CHUBB IT UP I am honestly glad that Will Muschamp is landing on his feet. I hope we see more of the good Dak Prescott this season and less of the bad Dak Prescott. I will be in Disneyland for week 1. I wonder how much football I will watch this year? Or whether we will give in and temporarily add the ESPN package to our cable plan? Awesome. Have a Dole Whip for me. Are you going to visit Cars Land? No idea, I'll just be along for the ride.

So there are a few independents and Group of Five teams I should mention as well After a 7-1 start, Notre Dame fell a part, losing four out of their last five games. Quarterback Evertt Golson transferred to Florida State, leaving the sophomore Mark Zaire unopposed for the quarterback position. Wide out Will Fuller returns. He had 78 receptions for 1,094 yards and 15 touchdowns. Also returning is Tarean Folson who had 889 yards last season. The defense is returning many starters who were sidelined by injury last year. Last season, BYU quarterback Taysom Hill broke his leg in their fourth game, but he returns this year. Also returning is Jamaal Williams who had a late season knee injury. If they can both stay healthy, look to BYU to make a splash. Boise State returns 17 starters but they need to replace their quarterback and running backs. Look for Ryan Finley to fill the quarterback gap. Memphis has quarterback Paxton lynch, who threw for 3,031 yards last year. Running back Daoland Dorecus returns to the team, missing last season due to injury. The defense needs to replace eight starters. Marshall only lost one game last season. Quarterback Michael Birdsong transferred from James Madison and senior running back Devon Johnson returns, but they have key holes to fill on defense The season starts tomorrow, and there have been a few developments: A lot of teams have finally named their starting quarterbacks. Brandon Harris is going to start for LSU, Grayson Lambert for Georgia, Chad Kelly for Ole Miss. Florida is rotating both Harris and Grier (which tells me that neither of them are that good). Oregon is going to start Vernon Adams against his old team. Baylor is facing some questions about former defensive end Sam Ukwuachu, who was sentenced for six months in prison and a decade of probation for sexually assaulting another student. The question becomes: what did coach Art Briles and the university know and when did they know it? The victim has retained the same Title XII lawyer from the FSU incident, so you know that's going to end well. Perhaps learning from both Penn State and Florida State, Baylor has requested an independent investigation into the incident and stated they will cooperate freely with it. Oh and Illinois fired coach Tim Beckman for covering up injuries. What a guy. Well we know Hayden Fox is available.Β www.avclub.com/article/... Although most people think the first week are cupcake games, there are some good games to watch although most of them will look like this:Β youtu.be/BJNDjrX0GoQOhio State at Virginia Tech. Urban Meyers has said that the rest of the world will find out who the starting quarter back is when the first snap happens. Both quarterbacks might play. Wisconsin vs Alabama, played in Arlington, Texas for the "Cowboy Classic" in the House That Jerry's Ego built. Nick Saban is also playing his quarterbacks close to the vest, suggesting more than one will see action. Texas at Notre Dame Louisville vs Auburn in Atlanta for the "Chick-Fil-A 'this isn't gay at all' Kickoff Classic" Virginia at UCLA North Carolina vs South Carolina, played in Charlotte TCU at Minnesota Texas State at FSU and to no one's surprise Everett Golson is going to the starting QB And finally Michigan vs Utah, which will answer the question we've been asking all summer: What the hell is a Ute?

Well, you know the week 2 slate isn't great when Iowa State is somehow Fox's national game of the week. I mean, it's the Cy-Hawk game with Iowa which tends to be close games and is big within the state borders, but still, neither team is going to better than mediocre this year.

