Pretty much all the music. I'm amenable to indie rock, synth pop, really anything, but those aren't the places I dive deep. I'm a tourist. I'll listen to the single, dig it, and move on. That's actually continued here on TI. SLOW's New Wave thread has almost eclipsed the 18-month old LOUD thread in less than 2 weeks. Like, what the fuck?! Do people really still care about Tears for Fears that much?
(I know a lot going on there is nostalgia. I'm not actually mad.)
Oh how I miss the Metal Box and Loud columns.

Also, I have regularly run into trouble at the AV Club for my belief that Jesus is distinct from and subordinate to God the Father. Are we talking homoousios or homoiousios? WHY ISN'T THERE A HETEROOUSIAN PRIDE MARCH!? ! ? !

There seems to be an anti-YA sentiment among the AVC commentariat often, so:
People who look down on those who read and enjoy young adult novels are stuffy jerks who don't know how to have fun. Plus, generally speaking, discounting an entire genre because all you know about it is "lol, one book amoung thousands had sparkly vampires" (or any other reason) makes you a moron.

The only character on Sopranos I liked was Tony's mom. When she died I stopped watching.

I'm sure the "new parent" excuse gets old, but rather than disconnecting over specific pieces of media, my biggest challenge with TOC lately is my inability to keep up at all. Five years ago when I started commenting on AVC, I was a big consumer of pop culture and found a kinship in the movie, TV and general interests of the community, even if I've always been more of a lurker than commenter.
With an 18-month old running around, every night boils down to, "We have 60-90 minutes to watch/play/do something. What do you want to do?" Sometimes that's a big topic show that we like (Better Call Saul, Parks & Rec), sometimes it's fluff (Castle, Marvel's Agents of Shield), and often it's super-fluff (The Soup, Tosh.0). And seeing a movie? Both in theaters and at home I've watched maybe 10 movies in the last two years.
When I think about it, if I feel myself drifting from TOC, it's less about those things I disagree with, and more about not having time to have an opinion at all and feeling a bit jaded over that fact.

I'm fine with this going full-on unpopular opinions thread on any subject. I am 100% fine with that, as long as we don't have anyone (no matter how well-liked) calling anyone else an asshole for any opinion they might express. Shut up you stupid butthead

I'm all for "reboots". At least it encourages creators to look at things from a different direction. Things not based on established media don't require that sort of reflection.

1. I honestly do not give a shit about what Weird Al Yankovic does these days. Also, I must have missed the memo that declared Weird Al to be a comedy god and living legend. I wish the man no ill will, but I thought it was universally agreed upon that once you went through puberty, Weird Al was no longer needed.
2. I absolutely love "Blurred Lines" as a fun dance song and see absolutely nothing wrong with the lyrics.
3. I don't have a problem with Iggy Azalea as an artist, even liking one of her songs (Change Your Life). Whatever problems she has as a person and an artist, I do not find her rap style to be a racist form of cultural appropriation.
4. It is not a travesty when a multi-million dollar movie, based on a billion dollar toy line, which generates millions of dollars in merchandise, receives rave reviews, and is a box office powerhouse, does not get nominated for an award.
5. I'm all for discussion on serious topics. From time to time, this can be quite rewarding, even within the realm of a website devoted to pop culture. Even if someone disagrees with someone on an issue, at the very least, you here from multiple individuals their own beliefs, which can be both entertaining and insightful. Further, you can better develop your own views and beliefs through interaction with other people. But let's not pretend that titling an article THE RAPE OF THRONES is anything other than a blatant clickbait designed to rile people up. Surprise, everybody's pissed, everybody's emotional, and no one learns anything. Thanks for being as shitty as Buzzfeed AV Club.

I actually sometimes wonder what drew me to AVC in the first place, since I rarely see movies (and never in the theater), watch almost no culturally-pertinent current television, and can't be bothered with their music coverage. It was the longer-form features, mostly by Rabin, that got me hooked, and then the commentariat. But since the Dissolve dissolve I've found less and less content at TOC to keep me engaged. Which is, of course, my fault and not theirs, because what do I expect from a website that focuses on pop culture that I'm willingly not consuming?

I have some friends that are into Dawes, and I have come over to one persons house on multiple occasions to be greeted by the dulcet tones spinning on vinyl. I...I don't know how to tell them without seeming insane. Also when it comes to Weird Al, I'm completely in the MLA/Rainbowsherbert camp regarding his music. My working theory of his goodwill starts with the fact that he is an almost preternaturally kind and gregarious person, and that everyone in the comedy or music world that has worked with him LOVES him. His occasional appearances on podcasts I listen to bear this out. I can only guess that appreciation just kinda filtered its way into pop culture at large? Or at least the AVC version of pop culture at large.

