Jasper Sapien. upvoted you on The Howling series got howlingly bad pretty quickly 20 minutes ago William T. Goat Esq. 10 months ago That's what I love about it! There's not really a villain; it's more of a culture clash thing. There's a brief explanation near the end that there was a worldwide pogrom against werewolves, which was only stopped by a mandate from the Pope that "werewolves are God's creatures too." Now there's an alternate history that should have inspired some sequels.

I have no idea what the context of this quote is and don't remember even posting this. Does it have something to do with the episode? Probably not since I never watched Community the day it was airing and I never commented in the Community threads. So why was I even in there in the first place? Gah, this upvote has ruined my afternoon.

I literally have no memory of this episode or what it was that allegedly scared me. Also, R&M has been on longer than it feels to me I guess.
EDIT: Actually I do remember this episode very well, obviously one of the most messed up moments in the show, I just didn't recognize it from the title.

bwat47 upvoted you on Battlestar Galactica: Miniseries, Part 1 2 days ago Jean-Luc_de_Lemur 3 years ago THIS WHOLE GODS-DAMNED COMMENT SECTION IS SPOILER LADEN One issue is that it’s very hard to sustain that with the population they have. It’s quite small, and though a bit of Googling reveals that while the fleet’s population is comparable to the median estimate for the Mayan city of Tikal, TIkal was only able to sustain itself by relying on a highly productive and (highly populated hinterland). While modern agriculture’s quite productive, it’s also essentially an engineering discipline that relies on a millennia of accumulated knowledge and interlinks with other professions (hydrology, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, etc.) which also require a lot of knowledge, and there’s also the thousands and thousands of years of optimizing the crops themselves. If the fleet were a colonizing fleet it might be possible, but I’m not confident Galactica’s refugees were capable of starting from scratch.Going back to Tikal, it’s also worth noting that the citizens there abandoned an advanced (for the time and region) urban lifestyle too. Although you give up agricultural surpluses and the nice stuff that makes it possible, on the individual level going back to a hunter-gatherer stage of life isn’t a bad idea. Hunter-gatherer societies tend to be less hierarchical, hunter-gatherers tend to have more spare time than their agricultural counterparts, they tended to be healthier than pre-modern agriculturalists, and they still have culture and their technology, while not high technology, can be pretty damn impressive (look at the kayak). Given that fleet society seemed to be degrading into castes and was very authoritarian, I think it’s a pretty understandable choice. In real history, the development of science and high technology was contingent on a lot of things going right, and I think if we re-ran the clock of history it’s possible we would have never had an industrial revolution at all. Adama and co. already knew that humanity already restarted once and apparently made a lot of the same mistakes—rationally it makes sense it wouldn’t happen again. Of course in the Galactica universe stuff doesn’t work that way, but the reasoning isn’t bad.Nonetheless, I think a show featuring them trying to maintain civilization and failing would have been fascinating, though. And successful hunter-gatherers have to know a lot about their environment—the Galactica crew and co. wouldn’t be able to just strike out on their own, they’d have to go native, which would also be cool to see. 12 View in discussion
