The feeling of dread after Hazel's appearance (which could have been incredibly goofy and yet somehow doesn't) right up into the final scene was insurmountable, and I gasped when it happened. Honestly, I'm still reeling, and I probably will be until next week's episode. What a gut punch. Her appearance could have been ridiculous, but it felt so tragic and at the moment, it really does cement that things will not end on a pleasant note. Glad to know I wasn't the only one who still gets the chills thinking about it. Oh, if you're curious, RTD had a great interview with Radio Times about the episode and why he wrote it that way. Here's the link.

WARNING: RANT
The Last Man On Earth, Season 1 "Alive in Tucson" - C "The Elephant In The Room" - D-
I'd never heard of this show until a friend (who I typically agree with on everything TV) recommended it to me this evening, so I swear I'm not actively trying to be a contrarian. But after watching the first two episodes, I had to research it, and this has apparently gotten mountains of critical acclaim. How?! The first episode was kind of interesting in its premise, I guess? It was mildly amusing watching Will Forte chuck bowling balls at fish tanks and lamps. But I'd be lying if I said I did so much as chuckle once. I thought it could've been somewhat salvageable, or maybe it got better as it wore on, but by the time the second episode rolled around it just ended up being "MAN SLOB, WOMAN SHREW" and like, what the fuck ever. I can get over the fact that apparently Phil never decided to leave the US in his search for other people. I can get over the fact that the only two people left on Earth are white and cisgendered (this is Fox, after all). But of course Phil has to have a fantasy about waking up to Alexandra Daddario and of course he's horrified when he actually wakes up and the last woman is ew, gross, Kristen Schaal, am I right folks??? She's a grammar nazi! She wants to obey road signs! She wants to clean and garden and get married! But why can't Phil just drink his booze and lay about? Oh, mercy, won't she just leave him be?!
It baffles me that anyone found this funny. I don't get it. What am I missing? Is it satire? Is it supposed to be ironic? It's certainly not funny. None of the emotional beats worked for me either, and the ones that came close - Phil's make-shift irrigation system - are beaten into the ground by stilted, repetitive dialogue.
I was shocked when I found out Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were behind this trainwreck. It's honestly the first thing I've ever watched from them that I haven't loved. I like Will Forte and Kristen Schaal too, but not here. Not like this. What a fucking travesty.
END RANT. Sorry. I needed to get that off my chest away from my IRL-connected social media.

Been watching Empire week after week. What can I say? I like Taraji P. Henson and the fact a black-centric soap is breaking ratings records, on broadcast TV no less!
It's so stupid and ridiculous, complete with jarring tonal shifts, a Courtney Love guest appearance, random musical numbers (hey, so that's what Estelle is up to these days!), and storylines would make noted schlockmeister Aaron Spelling positively beam.
So, you can say I enjoy it. It has everything needed to be a genuinely great bit of television, but considering the promo for next week features Jennifer Hudson as a soul-singing musical therapist who falls in love with a bipolar character, clearly the soap bubbles take priority.
At least it's funny.

If that actress isn't doing modeling for every brand of cosmetics, she really should.

True red turns pink or orange on my lips. I always have to go for "wine" or "blood" colours (Thank you, MAC!). They may also use some foundation/base on her lips to avoid bleed and to get the color completely even. And that's this week from "Tales of Cosmetics from a Tomboy!" Tune in next week to hear musings about whether BeneFit has anything in their line for people with mocha or darker skintones!

Well, rimjobflashmob, time for another week of Cucumber and Banana! Cucumber (Episode 7): A
This episode of Cucumber may not be quite as great as last week's creme de la creme outing, but it was way better than I had expected. I was a bit worried about it suffering from too much tonal unease, and there was a bit of that at the beginning of the episode. However, I love how clearly it saw Henry in all of his conflicting emotions. The car scene was just terrific, in no small part because you got to see the characters' more sympathetic sides, but the they each called each other on their respective bullshit. And I shamelessly loved the final ten minutes and how many characters from both Cucumber and Banana made guest appearances. Banana (Episode 7: 'Aiden and Frank'): AI absolutely adored Banana. I think it is probably my favorite episode (it's neck and neck with 'Violet & Sian'). The acting and writing were brilliant, as was the way the episode played with both reality and extended fantasy. What I loved the most was how clearly it saw it's characters and the bittersweet ending. They are so cute, you want them to get together, but the show knows that attraction plays an important part in relationships and ultimately, Aiden and Frank are just in different places in their life, and it wouldn't be fair to either to settle. The final shot with the numbers above all the people in the bar was lyrical and haunting; it was all the more perfect because it so poetically captured the fact there are countless stories of romance out there, but sadly, we'll never get a chance to see them all.