North Carolina vs. South Carolina, The season kicked off in Charlotte. It began with a great drive by UNC's Marquis Williams which ended in an interception in the end zone. And although he scored on their next drive on a 40 yard touchdown pass to Bug Howard, he threw three interceptions including one in the fourth quarter and essentially closed the door on the game. UNC was leading well into the fourth quarter until running back Shon Carson put the Gamecocks in the lead with a 48 yard Touchdown run. South Carolina won 17-13.
TCU @ Minnesota featured a much closer game. TCU was better able to capitalize on Minnesota's turnovers, even though they had the same number. Speaking of numbers, TCU's quarterback Treyone Boykin finished the game with 246 yards passing and 92 yards running. Compare that to 197 yards passing by Mitch Leidner of Minnesota. Minnesota tried to catch up to TCU with Leidner throwing a touchdown pass to KJ Maye with 1:32 left, but TCU recovered the onside kick to win the game 23-17.
And then there was Michigan @ Utah . I sometimes speak of broadcasters with a bias for SEC teams, but the broadcaster from Fox Sports 1 clearly had a hard-on for Jim Harbaugh's return, praising every little thing he did. Since he was one of the couple of couches who didn't reveal his starting quarterback, they made a big fanfare when Jake Rudcock, a transfer from Iowa, took the field... and subsequently threw an interception on his first drive. Rudcock had difficulty connecting with the long ball all night, but managing to connect with Jake Butt (this caused a stir within our household, with Belle yelling "His name is Jake Butt!" and the giggling every time he was mentioned, especially when he was described as one of the best tight ends in the country). A foolish personal foul penalty put the Wolverines in striking distance, and Rudock was also to hit Butt in the end zone (yeah, that's the gift that's going to keep on giving) and the commentators treated it like it was the Immaculate Reception. However Rudcock had more success throwing to the other team including a 56 yard pick six to Dustin Thomas. Utah quarterback Travis Wilson threw for 208 yards and ran for 53 yards and a touchdown, and running back Devonte Booker had seven catches for 55 yards and 69 yards rushing in Utah's 24-17 victory.
Baylor @ SMU. While the two teams went back and forth in the first half, SMU was shut out in the second half. Baylor quarterback Seth Russel threw for a whopping 376 yards and five touchdowns. 56-21
Arizona State @ Texas A&M played in Kyle Field which underwent a $486 million renovation, making it the largest stadium in the SEC. Kyle Allen threw for 198 yards and two touchdowns with one interception and Tra Carson ran for 96 yards. They were helped by a 79 yard punt return for a touchdown from Christian Kirk. Arizona State took advantage of an early fumble for a touchdown, quarterback Mike Bercovivi threw for 199 yards and Desmond Richard ran for 73 yards, but couldn't catch up to A&M. The Aggies won 38-17.
Alabama vs. Wisconsin, played in Arlington Texas for the "Cowboy Classic" in the House That Jerry's Ego built. Nick Saben started Jake Coker as quarterback and he threw for 213 yards and a touchdown. Running back Derrick Henry ran for 147 yards and three touchdowns. Wisconsin's quarterback Joel Stove threw for 228 yards, but Wisconsin's running game was flat. It's a tale of the numbers. Alabama's total yards: 502. Wisconsin's 268. The Tide rolled to a 35-17 victory.
Texas @ Notre Dame. It wasn't even funny. Mark Zaire threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns and C.J. Prosise ran for 98 yards, manhandling the Longhorns who only had 163 yards of offense to the Irish's 527. Notre Dame won 38-3.
Louisville vs. Auburn in Atlanta for the "Chick-Fil-A 'this isn't gay at all' Kickoff Classic." Lamar Jackson took over as quarterback in the second half replacing Reggie Boonfon, but it didn't help. Auburn's Jeremy Johnson threw for 137 yards and a touchdown but three interceptions. Louisville could not capitalize on the turnovers, and an inexplicable time out called in the waning minutes of the game, kept the ball in Auburn's hands, allowing them to win by a touchdown, 31-24.
Virginia @ UCLA. The game elicited another squeal from Belle. "Another tight end named Butts!" referring to Virginia's Evan Butts, and while UVA's quarterback Matt Johns threw for 238 yards, it was not enough to overcome UCLA's Josh Rosen's 341 yards and 3 touchdowns. UCLA won 34-16.
Texas State @ Florida State. After a lightning delay, the Noles took the field. The first half of the game was dominated by Dalvin Cook, as Florida State played very conservatively. Cook ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Texas State made a little noise when they recovered a fumbled punt which lead to a touchdown, but the second half belonged to quarterback Everett Golson, who had 302 yards and 4 touchdowns. The Noles won a rather civil game 59-16.
Penn State @ Temple. After scoring the first 10 points, Penn State decided not to show up for the rest of the game, allowing Christain Hackenburg to be sacked ten times. Temple beat Penn State for the first time since 1941, 27-10
Ohio State @ Virginia. Cardale Jones got the start for Ohio State, while Ezekiel Elliot ran 80 yards for a touchdown in their second possession, but he also fumbled a punt return which lead to a Virginia Tech touchdown before the end of the half, allowing the Hokies to lead at halftime. A collarbone injury to Hokie quarterback Michael Brewer changed the story as Ohio State dominated the second half, lead by former quarterback turned receiver Braxton Miller who had 78 yards receiving and 62 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The Buckeyes came back to win 42-24.
Elsewhere around the country, most of the top teams dominated their easy opponents. Michigan State beat Western Michigan 37-24; Georgia Tech beat Alcorn State 69-6; Clemson beat Woffard 49-10; Ole Miss beat Tennessee-Martin 76-3; and USC beat Arkansas State 55-6. There were a few closer ones: Oregon only beat East Washington 61-42, and Georgia's game was called off for weather in the fourth quarter with the Bulldogs up over Louisiana- Monroe 51-14 and Nick Chubb ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns. Boise St avoided an upset as Washington missed a potential tying field goal, winning 16-13.
Northwestern upsets Stanford 16-6. Stanford had two costly turnovers which lead to points. The most thrilling end to a game came as BYU's backup quarterback threw a Hail Mary to beat Nebraska 33-28. However starting quarterback Tayson Hill, who broke his leg last year, suffered a broken foot and is out for the season.
The AP poll was released yesterday and not much had changed. Ohio State kept the top spot. Alabama jumped TCU for #2, and Notre Dame leapfrogged both Georgia and Florida State to land at #9, pushing the Noles out of the top ten.
Next Week: USF @ FSU, Norte Dame @ Virginia, Hawaii @ Ohio State, Georgia @ Vanderbilt, Oklahoma @ Tennessee, Oregon @ Michigan State, Boise State @ BYU, Wake Forest at Syracuse, Memphis at Kansas, Kentucky at South Carolina, and LSU at Mississippi State

