My guess, based on how long ago the account started, is that this didn't start as a catfish, it's that at some point he made up a fake girlfriend and trying to cover it led to more and more ludicrous attempts to cover it. Eventually he had to blow up the account. If that's what happened, it's reasonably likely hes started a second account and is back on the site. It's possible that's an overly charitable reading, though. You'd think "I broke up with my girlfriend." would be the natural way of ending that, not "I died!" He actually came close to this a bunch of times, too! I remember “Buzz” and “Opera_Punk” were on the rocks for most of their relationship/marriage.

Well, I can't get the google doc to open (aside: GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! I want to read these details SO BADLY, and I keep getting a dead link from it! This is the worst pain on earth!!!!), so I have no idea what's actually going on here, but Buzz always pinged my bullshit detector on AVC, from the first time I visited there. Hugs and I used to run a blog that had a hopping little comments community, and one of the regulars there was one of those "making up florid stories on the internet" kinda people. She was sloppy about it, so it was very easy to recognize what she was doing, but she was also benign (lots of easily ignored shit about famous people she claimed to know and minor health issues she'd suggest she and her family had). I think my experience with her sort of piqued my interest about that sort of behavior -- she hadn't done anything to hurt me, so it wasn't like a crusading hatred of catfish bullshittery, just a morbid fascination. And as soon as I "met" Buzz I was like, "Aha! Another one!" I mean, the florid way he was always swanning around AVC looking for attention and presenting his internal dramas... it didn't pass my stink test. Opera Punk's appearance sealed it. The trajectory of their relationship as reported by Buzz, the way her posts read... again, I can't specifically explain any of it, but I never once believed they were two people. And I never believed in the suicide. If it does ever turn out that there was a real Buzz, and he did kill himself, well... that's a terrible shame, but I stand by my cynicism. (And if anyone doubts that I was on to this, I told AVC's LJo all about it when we met in person -- BECAUSE I AM A REAL PERSON, AND SO IS HUGS, I SWEAR IT WE ARE NOT THE SAME PERSON DREAMED UP BY A MIDDLE-AGED DUDE IN A CINDERBLOCK BASEMENT SOMEWHERE -- what was it, four years ago?) At the risk of sounding like an asshole, I couldn't have given two craps about these "people" from the get-go back on TOC. I found these personalities and their constant stream of drama and attention-whoring tiresome and nauseating from the beginning. I honestly didn't buy any of it and had about zero interaction with either of them except for one post on TOC where I basically told E. Buzz and Opera Punk to stop airing their bullshit arguments out in our threads ("they" were actively arguing back and forth on a thread). None of this shocks or surprises me in the least, and I completely ignored the supposed suicide and its subsequent sympathy thread because it all rang so fake to me. My cynicism knows no bounds, I must say. I feel sorry for all of you who actually experienced any emotional turmoil over this situation, this is truly an evil, awful thing to do to caring people. P.S. I am real. I promise.

So, over on the Dissolve facebook group, someone emailed one of Buzz's old emails and got a response. You can take with as much grains of salt as you want:
"i'm very mentally ill with schizophrenia, sick and lonely. The internet is all I have for social interaction, but I'm now going to quit it for everyone else's benefit. I truly didn't mean to offend or hurt anyone, things got out of hand. Not that it will probably make any difference, but i wish to apologize and just move on from all those hurt's lives."
The guy who posted the response followed it up with a really nice summation, I felt:
"Assuming this statement to be true (and that's a matter of debate, of course) I think the E. Buzz Miller part before he came out as Dom was no different than being Gary X, Cookie Monster, or any other AVC commenter. But as Libby Hill noted, most of us are good, kind people and I think it makes sense it's going to draw in sick and lonely people who want to belong and share their joy in movies and pop culture. I'm not entirely sure, and I'd like the input of AVCers here, but I don't have any recollection of him being "Dom" before the advent of fetish swap club. If that recollection is correct it fleshes out a definite sad narrative."

Now we're going to get into a discussion about how much bad behaviour a legitimate claim of mental illness excuses, that's always fun and civil.

