Any ongoing comic you regularly read online is fair game, even if it also sees actual print publication (that still exists?).
1. SMBC 2. Dinosaur Comics 3. Oglaf 4. Darths & Droids 5. Wondermark 6. Tom the Dancing Bug 7. Maakies 8. XKCD: What If? 9. Ted Rall (I like to keep tabs on the fringiest left-wing thing that is still publishable) 10. Too Much Coffee Man (a long-runner and great when the site actually updates) 11. Girls With Slingshots (concluded, but now in victory lap colorization) 12. Spinnerette 13. This Modern World (I like the art but the content has gotten boring more often than not) 14. XKCD (why, anymore? at least the "What If?" subcomic is actually interesting) 15. Questionable Content (sigh) 16. The K Chronicles (Keith Knight just doesn't have much interesting that I haven't seen elsewhere) 17. PHD Comics (UGH, just end it)

Comics I currently read are hard to rank, because they are vastly different styles. I guess I'd rank them by genre:
Slice of life 1.) Something Positive (I've met Randy at cons. He's so great!) 2.) Chaos Life 3.) Lunarbaboon 4.) Questionable Content (yeah, I know, robots. But like...it's mostly just people living, so.) 5.) Boumeries
Sci Fi/Fantasy 1.) Gunnerkrigg Court 2.) Sluggy Freelance 3.) Finding ChaoS 4.) Plume 5.) Trying Human 6.) Thistil Mistil Kistil 7.) El Goonish Shive (though I'm not sure why I still read it)
Pure Silliness 1.) Hark, A Vagrant 2.) Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal 3.) Oglaf 4.) XKCD 5.) Penny Arcade

the fact that every person so far has listed "XKCD" and i'm the only one to list Achewood is making me reconsider this whole website

1. Octopus Pie 2. Achewood 3. Hark! A Vagrant 3. Girls With Slingshots 4. Multiplex 5. Dumbing of Age 6. Nimona 7. Dinosaur Comics 8. Theater Hopper
I used to be a massive Questionable Content fan, and I still read it every day, but I've long ago lost interest.
In my teens I read a lot of Penny Arcade, PvP, VGCats, and Sinfest, but I haven't kept up with any of those in years and feel no real attachment.

It's a pair of screaming Lion King slippers from Don Hertzfeldt's amazing It's Such a Beautiful Day, specifically from the first part of the film, " Everything Will Be OK", which Hertzfeldt has uploaded to Youtube.

Sinfest used to be my favorite, but I haven't read it in a while. I'm going to go ahead and say it's still my favorite, though, because Fuschia and Criminy was a pretty solid storyline. I haven't kept up with many webcomics since my RSS feeder died. I used to read QC, Penny Arcade, XKCD and Candi (a slice-of-life art school students thing, with sentient squirrels and other weirdness) regularly, though. And I should read Girl Genius, because the Foglios are just all around awesome.

the fact that every person so far has listed "XKCD" and i'm the only one to list Achewood is making me reconsider this whole website I used to like Achewood, but when it got to the wedding I just had to walk away. In my teens I read a lot of ... VGCats That's ok, I'm sure it'll take you less than ten minutes to catch up. [that's a joke about him not updating]
Ok my list is 1. Gunnerkrigg Court; and I think what really to me is that it's a slow burning story, but it's consistent and doesn't really feel the need to just blow things up like a summer blockbuster. 2. Hark! A Vagrant; has taught me more about history and literature, especially Canadian, than any of my classes. 3. Oglaf; NSFW 18+ can't stress that enough 4. Awkward Zombie; really, the only viddiya game comic worth reading. 5. Wonderella; I think this is the only superhero parody comic that's still running. 6. Manly Guys Doing Manly Things; usually putting OCs together with game and other pop culture characters is a recipe for narm and disaster, but Kelly makes it work. 7. Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal; because SCIENCE 8. XKCD; I guess, like it's only ok when there's stick figures, when it's some kind of chart I'll just skip over it. 9. The editorial comic in The Onion. And I have to agree with Roy Batty's Pet Dove, ever since google killed Reader I haven't kept up much.

It's more amusing in tone than XKCD itself ever was and has more interesting illustrations. Each individual sketch gets its own mouseover text, so it's like ten comics in one.

I've tried order of the stick at least three times in my life, and never could get into it. Probably because I've never done paper and pencil rpgs.

I still hate-read XKCD and Questionable Content for some reason, but the only active webcomics I actually enjoy these days are Perry Bible Fellowship, Mr. Lovenstein and the random Fart Party strip whenever Julia randomly decides to post a new one.

The only web comic I still read regularly is Penny Arcade.
I've read and loved many over the years. But I dunno. Fell out of the habit. I already know many of the above listed, but maybe I'll go check some of these others out sometime.

Perry Bible Fellowship - The Airplane! of comedic webcomics The Oatmeal - XKCD without the smugness Wifemate is a big fan of The Oatmeal, though personally I get too much of a "I F***ing Love Science" vibe from it. The creator has started hosting marathons now, and as Wifemate is also a runner, we attended the "Beat the Blerch" race in New Jersey last year. Because Wifemate had also read the "about" section, she spotted the man himself milling around before the race completely anonymous in the crowd and got a picture with him.

I've been really bad about keeping up with things I used to follow more obsessively but of things that still update...
-Perry Bible Fellowship -Oglaf -SMBC -The Oatmeal -Strong Female Protagonist (need to catch up actually) -Wondermark -Hark a Vagrant -Sheldon -I usually catch up on XKCD out of habit once a month or so. Not as big a fan of the strip anymore but really enjoyed the What if? book. -Stuff I'm probably forgetting.
I've been really bad about letting long running story comics just fester for a while then forget their names/bookmarks and rediscover them years later. So there are probably about 5 of those out there at the moment.
Used to read: Penny Arcade - used to never miss it but their increasingly massive empire and the coverage of their employment practices a few years back really soured me on them, stopped reading and didn't really miss it. PvP Questionable Content Various other comics of middling amusement value that were easy to keep up on while an underemployed part time student.

Not great on lists, but everybody should read Terror Island It's old as fuck by internet measures and long concluded but I just love the epic tale of who's going to buy groceries. And friendship.

I only read XKCD, Existential Comics, Hark a Vagrant and Dinosaur Comics. Not out of any great desire, more out of inertia. But I don't get the hate for XKCD - it's occasionally funny.
And I use Feedly as my google reader replacement. Works great.
