show. It just happens that we have a place to stay relatively nearby. They emailed the announcement of that presale code exactly 12 hours before it started.

I saw the Mants, Phenomenauts and the Creepshow tonight.
The Mants were pretty fun amusing punk band. The Phenomenauts blew me away, holy shit they do a good show. The Creepshow were pretty awesome too although I could've done with less moshers.
As in none, I hate moshers and I hope they get run over by their grandmothers.

Over the weekend I saw a German instrumental noise making trio called Don Vito. I watched most of it with the goofiest smile you'll ever see - I was in awe - and looking around at the rest of the crowd I was pleased to see they were all in the same state. If you're a fan of Lightning Bolt/Hella/Don Caballero you should watch this:

Yesterday went to a double bill of Tim Hecker and Merzbow/Pandi/Gustafsson Trio. It was loud. Merzbow/Pandi/Gustafsson opened with an all-out sonic assault, it was absolutely amazing. Tim Hecker was quite interesting too, I don't know his albums so have no idea how similar they would be (one guy behind a computer and console, no idea what he actually did), I liked the simple repetitive melodies over the noisier and loud bedrock. I wouldn't have minded seats though.

It was really good, I love this type of stuff live. It was at Oval Space in London, I've been going to a few gigs there lately, they have a really nice programmation (mostly hipsterish stuff), and also do non-music stuff, they have a designer market every first Sunday of the month which is really nice. And they're apparently also doing whisky tastings from May.

Got back from Of Montreal not that long ago. This was the first time I saw them with their new stripped down lineup and they were just as great as ever. The show was in the lobby of a museum, so much smaller than the other spaces I've seen them, but they didn't really make any attempt to adjust the theatrics of the show, which made everything pretty chaotic but a lot of fun.
Also I now have a huge, huge crush on Rebecca Cash.

About 30 minutes ago, I bought tickets to Nickel Creek. They will be playing at ACL Live at the Moody Theater in Austin in August. Pretty stoked that they are back together, touring, and releasing new music again.

Very cool, Cypher! I think Chris Thile is one of the most interesting people making music today. I like the fact that he's pushing the folk/bluegrass genre past its limits.

I am seeing Vampire Weekend in Austin tomorrow (Friday) night. I'm pretty excited about it. I still think Modern Vampires of the City is one of my top five records of the last decade.
