Its crazy how much one weekend can affect the BCS picture. Obviously the Iron Bowl was the biggee, but there was lots going on. Will Clemson's 2nd loss keep them out of a BCS bowl? Who will get that extra BCS game spot that UCF freed up by finally moving ahead of the non-AQ contenders (and while I like rooting for the little schools, thank god we're spared N. Illinois in a second straight BCS game).

Living in Colorado, I find it best to ignore that we have any college football teams in this state. The last several years I've been a casual Boise State fan, but they seem to be on a bit of a downturn after losing to SDSU a week ago, not that this was their best season anyway.
I am curious with Alabama's loss how much talk there will be surrounding Saban and the Texas job again. I will enjoy a Bama-less BCS title game.
I really like the interim coach at USC and was hoping for him to run the schedule to hopefully keep his job. I never really jumped on one side of the USC/UCLA rivalry or another while living in LA, but having heard interviews with the guy, he seems like a great fit for that program.

I was so overjoyed watching that crazy, improbably, unfathomable ending to the Iron Bowl, but later as the remainder of the evening's games unfolded I thought to myself: I would take it back and give Alabama the win if it means there's now even the slightest, most infinitesimal chance that Missouri could wind up in the BCS title game.
Guacamole: I still like Orgeron for the permanent position at 'SC, and I still think he has a great shot at it. Obviously losing to UCLA like that is a big deal in Trojanville, but he built up a ton of good will very quickly and turned things around so swiftly after Kiffin's merciful departure that I still think he's got the inside track (especially with alternative candidate Kevin Sumlin agreeing to an extension at A&M).

Apparently USC has already hired Steve Sarkesian as their new coach. Would love to see Washington turn around and hire Orgeron. Those would be some fun FU games for casual fans.

Im a huge sec fan but I wouldn't hate and sec less nc but fuck does the idea of n Fsu-osu game sounds miserable I think it would be rather one-sided Yes, FSU would stomp the crap out of OSU. But, to be fair, I kinda think FSU will stomp the crap out of whomever they end up playing in the NC. They are pretty damned good. It was a bummer to watch my Aggies drop two in a row these past couple of weekends. Manziel has not looked himself for either the LSU or Mizzou games, and our terrible defense pretty much requires Manziel to score 40 points per game just to pull out a win. When he's off, we are completely screwed. Wondering though if his poor performance at the end of the season will have any bearing on whether or not he enters the NFL draft in the spring. While I'd like to see him come back for one more year, I don't think there's a chance in hell of that happening. Glad Sumlin is sticking around. Hopefully he can make some serious improvements to our defense in the off season, or we will never be truly competitive in the SEC. But good for Mizzou. They had a tough time last year, but if it's not going to be us, then it's good to at least see a fellow Big XII defector come in and shake up the SEC like we did with our Alabama win last year. Curious to see if Saban goes to Austin now.

Apparently USC has already hired Steve Sarkesian as their new coach. . Pretty weaksauce hire. Last time we dipped into the Pete Carroll/SC-ties barrel, we ended up with Lane Kiffin.

I wasn't surprised at all that Orgeron quit as soon as he found out. I felt bad for the players, but under those circumstances, I can't see him sticking around. Apparently they wanted to keep him on as an assistant, but he'll get a head coaching opportunity. I have no idea if they're hiring or not, but I think a good gig for him could be at a school like San Diego State University where he could use his southern California recruiting contacts well and make a quick name for himself in a weaker conference like Brady Hoke did.

Oh, and Florida doesn't get a bowl game- love it! For some reason, on Sunday we Googled Tim Tebow. The first hit was a news story that headlined "Tebow's pep talk to Florida falls flat in loss to FSU". Oh, the laughter.

So, there has been a small debate the past month or so about pace of play in CFB, and how some coaches want to slow it down. The coaches against fast play are arguing "safety reasons", that it will keep people from getting hurt. Quite obviously it isn't about safety, and these coaches are just trying to use a hot button issue to gain sympathy. When really it is all about the game changing enough to where the old style of football will no longer be as effective.
One of the coaches who is trying to get rules in place to force the pace of the game to slow down is Nick Saban, and here is a quote he said on the issue of "safety".
" he fastball guys (up-tempo coaches) say there's no data out there, and I guess you have to use some logic. What's the logic? If you smoke one cigarette, do you have the same chances of getting cancer if you smoke 20? I guess there's no study that specifically says that. But logically, we would say, 'Yeah, there probably is'".
That is not a joke, it isn't a fake quote. Saban actually said it. What a douchebag.

Saban is on the short list for most evil coaches. What, one weirdo loss to Auburn and he's worried the sky is falling?

I wonder what Saban would say if someone suggested a radical rule change that would actually do something about player safety, like say positional weight limits for players. For some reason if the rules made it so he could no longer win 9 games a year on physical superiority alone I doubt he'd be as worried about player health.

Instead of watching the Pokes get boofoo'd at a neutral site (that is 40 minutes away from anything fun without gameday traffic) by the defending champs, I'm going on a float trip Saturday.

What's everybody's plans for opening weekend tailgates? Iowa State got stuck with an 11AM kick, so I think we're doing a steak and eggs breakfast tailgate.

I'm pretty pumped for this season. I'm ready to bust out my new travel grill and the giant Jenga set my dad made.