I still haven't seen the latest Banana unfortunately, but I wanted to reply that I too greatly enjoyed the penultimate episode of Cucumber! I'm giving it a tentative A- until we see if episode 8 sticks the landing, mostly because I'm not quite as fond of the ending as you. It kind of came conveniently out of nowhere - I know they've been mentioning offhandedly how sketchy of a living situation they're in, but blowing it all up literally the morning after the three bond felt a little on the nose. That said, both the bathroom and car scenes were fucking magnificent. Henry finally feels like a real person and not a caricature, and the tonal unease of the early going was very apt for memorial services in real life. I'll admit I was a bit worried about the show's follow-up to episode 6 but I'm glad my apprehension was for nought. I'll probably bump this ep's grade up to an A if the finale deals with the mass eviction/relocation in a similar fashion.

*Spoilers abound*
I caught up with The 100 over the weekend and completely fell in love with the show. I knew I was watching something special when the first season finale looked like it was going to end with the introduction of a new threat and then a fade to white. Instead, that white screen stuck around a bit too long and eventually morphed into a completely new set with the main character looking about as clean as she had since arriving on the ground. It's something that would have been saved for the first shot of the second season of most other shows considering the mountain men reveal was good enough. And then with each new episode of the second season, it felt as if something that happened in Season 1 was recontextualized to give it a greater sense of meaning and history. The show is incredible and with the finale on Wednesday, I can't wait to scour episodes for clues as to what's next. It's engrossing.

It concerns Vanessa (Sian's mum) and an illegal worker, Zahara. It looks heartbreaking, and I for one can't wait. I flip-flopped between A/A- with the Cucumber episode, but seeing that ridiculously fun house party at the very end, yeah, that pushed all the right buttons for me. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Aiden and Frank's episode of Banana.

rimjobflashmob, the ending of Cucumber and Banana is upon us! Cucumber: Episode 8 In many ways, this was the most fitting ending for a messy, ambitious, occasionally starkly powerful, occasionally wonky series. Much like Episode 6, it's the drama at its most Six Feet Under (they even have multiple time jumps!). The commune was doomed to last only so long. In any case, it was fun to see so many characters from Banana make appearances (go figure Aiden and Freddie would have a fling) and to watch the beautifully handled fallout of Daniel Coltrane's trial (thank fuck we missed out on the courtroom drama). But, some of the time jumps, while funny or interesting in their own right, don't really add up to a whole lot in the grand scheme of things. Which is perhaps the perfect metaphor for life itself. People may be awful, they may be kind, and their perfectly imperfect personalities may not always make for great drama, but I applaud RTD for taking as many risks as he did, even when he struck out. Grade: BSeries Grade: B+
Favorite Episode: Episode 6 Runner Up: Episode 7 Least Favorite Episode: Episode 2 Banana (Episode 8: 'Vanessa and Zara') E4, the youth-oriented sister network of Channel 4, was bold to give this episode the green light. Vanessa, a lesbian in her 60s, and Zara, an illegal teen immigrant who barely speaks English, is an odd enough pairing, but to not have any romantic tension between the two, and to not subtitle anything Zara is saying, is daring on so many levels. Of Banana's many accomplishments, it's effortless diversity, its panoply of stories relating to queer life, both romantic and otherwise, its balance between the realistic and the fantastic, has been nothing short of remarkable, and here, the whole episode plays like a great mini-play. Both actresses are wonderful, and if the ending can veer a hair too fair into fantasy and cuteness (despite the fact one character is almost certainly going to die; it sounds grimmer than how it plays out), it's still so warm-hearted and well-written, it's impossible not to smile. Banana is my choice for the best new series of 2015, and could very well become the drama I've seen all year, period. A glorious look at people in the rainbow and in the shadows; or as Aiden said at the end of Episode 7, 'it's all just part of some brilliant story.' I sincerely hope Ey gives it a second series. But, if not, it's a magnificent limited series and I can't wait to watch it again. It deserves to rank alongside Tales of the City and Queer as Folk. In fact, it may even be better than those two. Grade: A-Series Grade: AFavorite Episode: 'Violet and Sian' (Episode 3) and 'Scotty' (Episode 2) (tie) Runner-up: 'Aiden and Frank' (Episode 7) Least Favorite Episode: 'Josh and Sophie' (Episode 5) (but even that was really good)

I'm quite sad because we are entering kitten season and I am just sad because I wish I could save every cat. . So it's that time when I pull out the Audrey Hepburn doc. She never forgot the things that ticked her sensitivities. She will always be my role model.

