College Football Thread (that's right, I'm posting it in two different websites. Let's see which works best!)
I'm kind of glad Miami beat UNC because I want Miami to be highly ranked when we beat them, but it's SO HARD for me to root for Miami. Plus UNC has such a pretty campus and they have a Ram as their mascot- with blue horns! How can you not love that?
Wow. A lot of high ranked teams got their asses handed to them this week. Louisville lost, LSU lost, Texas A&M lost, UCLA lost, South Carolina lost, Florida lost, Georgia lost.
And now. The big game. I expected it to be close. I expected it to go down to the fourth quarter. I didn't expect Florida State to kick the ever-loving shit out of Clemson. And now we are ranked #2 by the smallest of margins. I think we can contend for the National Championship. I really do.
(Belle hid in the other room in the belief that if she doesn't watch the game, then we will win. I'm thinking of locking her in the closet until January 7th.)
NCAA finally ruled on Miami... and it pretty much was a slap on the wrist. I'm sure the self-imposed sanctions the last two years had a lot to do with that.
Next week... Well as we've seen anything can happen and we're only halfway there!
FSU has to keep on the gas pedal. NC State has spoiled our season too many damn times, and we need to make sure it doesn't happen this year. I'll be watching on my phone because we're going to Disney this weekend.
I would love to see UCLA beat Oregon to give us a little breathing room. My Penn State is playing Ohio State and I don't see us winning that game
Stanford/Orgegon St, Clemson/Maryland, Texas Tech/Oklahoma and South Carolina/Missouri all look like great games to watch

My enthusiasm for finally having a tailgate-able home Iowa State game this weekend has been pretty dampened by Baylor eating our soul last week. Oh well, it will still be fun to see my old college buddies.

As a K-State fan, this season has been incredibly frustrating. Oklahoma State and Baylor were winnable games, but K-State fucked it up both times. Here's hoping for a win against West Virginia.

Outside of Baylor (and Tech I guess, although I think they're due for a rough stretch) is anyone in the conference having a good season? The entire Big 12 is just rough this year.

The emergence of the Pac-12 with Oregon and Stanford leading the way has really hurt us I think. And obviously the perception of the conference is unfortunately tied to Texas and OU to a lesser extent, so their struggles have been a problem. The conference has had some bad breaks though. If Colt McCoy hadn't gotten hurt in the '09 title game I think Texas would have had a decent chance at breaking the SEC's streak that year. Likewise, if Okie State hadn't gotten screwed out of a national title game in favor of Bama and the all-SEC snorefest in 2011 they would have had a decent shot. If either of those things roll different, I think the perception of the conference is MUCH different.

Yeah, I was really hoping they would go that year. That would have been fun. I feel that if you don't win your conference, you can't go to the National Championship

Last week people were going for smoke breaks on third down.

As a Texas A&M alum and fan, I would like to report that I am not a happy camper (BTW, I am Cypher Raige over on the AV Club, but that's a shitty name). This past weekend, I broke my 12 year streak of not going to a Texas A&M game, and I headed over to College Station to watch A&M play Auburn. So clearly I am bad luck. Either that, or I should not have taken my UT alum wife with me. She's more likely the bad luck charm.
The game was actually a very good game, but good god did our defense look terrible (just like every other defense in the SEC this year, it seems)! We could not stop Auburn's run game, and we could not stop their pass game, and we could not do anything but basically look like crap on the defensive side of the ball. Offense was better, but Johnny Manziel had an off game. He threw two INTs, had a shoulder injury that probably caused us to settle for a field goal, and he generally did not scramble and run with the confidence that he showed last year. This is two games in a row in which he has been injured (shoulder this weekend and knee the weekend before), and I am wondering if he is letting that get into his head. I'm sure the last thing he wants is a career-ending injury before he gets a chance to go into the NFL, but I think it has affected his game, and that's a bummer to watch as a fan. However, he did throw four touchdown passes to Mike Evans, and Evans is an absolute beast.
So yeah, I picked a bad game for my first return to Kyle Field since 2001. But whatever, I still think we have a chance to win out, although LSU and Missouri will likely be crazy games.
P.S. WTF, Missouri?! They kinda came out of nowhere this year!
EDIT: And of course I forgot to weigh in on the questionable no-call on the Manziel horsecollar tackle on the second to last play of the game. I have watched replays, and I still think it was a horsecollar, but there are other people that disagree with me. If we had gotten that call, I am doubtless that we would have scored and won the game. But that's how it goes, I guess. Stupid refs!

