It's too soon for a Spring Thread, and I want to share how delighted this morning made me, but it's not an irrational happiness at all, so hey, here's a "celebrate the seasons"/"bitch and moan about the shitty weather" non-seasonally-denominational place.
So! SPRING! You guys, it was ridiculously nice here this weekend, and while it's going back to less-nice in the next few days, it was 40 and brightly sunny this morning. Walking from my car to my office there was birdsong and the ground was damp from last night's rain, and my shoulders were actually warm from the sun shining on them. We've still got weeks to go before mile markers like "the first crocus!" and "the first daffodil!" and "I can probably take my puffer jacket to the dry cleaner now!", but just for this morning it was fantastic to have a nibble of spring.

We had a Saturday in the 60s, Sunday in the mid 50s, and a lovely today so far. I think we're supposed to get an inch or three of snow Wednesday-Thursday but meh, it's February. Days getting a little longer too! (sunset's at like 6:30ish tonight) I'm gonna be out wearin' my speedo and trottin' around in all those wacky running singlets I bought in no time!

I just had that thought this morning on my way to the train station - the air smelled like spring, in that it wasn't as icy as you might expect this time of the year, and everything had that good, earthy, fresh scent. Not to mention, even at 6:30 AM, it was already starting to get light outside and wasn't pitch dark. This weekend was warm for the season - highs of about 60, despite clouds/rain - and it's dropped back into the mid-40s, but the weather seems to have lost most of its bite. I'm not the world's biggest fan of spring because it plays havoc on my sinuses, but I always look forward to the warmer weather and new things growing in the ground and longer days.

...but the weather seems to have lost most of its bite. Exactly! I'm really trying not to get ahead of myself, but Hugs and I were just discussing last week that it feels like the end of winter's in the air. Not necessarily the beginning of spring, but you can totally feel that winter's close is coming.

And it's so nice to leave work with a little bit of sunlight left, rather than wake up and come home in the dark every day. I don't have Seasonal Affective Disorder, but my mood is definitely better overall when the days are longer.

I haven't needed headlights to drive home from work in, like, two weeks! My mother doesn't have to turn on the outside lights before I get home either! (Now's when I desperately try not to turn this into my bi-annual railing about the stupid expanded Daylight Savings bullshit. It's already light out after work! We don't need to give an hour to the evenings yet at the expense of the mornings! Why can't we wait and do it at the same time as most everyone else in the world?? ::SOBS:: )

OK, what I am about to say is going to sound really obnoxious and humblebraggy to you northerners. I know. I KNOW. But winter here in Houston sucked. It was 83 on Christmas day. It's been 80 the past two weeks. Trees started budding and flowering a month ago. I want my winter! No, I don't want 18 inches of snow, and shovelling my walkway, and all that. But I do want a nice nip in the air before The Onslaught begins in another month. It sucks to go from heater to AC in 24 hours with no in between. I'm really worried about what this means for spring/summer if winter was this warm and dry.

Surf season is slowly transitioning to dive season. It's been a long surf season, and I made the most of it.
I still suck at surfing. Like, really suck.

We had more winter here this year than last year. Which wasn't hard because last year there was no winter at all. This year we had at least 2-3 weeks!
I AM disappointed that El Nino didn't drop as much rain as we had been promised. But, I'm not disappointed about the warm weather. I hate the cold.
Oh, actually, I would like to complain about the 91 degrees last Wednesday. That was a little ridiculous.

It was near 60 and wet all last week, this week we've got sun but today's high was 43. No signs of getting less bipolar weather any time soon.
The upside is that it doesn't get dark at 3 anymore, so there's that.

Check it out! We have a flower in our yard!! This is the earliest I think we've ever had a snowdrop bloom. Looking back at my pictures, the last couple of years with their polar vortexes had theirs in the second week of March, but in some of our warmer winters these guys normally start appearing about a week later than this one did. So maybe the crocuses will be equally aggressive? A girl can hope!

This was probably the lightest winter on record for the city, and definitely the mildest that I've experienced living here for 14 years. We basically had a 2-week cold snap in January where it got down to -20 C, but it's been above freezing during the day pretty much ever since. I think I had to shovel my sidewalk twice, and maybe once back in December.
But since it is still so early in the year, Spring isn't ready to start up yet, so we've had a weird sunny but brown proto-Spring for the past month or so.

In the 50s today (huzzah more outside running!). Tomorrow is thunderstorms with a couple of inches of rain possible transitioning to a couple inches of snow Thursday. Then, 60s on Sunday! Definitely edging toward spring.