Banshee update! Episode 7, "You Can't Hide From the Dead" A Banshee just pulled off one of the coolest sequences ever. A 20 minute heist pulled off through camera feeds. Yeah, I know, "uggh, that is like found footage" but the difference here? The editing was crisp, there was actual tension throughout, and it wasn't lazy. Most movies rely on this type of camera perspective just for a pull, they don't really do what they can with it, and that is why this is frowned upon. Banshee made spectacular work of it. It is a perfect showcase for why this show is so awesome, because it is willing to just do whatever week to week while never losing track of the plot threads going on. It also took two cliched plot types and was able to subvert them in the minor storylines, that was neat too! And with that this season so far has gone grade wise, A-, B+, A, A-, A-, A-, A Banshee right now is the best show on TV imo, and really the only shows I can see challenging it are Mad Men, Manhattan, or the Knick. It would take a weird turn for this type of creative momentum to derail so abruptly at the final stretch of the season. Banshee update! Episode 8, "All the Wisdom I Got Left" A- Episode 9, "Even God Doesn't Know What to Make of You" A- Episode 10, "We All Pay Eventually" A Best show on TV, and even with all the great TV that is to come, I don't know if anything can top it. After finally ridding itself of the weakest aspect the past two seasons in last years finale, Banshee was able to to move forward and they did so with full confidence, and confidence they certainly earned. Everything they wanted to do, they did and pulled it off near perfectly. Even the one major thing I disagree with this season, they handled the fallout so well. The action on this show has always been great, and it went up a notch this year. The best part though, the character and emotional depth was able to rise to the same level. This is a pulp series through and through, but it gives the characters depth that one would expect more from a prestige drama, and Banshee succeeds. I can't wait for season four, Banshee has truly become one of the top shows overall on TV, and it has been a great ride seeing it evolve the way it has. It certainly helps that it brought in David Harbour as the big bad for next season(presumably), and he was one of my favorite things about Manhattan(my best show of 2014). It is just such fun that this show became this good, one would never expect it when it first premiered. It doesn't really have that big of a budget either, and it is on a channel still trying to gain some recognition. It won't get Emmy's outside of the technical categories either. I love it. Season grade: A. It did bat the majority of episodes at an A-, but as a whole it is a fine tuned machine, and one of the best TV seasons I've ever seen.

Favorite Episode: Episode 6 Runner Up: Episode 7 Least Favorite Episode: Episode 2 I agree on pretty much all your points regarding episode 8. I'm thrilled we didn't have to go through any Law and Order-style procedural dullness, but yeah, for an ending that was "planned" it certainly felt like a rushed last episode. I'm not sure the time jumps were wholly necessary, and the return to tonal unease wasn't exactly welcome, but it landed enough emotional beats to satisfy. It was a mess, but it was an occasionally beautiful mess, and I really respect it for what it tried to do, and the gorgeous, haunting, horrifying sixth episode made it all worth it in the end. I'd probably give the series a solid B. Infuriatingly, I'm still not caught up on Banana. Gotta knock out those last two eps so I can definitively say it's my favorite show of the year come January (barring a miraculous season of anything else I decide to watch).

Sort of idly drifting through Low Winter Sun and following along with the AVC reviews and comments just out of curiosity. Already weird to find my local online world and "ours" colliding as a prolific local commenter left a long post about Detroit in the comments to Episode 2. Probably what's keeping me going through the show, to be honest (apparently part of the finale takes place in Ann Arbor), though Mark Strong and Lennie James really deserve a better show in which to showcase their talents. The first stretch of dialogue in the pilot almost got me to stop watching right there and then. Grimly amused to find that so many characters share the same suspicious view of "Chaldeans" as my friend from Livingston County when we drove through Bloomfield Hills.*
Bingewatched the first few episodes of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Reserving judgment so far--as it feels like I need to see more--except on how ludicrously cute Ellie Kemper is.
*Yeah, someone put it perfectly: "This is the best new show of 2002."

You said Banana might be better, would it be better to just watch that instead? Banana is by and far the better of the two. It's one of the best series I've seen so far in 2015, currently tied with The Americans for the #1 spot. It's an anthology series, so while it does help to see the preceding episode of Cucumber, it's not a necessity. A friend just watched Banana, and he really loved it. Definitely give ita watch. Cucumber is a mess. An occasionally beautiful and haunting show, but still a mess. Episodes 2 and 3 are my choices for the weakest of the bunch. However, episode six is incredible. It's the most standalone, and while it packs more of an emotional punch if you have see the preceding 5 episodes, you can still watch it on its own. It's some of the best TV I've seen in a very long time.
