Temperatures for this week (forecast) Today: 99 Thursday: 88 Friday: 82 Saturday: 85 Sunday: 69 Monday: 76 Hello? Make up your damn mind! Seriously! April truly is the cruelest month. We had a low two nights ago in the very low 20's. Last night the low was in the very high 40's. And we'll be back to the low 20's again on Saturday night. I can't wait for it to finally pick one and stick with it.

Well, it's raining like hell today. My head feels like someone stuffed a bunch of cotton in every available nook and cranny, like the world's shittiest Thomas's English muffin.
Tomorrow is going to be 54/33 and partly cloudy; Saturday is going to be 47/27 with wintry mix (for god's sake); Sunday is going to be sunny and 48/38; then it's going to be shitty and rainy and around 60 from Monday-Wednesday. Lousy Smapril weather.

I might be an idiot?
Yesterday the temp wasn't SO bad (around 50), so I left work wishing I'd worn a hoodie instead of my winter coat. So today I wore the hoodie. It was just snowing outside.

We're looking down the barrel of another wintry weekend, with snow tomorrow and lows in the mid-20s on Saturday night. BUT! This morning I saw my first red-winged blackbird of 2016, so that's a sign that things might be heading in the right direction eventually.

It's a very blustery day today. Sun is shining, sky is blue, but, man, that wind is something.

Our snow event this weekend turned into a chilly rain event instead. And yes, it was freezing overnight into Sunday, but now? Now it's all low 60s this week, and 74-76 next Sunday and Monday, per Weather Underground. We took the Christmas lights out of the peach tree! We're hardening off our onion seedlings to transplant into the garden! I planted baby fruit trees yesterday, getting dirt on my hands in the bright sunshine! And last night we started into our summer "DVDs of the entire run of a crappy procedural that ran for many seasons" viewing, queuing up "The Mentalist" for the first time. It is definitely feeling like a new season at stately Dick n Hisses Manor!!

Hello again, spring. Are you here to stay this time? Mid-60s today, 70s this weekend, should be glorious. The windows are open and the birds are chirping.

I have absolutely had it with the weather here. HAD IT. It has been in the low 50's and rainy all week, and will remain so through the weekend. It feels like November. It's exhausting, draining weather; it's so hard to get going in the mornings, and it seems like there's no way to get warm, with this damp, pervasive, gloomy chill. Obviously, it would be great if we could have some sunny, warm weather, but at this point I'll take one or the other. Sunny and chilly? Sure, it's an improvement. Rainy and warmer? Also fine. But please, no more of this until November's actually here.

(The other day when I looked at the weather on my phone, all seven days had the little thunderstorm icon.)

We were down in the DC area this weekend, and it was so surprising how much greener it is there than here. I mean, I recognize that they tend to have spring a teensy bit earlier than we do, and slightly milder winters, but not by a ton. I mean, for the most part we have very similar weather. But on the drive back it was sort of crazy how it was fully lush and green and leafy from DC up to Baltimore... and suddenly it was only somewhat leafed-out, with all the light shades of new green rather than the summery colors from 20 minutes back down the road.
Anyway, the sun finally came out this weekend, after a week without. It was glorious.

We just had a ridiculously cool May. I think there were only 3 days over 100. Astonishing.
Apparently Mother Nature has realized her error. Calendar flips to June tomorrow, and guess what is happening?
June 1 - 104 June 2 - 109 June 3 - 115 June 4 - 117 June 5 - 117 June 6 - 111
Seriously? Come on, that's just silly. My new co-worker is from northern New Mexico. She just moved here last week. I said to her today, "So, are you ready for 110+?" I think she thought I was joking.

It's baby bird season here, and an idiot robin chose one of the hanging flower pots by our driveway/garage for its nest. We're now pinned down, trying not to disrupt the nest too much with our comings and goings, because we feel all bad for the hideous, repulsive little babies that hatched in there. This spot is something of a high-traffic location, and it's been a pain in the ass having them there. Internet research has informed us that baby robins aren't cute like baby chickens or ducks because they hatch much younger. They're like gross, grey little embryos when they hatch. ::shudder:: They also can keep themselves warm all huddled up with their siblings in the nest within a day of hatching, so contrary to our concern that they'd been abandoned, they're actually fine left alone. The mother moves on to lay another nest (they can do up to three clutches a summer! LIKE WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH ROBINS ALREADY), and keeps an eye on these babies from a safe distance. I guess they get fed gazillions of times a day, though, and I've interrupted the process more than once. Per the interwebs, a baby robin will be fed up to 14 feet of chewed-up earthworm before they leave the nest. And leaving the nest happens within two weeks of hatching, so we've theoretically got one more day before these little monsters move on. I can't wait, because I'd really like to use the barbecue, and the pot they're in is right over our grilling spot.