So, we're just accepting that cat cafes are a real thing? I tried to go to one today, and they chastised me for not having a reservation. I regret to confirm that they are a thing, I've been to one, and I needed a reservation.

As to whether "Dom" is Fatman, I doubt it. FM can't resist getting in arguments, especially with the more vocal feminists. FM has done this in all guises. E Buzz wasn't like that at all.
Plenty of room in the avc world for two mentally unwell people.

I'm not a psychiatrist, and I know that schizophrenia is a broad and highly varied condition, but my educated instinct is to say that claimed diagnosis is B.S.
This is a protracted and complex (and effective) deception. That is not characteristic of schizophrenic behavior. From the reading I've been doing online (especially forums for people with schizophrenia), when schizophrenics lie frequently, it's usually a device to try to conceal their illness. And schizophrenia comes with cognitive issues that make upholding a complex lie consistently difficult. Furthermore, in this case, the fact that evidence was being manufactured to support the fictitious partner pretty strongly signals that this is not dissociative or delusional, so that component of schizophrenia is ruled out.
So it seems to me what you probably have is a liar (pathological or otherwise) who is fully prepared to lie about being schizophrenic in order to continue to garner sympathy (or perhaps just to deflect guilt).
(And I know I offered the "performance art" angle earlier, but screw that.)
And I agree that the similarities to the Fatman M.O. are striking, but I think that's probably because there is a shared underlying condition for both, not because it's all the same person. Certainly, there is a strong set of common traits for people who are more usually brought to the public eye as online stalkers (of which Fatman is more clearly an example), what with a general need to provoke responses and get attention from the people they're fixated on, using tactics that run the gamut from positive to negative emotions, from fawning praise and declarations of love and friendship to suicide threats and threats of violence against others.
If there's an interesting feature of the E. Buzz Miller story, it's that he didn't immediately start the cycle over (as Fatman usually does), as far as we know. It looks like he self-destructed the persona and then retired for at least a couple of years before getting the itch to come back. But maybe that's how this kind of "addiction" works, and he's on a path to Fatmanhood of winning trust and then melting down again and again and again with new identities to keep getting that same emotional high.

My chief curiosity with the Fatman angle was how Fatman was able to get close, personal info about a number of our members. Obviously one could just be a master doxxer, but my mind was speculating that they possibly used Miller/OperaPunk as a way to ingratiate themselves and then use the personal outlets as needed. Of course, it's all highly speculative, and we may never really know the truth about Miller/Punk and Fatman (and a number of people probably don't want to know either, just for our own mental health), but my mind did flit to that thought more than a few times.

So if I can be supremely hypothetical and tie this to another famous AV-verse case. Obviously catfishing and trolling is more common than we know, but with E.Buzz/OperaPunk's connection to so many of the mainstays here over the years, and because of similar folks' run-in with a notorious troll, does anyone possibly think this individual might also be Fatman? Since the doc seems rooted in the notion that this individual isn't doing this for hypothetical "lulz" and it is a serious psychological manifestation, I would wonder if E.Buzz/OperaPunk could possibly be the Jekyll to Fatman's Hyde. And, like noted above, the "hijacking" of E.Buzz at times, which could simply be the person forgetting to change accounts. This is heavy speculation, though. I'd have to toss it to those with more of a history with both accounts. I started to think that myself. The level of obsessiveness and the amount of time this would take, I know there are plenty of catfishers out there, but it seems so off the charts that I wondered....

You know for a long time I felt an arguable degree of responsibility - the last thing E Buzz Miller did on this site was post a selfie saying it'd be his last because he was gonna kill himself, we had it taken down because of the content, and within twenty four hours I heard he was dead. It'd be absurd to reduce someone else's choices to a degree of social media frivolity, but all the same, for months I felt uneasy recalling that. I could have done something different. I should have done something different. I've never said this out loud because back when I thought it was real it would seem a self-absorbed thing to say (and it probably still is), but there's a weight off my back now. This kind of confuses me. I wasn't a big follower of this guy, though I read a bunch of his comments never the suicide one. I thought he died of heart failure? Or was that just the obit being sensitive?