If you want a no-snow metro that still gets weirdly cold, then move to Vegas. You'd think that it being "50" in December wouldn't feel cold, but there's an eternal howling zephyr that wind-chills to your bones.

Last Sunday it was 72 here. I was working outside in a t shirt and it was hot. Tonight I hauled in several loads of firewood for the blizzard they are predicting we may get tomorrow. It's a crapshoot, they say, depending on the storm track. We might get anything from nothing to 6+ inches of snow and 40-50 mph winds. And next Sunday it's supposed to be 65 degrees*. At this point, it might be nice if it just decided what season it wanted to be.
*all temperatures in Fahrenheit 'cause America, F*** Yeah!

Spring means allergies and being forced to do yard work. You suck, spring! Unseasonably warm weather and recent rain has accelerated the growth of my lawn. I swear non-mowing season gets shorter every year.

We had a really nice weekend, at least for late February, with sun and temps in the 50s and I'm so glad for a bit more sunlight each day.
But today we're due to get walloped with a winter storm and I'm really not looking forward to it.

We got our blizzard here. several inches of snow and very strong winds. Power has been off since last night. There is an electric pole and wires down in the road a couple of miles from the house. I have the generator running the sump pump , out DSL modem, and some lights, and I'm posting using my old laptop hooked up to a car battery. And it's supposed to be back up in the 60's in 2 or 3 days.

It was in the 60s here today, with heavy winds and rain, and now we're getting thunderstorms with a tornado watch. As someone who is terrified of extreme weather, I'm being reminded of my least favorite part of summertime -- trying not to give in to my inclination to panic while gluing myself to the little radar loops on weather websites, watching the blobs go by. February seems a bit early in the year for me to be in "tornado?!??!" terror mode.

The winter storm wasn't quite so bad in our area, thankfully - I Did leave work early and was glad for it, but the roads mostly were just wet, not slick or icy. We got maybe 2 inches of wet, thick snow on the grass, very little on sidewalks and roads.
Sounds like northern Indiana got totally creamed, though.

Okay, I know that this applies here: Despite it being February still, yesterday was that day. Oh my god, it was incredible yesterday -- low 60's, drenched with sunshine, and ruffled by warm breezes! Hugs and I took a 2 1/2-hour walk in capris, and were never cold! And on our way out of the house, look who we saw under the tiny cherry tree in the front yard: Last year's first crocus was on March 26. I like this year a lot better.

Spectacular day on Saturday: mid 70s. One of many problems with Houston weather is that it swings wildly between "too cold to be outside" to "too hot to be outside" with very few "It's so nice outside let's open all the windows in the house and turn off the AC/Heater for once" days in between. Saturday was definitely one of those days. Winter is pretty much done here, and now I don't mind so much.

While NJ doesn't have the heat extremes of Houston, we can have the same problem, where the warm weather brings too much humidity to be actually comfortable. Those perfect open-window days can be so rare and fleeting! Yesterday was a bit of a fake-out for us, that while we were out and walking around and in the sunshine, we were like, "When we get home let's open up the house!" Then we'd remember that it was only 62, and the house is not sunny. The best way to ruin the first lovely warm day of spring is to stupidly open the windows and then spend all day freezing.

Weird weather this weekend. Friday was a beautiful day, sunny and around 18 Deg C (Mid 60s F), so I took a bit of on extended lunch to enjoy a walk in T-Shirt weather.
Saturday started out beautiful, and was sunny and probably around 10 Deg C (50s F). At noon it started to snow like crazy. We must have gotten 3-4 inches in a couple of hours. Then it stopped, sun came out, and almost all of the snow melted by nightfall.
Sunday was another nice day in the mid-50s, and that melted whatever snow was remaining.
This morning. I don't know what to say. I must have rained sometime during the night, then the temperatures dropped fast. Woke up to -12 Degrees C (10 F), and a car that was encased in a thick layer of ice which I had to break through to open the door. The windshield was basically un-scrapable since the ice was so hard. So it looks like we're getting another shot at winter today, but it's supposed to come up above freezing tomorrow and will be sunny and cool for the rest of the week and back in to a pseudo-Spring.

Saturday and Sunday it was sunny, in 50s/60s, very pleasant. Sunday night it rained and got a bit chilly.
Yesterday was overcast and cool. Got sleet and freezing rain overnight.
Today, 24, with slushy snow and ice and very cold wind.
Next week, highs in the 50s and 60s.
Gotta love March in Chicago.
