Sam Roberts tomorrow night, for a crowd that will almost certainly be mostly border crossers.

MrsLangdonAlger and I are seeing Vampire Weekend June 5th in Chicago. Can't wait! So it was a good show! I don't really care for Wild Cub. I had only heard one of their songs before, which I linked on my previous comment. They are a kind of generic dance rock band, of which there are so many right now. Some of their songs had a decidedly Prince-like feel to them, which should have resonated with me much more than they did, but I just wasn't able to get into them. They were not bad by any means, but not great either. EDIT: But I just saw that MLA posted that Wild Cub will not be playing the Chicago show, so I guess you don't have to worry about them! Vampire Weekend, however, was excellent. They opened with "Diane Young," which surprised me. I kind of figured that would have been an encore tune since it's so energetic and one of the best songs on the last album, but it was a pleasant surprise since it's a hell of a way to start the show! The set list was pretty much evenly distributed with songs from all three albums. I think the highlights for me were "A-Punk" and "Ya Hey." They pumped up the crowd pretty well, and everyone was dancing and seemed really into it. My only complaint, if I were to have one, would be that they stick very closely to the album versions of the songs. There's not a lot of playing with the arrangements or jamming of any sort, but they sounded excellent and played a ton of great tunes, so I left satisfied. Good times. I think you and MrsLangdonAlger will enjoy it! Have fun!

I've liked the few Cults songs I've checked out, so I have hopes they'll be better than it sounds like Wild Cub were. Diane Young is an interesting opener. It sounds like it worked though. I don't think there's any way I could be disappointed, assuming they're on and into it. Glad your show was fun!

Just booked to see Neko Case in August so yeah! But gutted that Spoon just announced a concert and it's same day as EMA for which I already have a ticket.

Rock on the Range in Columbus. Compared to past lineups, it might be the worst they've ever had (two of the three headliners are Avenged Sevenfold and Kid Rock). Still, a good number of bands I want to see like Guns N' Roses, Slayer, and a number of smaller names plus whatever acts I've never heard whose shows I'll wander into. Anyone else going?

Just booked the last ticket of the year's planned gigs (but of course more may turn up as the year goes on...). Most of them are fairly local, too. The slate is: Three Burlesque gigs locally (two tonight) (well, they do have music...) Current 93, Halifax Minster (a church), 10 May (amusingly, John Constantine's birthday.) Crippled Black Phoenix, Manchester, 24 May Swans, Leeds, 1 June ( small venue under a train viaduct - 50/50 that the sheer sound will cause a cave-in!) Son Lux, Leeds, 7 June Juno Reactor, Bradford ( Infest festival) 23 August Clint Mansell, London Barbican, 7 October Aside from a couple more local burlesque events, a London trip to meet a pal & the 3 day Cosmic Trigger event in November, that should be my travelling for the year.

Oh man, Swans will be incredible. I'm aiming to see them on the Aberdeen leg of that tour but the place they're playing up here isn't nearly as good a venue as The Pit

I saw Jake Shimabukuro last Saturday. I appreciated the musicality and virtuosity of his performance. I enjoyed his looping effects where he applied a backing rhythm, then played very fast and accurate solos on top of his own rhythm. I am praiseful of his graciousness regarding all his shout-outs that were personal to him. However, despite his talent and prominence in the niche of his ensconcing, I didn't dig watching a ukulele player get down for 75 minutes.

Well, Springsteen's headlining JazzFest today, and I... Am nowhere near. So, to make myself feel a smidge better, here's a few photos I took when I went in 2012!

Just booked to see Neko Case in August so yeah! She's a magical lady. Quite possibly literally. When I saw her at Coachella it started raining at the end of her set. In the desert. Now, did her voice cause a minor miracle? I'd like to think so.

glossolalia I saw the Antlers at All Tomorrow's Parties a few years ago and they were great! I hadn't heard them before, and uh, haven't listened to them since, but they put on a great show. Meanwhile, I spent 3.5 hours driving to and from NYC last night to see a 50-minute show of John Zorn, Bill Laswell, and Dave Lombardo. It, ultimately was worth it, but wtf? What kind of nonsense is a 50-minute set?! Anyway, I was expecting the show to be a lot more challenging than it was, so it was a wonderful surprise to have the music be almost melodic! (I like a lot of Zorn's compositions, but generally don't care for his sax stuff.) My docket of up-coming shows is looking pretty awesome right now: Afghan Whigs next week Chelsea Wolfe at the end of the month Sharon Van Etten next month Nick Cave in July

Saw The Hold Steady last night. The place was fairly small, so that was nice. Made the mistake of getting at the front, and felt very crushed for most of the gig. It was a fun gig still. Even though every one on stage apart from Graig Finn seemed a bit bored.
Next will be Janelle Monae on Friday.

I'd still have been happy to be there, but yes, I'm with you on set-lengths, especially since it sounds like there was no opening act? I remember being really annoyed when I saw Body/Head last summer, their set was barely more than 40 minutes, it was great but still. The opening act had played as long if not longer (it was Mystical Weapons, and they were really good too), but overall less than 1h30 of music for what was a relatively expensive gig felt a bit like a scam. The Stooges were playing that night, had I known I'd be out by 21.00, I'd have got a ticket for them too (the venues were right next to each other), I'd actually have been able to see their entire set as well.

Has anyone seen Chvrches? Trying to decide if I should go next month. Love the album but don't know how thrilling it would be live.

Less than 48 hours ago we bought plane tickets to Ohio for the parental birthday visit whose ulterior motive was a Beck concert. When the tour was announced there were no east coast solo dates outside NYC. This morning I found in my email a notice that he will be playing about half an hour from my house. No backsies because of said parental birthday. My only consolation is that the Ohio show is general admission outdoor standing instead of the local lame seated pavilion.

Aw Newsie I got excited for a minute there that you'd be at the Cleveland show with me, but when you started describing the venue I realized it was Columbus. Also, Alice in Chains on the 19th.

I'm going to see John Zorn play a solo organ concert on Saturday night, and see a show by jazz bassist William Parker on Sunday night. I also have a ticket to see a solo concert by free jazz saxophonist Peter Brotzmann later this month.

Janelle Monae last Friday was simply amazing, a properly great show.
Saw Tune-Yards last night, the music is really good live, it's mostly rhythm, and makes for a very fun night.

I also have a ticket to see a solo concert by free jazz saxophonist Peter Brotzmann later this month. Was it "The Hermetic Organ"? I heard that at the Met Museum last year and it was wild. I'm a little annoyed about concerts today. I have tickets to see the Afghan Whigs in Brooklyn tonight, which a few months ago (when the tickets went on sale) was super-exciting. But just last night, I picked up tickets to see them in Philly -- which is about 90-minutes closer to home than Brooklyn -- later this year. If the original choice had been Brooklyn OR Philly, I would have gone with just Philly. But now that I have the tickets for tonight's show, I feel like it would be stupid not to go. But... it's going to take me probably 2 hours to get there and 90 to get home, which sucks, no matter how great the show is. Woe is me, right?

So, it may have taken over 5 hours of driving in horrible traffic, but the Afghan Whigs show in Brooklyn turned out to be totally worth all the misery and woe! I can't believe I forgot what a good show they put on.