Holy shit where do I start? I basically do not partake in any form of media whatsoever, so I really have no idea why I hang around the AV Club, beyond using it as the Crib Notes for pop-culture information.
TV:
- I have seen 2 episodes of Community, both of which I enjoyed. I have never seen any episodes of Parks & Recreation, or 30 Rock. The last sitcom I've watched the majority of was Arrested Development, and reading the show synopses, it seems I missed most of Season 3.
- I have never seen more than a couple episodes of any HBO or other premium cable show. This includes Mad Men, Breaking Bad, The Wire, Sopranos, Deadwood, Oz, and Game of Thrones (and yet I'll comment on the GoT sections regularly pretending I know what's going on).
- Two of my favourite shows of all time are Venture Bros and Futurama. I have only seen up to Season 2 of Venture Bros (own Season 3 on DVD but have not opened it), and have not watched any of the reboot of Futurama
- The last show I watched more than a handful of episodes of was probably CSI which I would watch only because my roommate liked it and sometimes I just wanted to hang out. My roommate moved away 7 years ago.
- I still watch TV from time to time, and I used to just watch whatevee was on Home and Garden, but we don't get that channel anymore, so now I watch Family Feud which seems to be on all the time.
- I should note I have been trying to watch Adventure Time when it comes up on my cable's On Demand
Movies: - I haven't been to a movie theatre in over 4 years
- The only movies I watch in a given year seem to be either Superhero movies, or other major blockbuster franchises which I'll pick up through On Demand every once in awhile (the only movies from 2013 that I watched in 2013 were Pacific Rim and the World's End)
- Name any classic movie, and there is a 100% chance I haven't seen it unless it is Sci-Fi (eg: Godfather, Gone with the Wind, Citizen Cane, basically anything truthfully).
Music: - I don't know anything from any band released in the last 10 years or so (The last album I purchased was Silversun Pickups Carnavas only because I really liked Lazy Eye, and I hadn't bought anything before that for a couple years)
Books: - I don't read anything that isn't Science Fiction or Fantasy
- The only actual literature I've read was required reading in High School
- I have never read a non-fiction book. This includes text books.
Wow, when did I turn into my dad?

I mean, I knew some of his songs already, like "White and Nerdy" and "Fat", two or three of those really famous ones. The podcasts sort of inspired me to go back and listen to less-famous stuff which made me like him even more. (To this day, I cringe when I hear coworkers say "He's the guy who did 'Fat'!" because my Weird Al tastes are annoyingly hipster, or something.) Speaking of unpopular opinions: Comedy Bang! Bang! the podcast is usually good-to-great, but I think Scott Aukerman is just bizarre, and I don't like the TV show at all. In fact, I hate the TV show.

Or at least the AVC version of pop culture at large. It's also the fact that almost without fail he's many of today's comedian's first introduction to a Comedy album. I think the fact that they grow up, get to meet the guy that was their god at age 10 and holy crap he's a really nice guy who might even say yes to working on a project with them. He's inspired a lot of funny people and yes in that way I do think he's a comedy god. That said I'm also well past the age where I need to hear one of his song parodies more than once (if it's a good one) or at all. Speaking of heresies for a Canadian: I sort of enjoy Weird Al the way I enjoy Rush, based on how many musicians I love who cite them as their major/only early influence I am thankful for Rush, but I am really ok with never hearing Tom Sawyer or YYZ ever again.

Oh yay, the Unpopular Opinion Thread is back. I don't think I'll ever understand why just about everyone enjoys voicing unpopular opinions, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying voicing my unpopular opinions.
I'm with everyone who voiced confusion at the cult of Weird Al. He seems like a lovely guy, and he's obviously talented, but to call his parodies obvious would be an understatement and I'm not sure why we're supposed to consider him a comic genius and/or deity.
I didn't really like It Follows. It didn't scare me in the least, and my boyfriend and I both agreed that it felt more like a successful student film than an actual feature. It also had one of my least favorite tropes, where one character is reading a book (usually in public domain) and quotes long passages from it in a way that's supposed to comment on the film itself in a way that just...ugh, leave Dostoevsky out of this, okay It Follows?
This opinion isn't unpopular, but since a few opinions have touched on this: I don't understand people who don't like The Beatles or Star Wars, at least on some level. I try to be an accepting and understanding person, but...I just don't get it.

As long as we're going hard, though: I don't like Paul F. Tompkins. At all. I think he's smug, over-proud and annoying. I don't hate everything he's ever done, but I don't get excited when Paul F. Tompkins is the guest on anything. In character or not. Sigh. Ya know, for my first couple years of Comedy Bang! Bang!ing, I maintained the illusion that Paul F. Tompkins was an adorable peach of a man who, someday, would end up being my best friend. We'd laugh and frolic and go hat-shopping together. But over the last few months, I've come to realize you're right. I'm not sure what tipped me off first: the unstandable solo monologues in the Pod F. Tompkast and his new show Spontaneanation, the weird way all his stand-up wound up disappointing me, or maybe the more general "creep" of his character improv towards hijacking shows rather than being an amiable part of the fabric. But you're right. Dude's ego is getting plump. When a random normal non-comedian normal person went on CBB recently (Michael Ableson), he noticeably tweeted compliments about meeting everyone except PFT, whose manner was described as "polite tolerance." I do still like most of his characters and his character appearances. His English-major-wordplay shtick happens to align with my own English-major sense of humor. But my "love" has definitely been dialed back to "mostly like".