Yeah, sort of figured you would be a little down after the Cy-Hawk game. At least it was a decent game. Closer than the score because Iowa got a garbage late touchdown when the defense basically gave up in the last 3 minutes. We just couldn't get a damn thing going on offense in the 2nd half. Sam Richardson isn't a great QB by any means, but he's serviceable and he appears to have a good bunch of receivers to throw to. The problem is that we cannot run the ball at all, and once Iowa figured that out in the 2nd half, it was game-over. The defense is solid enough, although they've really struggled to keep QB's contained.
I don't know, like I said to Hawk this morning, after Toledo's big win on Saturday, Kansas is the only game left I feel that great about. Rhoads is going to have to pull a few upsets out of his ass now to keep his job, I think.

Texas has fired its widely reviled AD. That probably means that Charlie Strong's seat, which would likely have already been pretty warm this time next year with anything short of a 9-3 record and a top-tier bowl game, will now be red hot if the 'Horns underperform this year.

Texas has fired its widely reviled AD. That probably means that Charlie Strong's seat, which would likely have already been pretty warm this time next year with anything short of a 9-3 record and a top-tier bowl game, will now be red hot if the 'Horns underperform this year. There's a local radio host up here in Des Moines who also runs a website covering ISU, so pretty in-tune with Big 12 happenings, that is dead convinced that Saban will be coaching at Texas either next year or the year after. Supposedly he was pretty interested last time around but it wasn't a great time to move his family (what age are Saban's kids, I wonder) and I guess if you look at the way Strong's contract is structured it's apparent they wanted to be able to easily fire him after year 2. I'm sure everyone would have been happy if Strong had come in and really turned things around, but the conspiracy theory that he was brought in mostly to be a disciplinarian and clean house for two years so Saban could have a clean slate when he was ready to make a switch kind of makes sense.