Well since people are going to be leaving work on the East Coast soon, the TI usually settles down about this time, so I'm going to wrap this up with a few more comments
mncyguy- have fun at your tailgate
Double hawk- I think they can still pull a decent bowl game, but I agree- it's gotta be frustrating
Scott Baio- as much as I want to see teams get upset, I hate it when it's because of an injury. I'm not Manziel's biggest fan, but I don't want to see him hurt. Right now he's the heart of that team.
See you next week!

Delighted to learn today that there are only two Michigan home games left. We got run ragged at work with this year's home games (admittedly, one of those coincided with student move-in, Rosh Hashanah, and spectacular weather, and the other with Parents' Weekend) and I'm looking forward to some relative calm. Decided to cut my Thanksgiving vacation short, though, to help the day of Ohio State. This'll make me miss the LSU-Arkansas game, but as each return visit to Baton Rouge depresses me more and more, I increasingly don't give a shit.

Nick Saban's wife driving around Austin with a realtor: real or an attempt to scare Bama into paying him more money?

So, this why they need a play off. Right now it's pretty settled who's going to the National Championship Game. Of course I'm thrilled that FSU is one of them, but it does make the rest of the season rather blah.
But... there is the Florida/South Carolina game. If Florida loses (and they will) they probably won't be Bowl eligible. This makes me sooooooo happy

A&M has a bye week, and then our last two games of the season, both away games, are against LSU and Mizzou. I really couldn't tell you how either game will turn out. Our offense is consistently damn great, but our defense is consistently piss poor. If both LSU and Mizzou are smart, they will simply use their run game to mercilessly pound it up the middle on us. Fortunately, we all know that there are no smart people in Louisiana or Missouri. Aggies win out the season and get a great bowl game, Johnny Football ends his college career with a bang! Hey, a guy can dream, can't he?
But yes, FSU wins the whole thing, and FSU's QB takes the Heisman, even though Manziel has the best numbers and is outperforming his own Heisman season last year (but with more INTs and one big autograph scandal holding him back).

It's amazing how top-heavy college football is as a whole this year. My Pokes can't really be the 12th best team in the country, can they?

So as you can imagine, I'm pretty upset about this whole Jameis Winston thing. Of course he is innocent until proven guilty, but after going though the whole Penn State thing, I don't know if I can stand the disappointment. Especially because up until this point I really liked that guy. I suspect this is going to go into a he said/she said, thing and that means we'll never really know.
Oh and I don't care who's taking snaps, we're still going to humiliate the Gators

O the Florida humiliation is tasty this year...they don't have enough teams left that they can beat and eke out a bowl game. I've got nothing against Will Muschamp, though; he seems like an OK guy.

Can't say for sure, but I'm assuming this whole Winston thing will disqualify him from the Heisman. I would like to think that Manziel could win it again, since his stats are insane this year, and even better than last year, but I think he off-season problems will disqualify him as well.
I'm both excited and worried about A&M's last two games, because they are going to be TOUGH! We have LSU this weekend and then Missouri the next. If Manziel puts up some crazy numbers and gets both wins, maybe that Heisman could be his again after all. But our defense has been so bad this season that I don't know that we will be able to pull it off. We'll see, though.

I had fun freezing my ass of at the coldest recorded game in Iowa State history on Saturday (3 degrees F). It made me proud to see just how many other die-hard idiots showed up to watch a 1-9 team in that weather.

Okay well I think we knew that FSU would beat Flordia, and can you believe the ending of that OSU/UM game? Going for two is risky, as we saw.
But all of that pales to the ennd of the Bama/Auburn game. Holy crap. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it. I think I might have forgotten that you can run a missed field goal back because that hardly ever happens. Most of the time when you miss a field goal it goes out of bounds. And insisting on reviewing that out-of-bounds play, Saban practically gave Auburn the chance to win that game.
Oh and bravo to Duke. What a great season!
So number one is not a questions- it's FSU- but what happens to the other team? Is it going to be Ohio State, which is undefeated, or will it be the winner of the Auburn/Mizzou SEC championship game? Remember, there is no guarantee that Ohio State is going to beat a one-loss MSU, one of the best defenses in the country. It's going to be interesting.
Oh, and Florida doesn't get a bowl game- love it!

That was the first Alabama game I've seen this season...their (first) kicker has a weird approach. Is he normally good? He doesn't seem appropriate for the #1 team in the nation.
Would love to see an SEC-free title game for once, but I'm sure they'll find a way in. I don't care how much hype the conference gets...if the whole league takes a week off during November to play cupcakes, they shouldn't be able to send a one-loss team to the title game.
