Doing a bit of Googling reveals that Saban's son's wife had a baby in December 2013, which certainly might explain his reluctance to change jobs at that time. That said, what I've heard is that he's more interested in getting the NFL another crack than moving to another college program just because, and, while Texas's pockets are very, very, very deep, Alabama isn't exactly crying poverty, which means that, unless Saban just wants to leave Alabama, UT is probably going to have to give him the biggest payday for a college coach ever (and even if he is looking to leave Alabama, they're still probably going to have to give him a fortune to get him to move to Austin.

I could also see him using the Texas situation for a payday leverage

Well, on-field issues aside, it's still Texas. I'm sure that kind of money is well within the realm of possibility.
I don't think it's crazy that he'd want to leave Alabama at this point. Not that Texas or certain NFL fanbases are any more reasonable, but he's spoiled the Bama fans so bad that they don't seem to really appreciate how consistently good he's kept that program. Certainly if he made a change he'd be back to walking on water again in Austin for a few years.

A bit of an odd week, with high-profile teams struggling against lesser-esteemed rivals, and nine players ejected for targeting. Oh, and one punch in the balls. USF @ FSU started early, 11:30 AM, and the Noles had a rather unproductive first half, highlighted only by Dalvin Cook's 72 yard touchdown. The second half was a different story, Everett Golson relaxed and threw for 163 yards, but it was Cook's 266 total rushing yards and three touchdowns that insured Florida State's 34-27 victory. Notre Dame @ Virginia was probably the most talked about game this weekend. They played hard going back and forth, Virginia quarterback Matt Johns threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns, and Notre Dame running back C.J. Prosise ran for 155 and a touchdown, but everything changed in the third quarter. That's when the Irish quarterback Malik Zaire broke his ankle, ending his season. In the very definition of "next man up," backup DeShone Kaiser threw two touchdowns, including the winning one with 12 seconds left, winning 34-27. Hawaii @ Ohio State. The Buckeyes had it much easier. Cardale Jones threw for 111 yards and Exekiel Elliott ran for 101 yards and 3 touchdowns, which I'm sure made Arkansas coach Bret Bielema happy. More on that later. Buckeyes shut out the Rainbow Warriors 38-0. Georgia@ Vanderbilt. Georgia had a good day with Grayson Lambert throwing for 116 and Nick Chubb running for 189. They were helped by Vanderbilt's Johnny McCray who threw for three interceptions. The Bulldogs win, 31-14. Oklahoma @ Tennessee. The Volunteers lead early, with Joshua Dobbs throwing for 125 yards, but Oklahoma rallied from a 17-point deficit to tie the game with Baker Mayfield completing a touchdown pass to Sterling Shepard to send it into overtime. Zack Sanchez picked off Joshua Dobbs in the second overtime to win the game, 31-24. Oregon @ Michigan State. This was a close one. Both teams went back and forth, fairly evenly matched. Oregon's quarterback Vernon Adams threw for 309 yards and a touchdown, but also threw two interceptions. Michigan State quarterback Coonor Cook threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns, but was also picked off. Bralon Addison returned a 81 yard punt return for a touchdown. The Spartans held off a fourth quarter comeback attempt by the Ducks to win 31-28. Boise State @ BYU. If you stayed up late for this one, you might have thought that Boise State had this won, but BYU scored 21 points in the fourth quarter. Boise State quarterback Ryan Finley threw for 297 yards and a touchdown, but also for three interceptions, whereas Tanner Mangum also threw two interceptions, but also for 309 yards and two touchdowns including a game winning 35 yard touchdown pass to Mitchell Juergens with 45 seconds left to win 35-24. I also propose that they call themselves the BYU Cock Knockers after this play: youtu.be/6ByywIGstPKWake Forrest @ Syracuse. Wake Forrest's quarterback John Wofford threw for 373 and a touchdown, but was also picked off three times. Syracuse wins 30-17. Memphis @ Kansas Memphis quarterback threw for 354 yards and two touchdowns and Ke'aun Kinner ran for 113 yards in defeating Kansas 55-23. Kentucky @ South Carolina. In a fairly close match, Kentucky quarterback Patrick Towle threw for 192 yards and Kentucky was kept scoreless in the second half. Gamecocks quarterback Perry Orm had 179 yards, but Kentucky's defense held South Carolina to field goals to hold on to win 26-22. Mississippi State @ LSU. The Tiger's Leonard Fournette ran for 159 yards and three touchdowns, while Mississippi State's Dak Prescott had 335 yards. The Bulldogs failed a two point conversion, and also missed a 52 yard field goal to fall to LSU, 21-19. This year's winner of the Cy-Hawk trophy: Iowa, who beat Iowa State 31-17. Elsewhere around the league, Arkansas coach Bret Bielema spoke out about Ohio State's easy schedule, and then his Razorbacks lost to Toledo 16-12. Auburn nearly lost to Jacksonville State in double overtime, but won 27-20. Penn State, Clemson, Michigan, Georgia Tech, TCU, Ole Miss, Alabama, Texas A&M, Arizona, Baylor, USC and UCLA all easily beat their opponents. Houston upset Louisville 34-31 and Bowling Green upset Maryland 48-27. Texas Athletic Director Steve Patterson and University President Greg Fenves mutually agreed that Patterson needed to be someplace that was not Texas, due to the fact that University of Texas Athletics are currently rather terrible. The AP rankings were released Sunday, with Michigan State jumping Baylor for #4, and Oregon and Auburn both falling. USC, Georgia, Notre Dame, Florida State, and UCLA also rose, rounding out the top ten, with Ohio State, Alabama, and TCU retaining the top spots. Next Week: The conferences start to compete and the season's picture starts to form. Auburn @ LSU, South Carolina @ Georgia, Ole Miss @ Alabama, Stanford @ USC, BYU Cock Knockers @ UCLA, Rutgers @ Penn State, Nebraska @ Miami, Clemson @ Louisville, Florida State @ Boston College, Georgia Tech @ Notre Dame, Air Force @ Michigan State, Florida @ Kentucky and SMU goes to TCU to see who will win the Iron Skillet. Finally in the "picture that says a thousand words" category, there was this guy: imgur.com/OnbRnhW

