Interesting. I got a very "Machine of Death" sort of feel from it. The cult's constant smoking reminds me of nothing so much as early X-Files' silent Cigarette Smoking Man. I'm going to keep watching, but bleak is definitely the right word. Helluva lead-in for John Oliver's show; I bet he's glad for a couple months of VEEP and Silicon Valley.

Latecomer here. Binge-watching to catch up. Interesting premise, but the show's weirdly and annoyingly executed in some parts. In addition to those Sonia already mentioned:

Who'd leave a dead dog in their car trunk overnight? And then let their teenage daughter borrow the car w/o warning her? And what teen and two classmates who found said dead dog in the trunk bury it? (No thought that perhaps the dog was rabid, and its carcass was being preserved for testing? Or that it was evidence in an animal abuse case?)

The lack of communication (from the father to the daughter) is astounding and unbelievable? No explanation why the daughter's forbidden to attend the Heroes' Rally? Or why there's a dead dog in the trunk?

How'd the glass in the upper cabinets get shattered? Did the deer jump in the sink or on the counter? What cop - especially one who's raising an adolescent daughter - would leave his kitchen in that condition without calling in someone to check it out? Or would fail to warn his daughter not to come home until the situation is resolved?

What's with the smoking GR's? Is that a prerequisite for acceptance? I get the connection to "don't waste your breath" and smoking, but not the reason for the smoking. Bizarro.
