SPEAKING OF REPAINTING We all remember that I have obtained THE BEAUTIFUL OCTOPUS RUGS, YES? So three of my friends came over and helped me paint on Saturday: a SUPER pretty bright blue on the Z angle of three walls, a darker blue on the woodwork, and a color-that-looks-white-until-you-put-it-next-to-white-or-blue-cause-it's-more-of-a-blue-tinge on the rest of the walls. IT IS SO GODDAMN PRETTY and SO. MUCH. BRIGHTER. The woodwork is not actually done yet- I am finishing it up this weekend - the art et al is not back on the walls, and I have not put on the grey slipcover yet, but once I get it done, I will share pics with y'all. Also I still have not decided if the doors for rooms/closet/linen cabinet are going to be the woodwork dark blue, or the bright high gloss GREEN that is on my front door. I kind of want the green; my friend thinks I should go with the dark blue and let the GREEN of the front door be its own special thing. THE RUGS THEY ARE FANTASTIC

Do you not like the orange in the kitchen? Or is it just too O R A N G E ? I mean I can like teal and orange, if they're the right shade of each. I would say do the hallway something that complements the teal, and then later decide what colour for the kitchen complements the hallway. If the woodtrim is actually stained & looks like wood and not painted, personally I never really factor that into a color scheme. Wood looks nice with everything (unless it's, like, cherry). You can image search "teal complementary colours palette" and come up with a whole bunch of stuff that might point you in the right direction. Like this!Or this!Or this! The kitchen is far enough from the living room that it's not really an issue it goes... [living room opening (small)] -> [short length of hall] -> [closet] ->[bathroom/minibranch hallway to guest room] -> [short length of hall] -> [Kitchen] I actually having nothing against the orange, it was just so shittily done. There are random green tiles glued on above the sink with no grouting and none of the orange paint behind or between them. They painted as far down behind the oven space as their brush could reach etc Just awful. The living room is seperate enough that I'm not fussed about it being a pure complimentary colour as long it doesn't look actively bad Oh I really meant more just find a hall colour that complements both the teal and whatever you end up doing in the kitchen, not that the kitchen and the living room have to complement each other. Although I suppose that would be a by-product.

Although I suppose that would be a by-product. I'm just second guessing everything. I should just post a photo and show what's what. The other issue is that I have a really nice banister that I'm hoping is solid (likely not original but certainly OLD) wood underneath but I'm not sure... and not really sure I want to put the absolute tons of effort it would take to sand decades of paint off the detail work either even if i do a test and it is.

Are venetian blinds a thing people do anymore? I'm struggling with practical and decent-looking ideas for my front windows. I'll post pictures of them tomorrow

It has some crappy sheer curtains the previous owners left behind but they're a pain and don't really do much to block light, etc so they're coming down when I paint but I'm not sure what I want after that. From when I was moving in: The windows have a "large central pane, flanking openers" thing going on so I'm thinking something like Roman shades with a crown molding cornice could be a decent-looking thing here.

Are window treatments even a requirement? My personal preference is nothing at all -- I'm a bare-windows kinda gal. And I figure the neighbors are welcome to watch me sitting around my living room, if that's how they get their kicks. Heh. But we do have some glare issues from a couple of south-facing windows in the "public" rooms of the house, and went with those low-profile honeycomb blinds. They're easy to operate, retract to nearly nothing so there's very little window being covered up when they're not in use, and are not a danger our string-eating cat (who managed to eat all the cords out of the existing window treatments in our previous house).

It's not so much "don't look at me" as it is "keep some of this baking sun out" so it's not really an immediate need right now but it's something I'm starting to think about as I'm taking down the old and getting ready for "painting round 2: The down stairsening"

As I peruse pinterest, waiting for xmas festivities (brother's fam sitch means holidays in general at my mom's are a late-in-the-day affair), it occurs to me that I can't wait for "farmhouse" to no longer be a thing.
Fucking rustic-ass shit. I blame those homophobic Chip and Joanna Gaines fucks.

Not only are farmhouse sinks impractical (I think we discussed this up thread), but the Gaines' 'magnolia' aesthetic is just the blandest, wh-whitest bunch of whiteness ever. It is beyond basic.

I'll pile on in the loathing of the farmhouse thing! Fucking shiplap, fucking everywhere. Ugh. And all the bland white surfaces.
Oh, and I have an HGTV complaint to make. One of our annual traditions is to watch the HGTV Dream Home special on New Year's Day and joke about moving there. The hour-long special is always hilariously short on content, and you can tivo it and then zap through it in about 8 minutes. During which they just show, over and over and over again, all the same shots of the interior. But this year? Stupid HGTV and all their dumb renovation design shows! The whole thing was about the renovation of the house, so they had a lame House Hunters sort of intro bit, where the perky blonde designer and the derpy bespectacled decorator staged walkthroughs of the two finalist properties. And then the bulk of the show was segments showing the perky blonde designer doing a couple of minutes of some kind of renovation activity. Like the part where we watched her and a contractor building a staircase, in which they explained they were putting in treads and risers. (Commentary from the peanut gallery: "Wait, treads and risers? This house has it all!") We kept zapping... and zapping... and zapping... until LITERALLY the 56 minute mark, at which point they gave us the hastiest and briefest imaginable tour of the finished property. WHAT THE FUCK? They didn't even do the traditional lifestyle featurette on the region/town the house is in! HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO SNARK ABOUT OUR NEW DREAM HOME IF THE SHOW WON'T EVEN FEATURE IT? HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO ARGUE ABOUT WHO GETS WHICH BEDROOM? I don't care about the renovation! If you want a renovation show, then make a renovation show! But goddammit, the HGTV Dream Home show is supposed to be all about revealing all the stupid decor and boring open floorplan crap that we bitch about or grudgingly admit looks really nice, depending on how it turns out. I FEEL ROBBED.