Our long national nightmare is over -- yesterday two of the three baby robins took the big leap and hit the road, and at some point this morning the last one decided he was too lonely to Buster Bluth it for the rest of his life in that nest. We can have our garage back!

Endless rain. Even I'm tired of it now. Of course, once it does end, it is going to be miserably hot and humid as the city dries out.

Here in Maryland, we've basically gone from an extended March right into summer. There's nothing like watching the ancient gum trees in your yard swaying dangerously thanks to the high winds brought by a massive thunderstorm. Underneath which your new car is parked. We didn't sustain any damage, but holy shit that thunderstorm was crazy last night. I haven't seen it rain that ferociously in a long time - within 10 minutes of it starting, mud was sliding down our driveway into the ditch.

We didn't sustain any damage, but holy shit that thunderstorm was crazy last night. I haven't seen it rain that ferociously in a long time - within 10 minutes of it starting, mud was sliding down our driveway into the ditch. Ugh, I hate severe thunderstorms. I loved them so much when I was a kid, but as soon as I was old enough to understand the concept of property damage, that was it for me. That said, our tree guy assures me that gum trees are nearly impossible to wreck. They take a licking and keep on ticking. So maybe your car has chosen just the right ancient trees to be parked under? Our yard had four notable giant deciduous trees in it when we moved in 10 years ago. The black locust was the first to go, getting struck by lightning. The oak just slowly succumbed to whatever it is that's taking out oak trees, and we had to cut it down. The maple got ripped in half by a freak October snowstorm, and is now a shadow of its former self. The gum, though? Soldiers on! I remember during Hurricane Sandy being all hunkered down in the living room and hearing this knocking at the ceiling with each big gust. The next day our across-the-street neighbor reported that she spent the storm watching our gum tree, absolutely agog at how it was bent nearly in half, banging on the roof there, but not a single branch broke off. I hope that doesn't mean that it's just been softened up for the next big storm, though.

Here in Jersey, like in Maryland, the extended misery of March-like weather did, indeed, give way straight to summer. I wouldn't have minded having a spring, but whatever -- I'm just glad it's not cold anymore. Of course, it's easy to be happy with the weather right now, because it's stunningly glorious out today. Like, life gives you only a handful of absolutely perfect days, and this? Is one of them. I can't wait to get back outside.

This has been a fantastic summer so far. My veggies could use a bit more rain, but it has been just HOT HOT HOT everyday. It's about time, we've had some weak-ass summers this past few years. This is making me pretty happy, weather wise.

It's incredibly hot and muggy around here. Unseasonably hot and muggy. We're into some August-level shit and I'm dying. We're supposed to get a cold front break later today through the weekend so yay for that.

We had a wet spring and now summer's been fairly dry, but we did get a thunderstorm last night, and I took Link out right after it ended - the sky was so weird, with dark clouds hovering in the east and sunlight bursting through from the west as it set. And there was a really lovely double rainbow.

A couple nights ago it was chilly enough for a sweater, and I started yearning hard for fall. This is always the time of year where I start getting my first tiny whiffs of autumnlonging. I live in a perpetual state of anticipating the next season -- I can't help it! Heh. But the second half of the calendar is all about each coming season being better than the last -- first it turns from early to high summer, then high summer to baby fall, then fall proper, then the holidays. It's the best! (The first half of the year? Can eat a bag of dicks.) After our eternal spring of cold misery we've had a hot summer that was tiptoeing into drought territory until the last couple of weeks. Finally, some rain! But I'm not complaining because my garden has been loving it. It's Pepper City, USA out on the front 40! Of course, I think the goofy cold spring messed up the tomatoes a bit, because they're being incredibly, maddeningly slow. So I'm all like, "Dude, high summer, if you don't get your corn and tomatoes going quicker, I'm going to check out and start yearning hard for fall soon." Of course, none of my seasonal anticipation is helped by the fact that I'm getting into full "time to work on Halloween needlepoint projects" mode. We change out all our hand-pieced decor with the seasons, and Hugs just finished a totally cracked-out quilt top from our stash of novelty Halloween prints, and now I've got the bug to be stitching in oranges and blacks and bats. For reference, here's Hugs's hilarious quilt top:

So hot. It's also not rained in several weeks. So after all the rains and flooding of spring, grass is browning, trees are wilting.

I had to go out today for my chiropractor's appointment and holy fucking hell, it was like having a wet, hot wool blanket thrown over my whole body the second I stepped out the door. It's 94 degrees here and we're not due for a thunderstorm until at least Saturday.
