Volcano Manor.
First assassination mission, okay. Second assassination mission, cool beans, this is easy. Third assassination mission, "Mountaintops of the what now?" Checks map. "Shit!"
Mt. Gelmir is the first area of the game that doesn't do anything for me aesthetically. I like its oppressive atmosphere, and I look forward to learning more about its lore (like why are soldiers ... eating (?) their dead comrades?), but it's not especially cool to look at. Not otherworldly like Caelid, not pretty like Altus Plateau.
Oh my god that fuckin' madness giant in front of Volcano Manor. Sonuvabitch!

Did you go past the Full Grown Fallingstar Beast to get there? I spent like an hour on that dude thinking he was like the Margit/Red Wolf of that area but apparently there's another way?

I attempted him a couple times, but they were hilariously one-sided encounters in his favor. I just ran past him. So I went through his arena, but did not finish him yet. I'm actually a lot stronger now, since I only encountered this dude in my "mad dash to find the Mt. Gelmir map fragment" session, and I've since then cleared Altus Plateau and what I could find of Mt. Gelmir before walking in Volcano Manor's front door.

Yeah the Fallingstar Beast up there is really tough, but you can just run right past him and ignore him until later. There's also apparently another way into the Manor that I never found until I saw someone find it on a stream. I think Mt Gelmir may not be the most interesting area overall, but the Manor itself is fun.

Volcano Manor and its boss completed. Great boss. I mean visually for sure, but also by far their best version of that concept to date.
I think I'm finally headed into the capital. Wish me luck.

Leyndell is so big and twisty and vertical and just confusing that I could not put together a proper head map of the place, so I kind of didn't even try. I mean I tried to explore a bunch, but by the time I circled back to a shortcut, it had taken so long that I didn't remember how I'd gotten there in the first place, or what paths even remained to see. I took out Godfrey and Morgott and didn't really look back. Just headed on to the Mountaintops of the Giants, where I am now, at the grace point outside Castle Sol and about to head in.
I think I've hit a point in Elden Ring where I still want to see everything but am starting to care way less about finding every item pickup. I pick stuff up that I cross or can easily see, but I'm not nook-and-cranny-ing it anymore. This also happens to me with Dark Souls 2, and funnily enough it also happens right after the capital in that game. I play the game really thoroughly until I get to the Shrine of Amana, and then it's like, "this place sucks and this game is long" and I kind of start running through it at that point.
I do really want to find Mogh though. I watched a lore video on him that was really interesting, and I love the look of Moghwyn Palace from a distance. One of their best vistas for sure (at least in video; I haven't found it in my own game).

Great video on Mogh, if a bit long.
No one has the followers that Vaati has, but there are lots of good creators in this space, and SmoughTown is one of the best, I say.

Yeah, Leyndell is probably my favorite area in the game but there's probably a point where big becomes too big. I thought I had covered pretty much everything eventually but apparently missed a huge area in the sewers that unlocks a secret ending. Good luck in Castle Sol. That's a wild ride.

I thought Leyndell was enjoyable as a classic Souls-style level but I didn't think it was some insurmountable labyrinthian megacity or anything. Mentally sectioning off the map into quadrants you explode individually always helps.

Castle Sol can fuck right off. Jesus Christ!
Regardless of the trouble I had navigating the place, I really didn't have any trouble with the enemies or bosses in Leyndell. With Castle Sol being the next big obvious place to go, I figured, "This won't be so bad. I'm probably where I need to be skill and/or level wise."
Haha, nope! All that frost damage, and those fucking two-wielders with their wombo-combos. Gracious. Hoping it's one of those areas where the level is more difficult than the boss.

A player named 'Let Me Solo Her", adorned in only a pot helmet, is answering summon requests for the Malenia fight, then beating her 1v1 for the host, often going hitless.
Even bows to the host at the end. King.

Meanwhile I found my way to the area below the sewers before Godfrey and Morgott, thinking that was the way to go.

I beat Elden Ring. Just a few minutes ago. I got the Ranni ending (age of the stars). I didn't mean to. I talked to the sign before the statue, but I didn't realize that would choose the ending.
I think that it is a profound accomplishment for the developers. That such a thing as this should exist is staggering.
It is my least favorite Souls game.

I want From Soft to remaster all of the Dark Souls game with the only difference being the addition of Elden Ring's guard counter. I played some Dark Souls 3 on Friday, and oh man the number of times I tried to guard counter. Such a useful and fun mechanic.
Yeah, I guess what I really want is an "old school" Dark Souls game that plays as well as Elden Ring, and I know I'm never going to get it.

beat malenia in (i'm guessing) around 2 hours over 2 sessions. got way more tilted against fuckface niall. currently bashing my head against the haligtree ulcerated tree spirit to finish off millicent's questline.
what's most important is that this is the final proof that the borderlands series is one of the worst of all time and actively rots your ability to play videogames

theory time.
a lot is made of the dual identities in ER (d and darian, radagon and marika, ranni and melina) but i think this might be a red herring, at least as far as the demigods go.
if we assume that melina is the third child of radagon and marika then i think melina, ranni and godwyn form a type of tryptych being, who are at the very least united by fate. same would then go for mohg, miquella and rykard (dynastic visionaries) and morgott, malenia and radahn (the swords behind their crowns).
what i'm getting at is that there is a third being connected to marika and radagon but whom?

A couple weekends back I had the house to myself for a couple days. My annual stag weekend. Thought I'd take the opportunity and play something I never have a chance to play anymore, because it's normally inconvenient to do so: Bloodborne. My favorite Souls game, and I haven't played it in years.
Turned it off after about 30 minutes. I hate to say it, but it feels unplayable to me now. It's just ... so ... slow. Everything feels sluggish and delayed. The 30fps definitely doesn't help when I'm used to steady 60+ on my PC.
It also didn't help discovering that on my only Dual Shock, the up and right d-pad triggers are dead. I hadn't played my PS4 in a couple years probably and don't know when this happened. Bloodborne has no option to modify controls, but it would still be playable without up and right d-pad, if annoying, but I couldn't get over my other hangups with the experience.
I'll continue pining for the remake/remaster that will never come, or if it does, only comes to a PS5 which I don't and may never have. Sigh.

Cemetery Shades have hideous spider crabs on their heads and it's very upsetting.
(btw, Zullie's videos are required viewing for any Souls fan. They're short, interesting, and highly bingeable. Do check out if you've missed them.)