The experiment to live without ESPN continues. I went over to my buddy's house to watch the Georgia game. It overlapped with his Texas game, so we recorded both on his DVR and fast-forwarded through commercials and timeouts. Therefore I missed seeing Ole Miss win, but I was happy to hear it. We play another tiny school next week, but we'll see what happens for the Alabama game the week after.
Oh, that Texas game. That poor kicker.

October 10th will be the first away game for us without some sort of other engagements keeping me from watching the game. The cyclones sucking hard again this year will probably keep helping the football season go easy. Getting worried about hoops though. I think I'll be able to find streaming options that will work, but damn if I won't miss having a DVR on those nights when kids bedtime and tipoff run against each other.

That's my problem Superb Owl π¦, Georgia football has been some flavor of bridesmaid ever since I graduated. If they would descend into suckitude I could finally go cold turkey. If they achieved their potential I could fully ignore my guilt over wasting time on this corrupt sport. My favorite "joke" is that I only watch college, not pro football, because I prefer the taste of that unfiltered exploitation.

We began conference play and we're starting to see how this season is going to shape up. Some teams have fallen early letting others fill the void. Clemson @ Louisville. The game started off slow with neither team managing to move the ball until Clemson finally found the end zone in the second quarter. Deshaun Watson threw as many interceptions as he did touchdown passes and threw for 199 yards, hitting receivers at key times to keep his team in the game. Credit Clemson's defense, managing to sack Louisville quarterback Kyle Bolin five times and special teams made an impact in the fourth quarter when Traveon Samuel ran a 100-yard kickoff return touchdown with 9:41 left in the game. Louisville attempted a field goal but missed and was mounting a comeback when Bolin was picked off by Jadar Johnson to end the game. The Tigers win a close one 20-17. Florida State @ Boston College. Do you like defense? Well this game had it. Florida State had an impressive opening drive With Everett Golson going 5 for 5 on 50 yards to score an early touchdown... and that was it for a while. The defenses for both teams managed to stymie the offense. Dalvin Cook was held to 54 yards. The only other score came when Florida State's Jalen Ramsey returned a fumble for a touchdown. The Noles survive the Eagles 14-0. Auburn @ LSU. Auburn quarterback Jeremy Johnson threw for a hundred yards, two touchdowns and an interception, but that wasn't nearly enough to even compete against Leonard Fournette and the LSU Tigers. Fournette had 228 yards and three touchdowns. As long as he stays healthy and productive, LSU is going to be hard to beat. I would suggest others from refraining in taunting him before the game, you'll just make him angry. LSU 45-21. Auburn coach Gus Malzan announced that redshirt freshman Sean White will start the next game instead of Johnson. South Carolina @ Georgia. The Gamecocks continue their collapse, with Perry Orth only throwing for 66 yards. Grayson Lambert threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns while Nick Chubb ran for 159 yards and two scores. The SEC East is Georgia's to lose. Bulldogs 52-20. Ole Miss @ Alabama. Β This was the game that kept Belle and I up until 1 AM, because no matter how far Ole Miss got ahead, the Tide kept themselves in it, almost to the last minute. Alabama, after looking rough the first two games, decided to not start Jake Coker. They started Cooper Bateman. After Bateman threw for 87 yards and an interception, they changed their minds and went back to Coker. The Tide had a chance, but kept on giving the ball to the Rebels. They turned the ball over five times, and Ole Miss took advantage of it. Chad Kelly threw for 341 yards and 3 touchdowns. Coker threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns, but a team that turns the ball over five times is not going to win the game (unless you're Ohio State, but we'll get to that later). Rebels 43-37,Β youtu.be/rSzOXBXvl0kΒ Stanford @ USC. The two quarterbacks were even in the contest. USC's Cody Kessler threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns. Stanford's Kevin Hogan threw for 279 yards and two touchdowns. Two things made the difference, USC was hurt by penalties, including a 97 yard kickoff return that was called back, and Stanford's running team. Christian McCaffrey ran for 115 yards and Remound Wright scored three touchdowns. It makes you wonder how good Northwestern is. Stanford wins 41-32. BYU @ UCLA. UCLA's Josh Rosen only through for 106 yards and had three interceptions, but they still managed to beat BYU. Tanner Mangum had 244 yards, but this time there was no last minute heroics. UCLA prevails 24-23 Rutgers @ Penn State. Since I wrote last week's post, there has been a controversy brewing at Rutgers. Coach Kyle Flood has been suspended three games and fined $50,000 for contacting a professor about one of his students after being informed that it was against policy to do so. Flood pulled a Hillary by using his private email to send to the professor's email to arrange a meeting. Rutgers suspended six players for being arrested for various things like assault, home invasion, and domestic violence. When I was at Florida State I was a Graduate Assistant and we were in charge of grading papers for a large 100 level class. I had a few of the football players under me and one day I get a call from the athletic department checking in to make sure they understood the requirements of the class. The players papers were all submitted on time and adequate. I can't say if the football players wrote the papers or not, but it does tell you that they have advisors and people watching their asses and in this case were appropriately proactive. Christian Hackenberg must have been frustrated, throwing only 141 yards, but it was Penn State's running game that prevailed. Saquon Barkly had 195 yards and two touchdowns, while Aked Lynch had 120 yards and a touchdown as well. Rutgers' Chris Laviano had 251 yards but two interceptions, and Penn State held Rutgers to a field goal, winning 28-3. Nebraska @ Miami.Β The Huskers overcame a 23 point deficit to tie the game and send it into overtime, but was intercepted, allowing the Hurricanes to win by a field goal 36-33. Β Georgia Tech @ Notre Dame. Deshaun Kiser showed that he was more than just a last minute hero as he threw for 242 and a touchdown. C.J. Proisse had 198 yards and three touchdowns, one of them for 91 yards. The yellow jacks mounted a comeback, recovering an onside kick and scoring a touchdown in the last minute of the same to pull within eight, but the second onside kick was not successful. The Irish win 30-22 Β SMU @ TCU. Trevone Boykin threw for 454 yards and 5 touchdowns as the Cougars took the Iron Skillet, 56-37. No one was punched in the balls this time Air Force @ Michigan State. Β Conner Cook threw for 247 yards as the Spartans beat Air Force 35-21 Florida @Β Kentucky. Florida's defense dominated, with six sacks as the Gators held Kentucky to field goals. 14-9 Elsewhere in the league, top ranked Ohio State struggled with Northern Illinois, turning the ball over five times, but still winning 20-13, making some question their number one status. Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas A & M, Wisconsin, and Oklahoma State all won their games. Cal beat Texas by one missed point after. 45-44. Missouri barely beat Connecticut 9-6, and Northwestern beat Duke 19-10. Baylor was idle. Two TCU players, Mike Tuana and Andre Petties-Wilson were arrested this week for allegedly beating a guy up over a case of Keystone Light. Now, I am not a beer snob by any means, but Keystone Light? Both have been suspended from the team. Ohio State and Michigan State kept the top two spots in the AP poll, but the Buckeyes are shedding their number one votes. Ole Miss leapt 12 spots to tie TCU for third. LSU also left into the top ten with Alabama and USC falling out. Stanford returned to the Top 25 with Auburn falling out. Next Week: Boise State @ Virginia, Stanford @ Oregon State, UCLA @ Arizona, USC @ Arizona State, Utah @ Oregon, Texas A&M @ Arkansas, Mississippi State @ Auburn, Tennessee @ Florida, Missouri @ Kentucky, LSU @ Syracuse, Oklahoma State @ Texas, Vanderbilt @ Ole Miss, and TCU @ Texas Tech

We just announced yesterday that true freshman Nunez will be replacing Orth at starter against UCF. On the one hand UCF just lost to FCS mid teir Furman so we shouldn't have to worry too much. On the other its pretty clear we have no idea what we need to do to improve. The defence is just pure garbage. There needs to be a major staffing change on that side of the ball...

Thinking that Georgia is for real this year. I hope we don't make it to the top 5 for some reason. We perpetually deserve to be no better than 10-15, except during the real down years. Matty Mauk out for the carolina game this weekend. Honestly can't decide if that's good or bad news for us... If there's one thing ISU learned about Mizzou before they left the Big 12, it's that you never want to play their back-up QB. I am pretty sure we somehow managed to be the coming out party opponent for Brad Smith, Chase Daniel, and Blaine Gabbert.