I don't want to feel like people can see me, and they also help block any wintertime drafts without being total blackout.

I wonder if they are having problems with getting sponsors for this now. Their prize cars in previous years haven't ever been anything to call home about, have they? It's always been, like, some GMC garbage SUV, or a Buick. I almost feel like an Accord is a step up! But the product placement was definitely a lot more marginalized, at least in the stuff we weren't fast-forwarding through. Which, I suppose, lends credence to your theory -- they're not going to dedicate three minutes to glamour shots of a laundry room if they're not getting any sponsorship bucks from whichever appliances they put into said laundry room. Maybe all their sponsors are building material suppliers now?

I wonder if the revelation that HGTV shows are super fake, along with the tabloid exposure of Flip or Flop and the over-saturation of stars like the Property Brothers and Gaines family is affecting ratings. I know I'm not watching like I used to, back in the glory days of Love It or List It.

If we had some variety, it wouldn't be so bad when you don't like a particular show.

I'm no fan of the modern farmhouse-style kitchen, but it might be more appropriate for our Delaware vernacular Victorian than the midcenturymexiterranean and brushed stainless horrorshow the POs cobbled together.

Oh my god, this Seattle house on HH is absolutely crazy! I swear this realtor has been dying to get this house on House Hunters. The floors in the kitchen are made to resemble lava flow! There's a cave passageway! Oh no, and a cave bathroom!! A koi pond! A built-in waterfall in the front yard!
It's absolutely amazing. I've never seen anything like it. And yet, so much of it is so fantastic with a humongous kitchen and lots of beautiful woodwork.
Edit: And they bought it! For 1.28 million!

All right my pretties BEHOLD THE CEPHALOPOD The curtains are never like that, because I don't want people looking into my living room. So it's normally much darker in there. BUT LOOK AT IT. LOOK. v.v. exciting hallway! I am love that blue so much. plz excuse the fuzziness. Anyway oooooooo see the green door? ooooooo and the "bench" is in fact my great-aunt's handmade hopechest with a cushion meant for a lawnchair and some truly bitchin' throw pillows oh I should get pics of those for you brb Was I right or was I right? But wait, there are more! Just a land shark, ma'am Angler fish! I love those scary bastards p.s. that is not actually camouflage clothing, that is a scarf knitted to look like a snake that my sister got me for Christmas one year. well ok it IS clothing then I guess Just FYI, instead of purchasing all new pillows to match the new colours, I just stuffed the old ones in new covers that I got at the internet. MUCH cheaper. And here is the "artwork" over the couch. It is "artwork" because I am the cheapest person you know who is not actually 80 years old, and I just print off pics on regular copier paper and put them in thrift store frames. Because once in the frames, I can't tell the difference. and last but not least, my beautiful baby feejee mermaid *hearteyes*

We have a "sun room" sort of haphazardly slapped onto the back of our house (it's a poorly-built addition), and we use it as a bit of a catch-all room. There are nice sliding doors out to the deck, and one big windowed wall, but the other walls are unfinished (bare sheet rock) and the floor is pretty sad-looking cement. It's connected to the dining room, which doesn't get a lot of everyday use, so we don't mind that you can see the horrible mess through the windowed French doors. Because it's not heated, it's a great spot for cool storage in the wintertime, and otherwise it's full of food preservation tools (the dehydrator, a heap of pickling jars), the stand-up freezer, seedling-starting supplies, gardening and CSA containers, and the shelf rack of grow lights. But because of its "utility room" function, it also ends up suffering from clutter creep. There's a steady build-up of "not quite garage material" stuff in there, and detritus as the summers go along of farm and garden stuff. Garlic and onions get cured wherever they can be spread out in there, and trugs of fruit from our trees pile up. Every few years it reaches critical mass and we have to dedicate a day to cleaning it back out. This past weekend had that day in it. YOU GUYS, THE SUN ROOM IS SO MUCH NICER WHEN IT'S CLEANED OUT! Honestly, I feel like my whole life is full of endless possibility now that that room's been de-cluttered and organized again. We rearranged some of the appliances (there is also a large mini-fridge that we used during our kitchen remodel; it's handy now for summertime overflow and year-round soda storage), swept up all of last summer's onion skins, and tossed or relocated the last of the junk that had been moved in there during the garage renovation last winter. And now we have room for a second set of grow lights. Not a great view of the room itself, but seriously, I am beyond giddy with excitement about this: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bf9ljnFnpUl
