Figured people might want to see this; it's the opening four minutes of Season 3:

Thanks for posting.
* Looks like they're getting "No, they really are alive back on earth, it's not a simulation" out of the way as quickly as possible. * Danson could almost be straight out of S1 here. I assume his S2 contempt for humans won't be entirely gone though. * Just a one-off joke about "Do not duplicate" and frog keyrings, or Chekhov's key? Presumably the latter; it felt more like it, and it's hard to see them keeping Danson and the rest apart long-term, so he'll have to be able to get back to earth. Nerdy thought of zero plot significance: the Judge has implicitly confirmed that hydrogen was the first element around, so I guess the key is solid hydrogen?

So some thoughts on the solid return of Season 3:
Not a simulation.
I appreciated that they at least handwaved Chidi's American accent.
With his encasing his entire team in cocoons, Shawn seems to have taken a step up in evilness. Previously, he was mostly just a bureaucrat, torturing humans because his job was to torture humans. I know he tried to imprison Michael last year, but that at least was justified. Here, he seems to be torturing his underlings for the sake of torturing his underlings. I wonder if that might come back to haunt him.
I know the Eleanor/Chidi shippers will be disappointed, but it seems to me that Simone/Chidi is a more logical match.
I'm still chuckling that Jason thought a snorkel would help him breathe in the safe. And it's good to see that Manny Jacinto got to put his legit dance skills to good use.
I'm assuming they have more planned with Maya Rudolph besides bringing her back for that one scene cameo. It will be interesting to see what her reaction will be once she discovers both sides are trying to manipulate the results. I'm also assuming they hired Mike O'Malley because they have more planned for The Doorman than just him sitting there and enjoying frogs.
Welcome back, Adam Scott! It's a shame about Ghosted, but if it means Trevor will be making regular appearances now, I'm good with it being cancelled (though I only saw a couple episodes and was underwhelmed).
At some point, I'm guessing that Michael and Janet are going to find themselves on Earth for a bit longer than Michael's previous visits.

Ghosted was fun but very slight; it was never great, or anything, and it seemed to think it could coast by on the charm of its leads. That said, its leads had a lot of charm, and the show seemed to be gradually developing into something a bit less half-assed than it started out. You didn't miss anything great, but I could see it turning into something really good in its third season, had it gotten one. But I could also see it never really rising above where it was when it was cancelled.

I'm also assuming they hired Mike O'Malley because they have more planned for The Doorman than just him sitting there and enjoying frogs. Counterpoint: Maya Rudolph's role on 99 was similarly minimal; it's entirely possible Mike Schur is friendly enough with her that he can go "hey, wanna have a bit part on my show" and she'll say yes. Ditto with Mike O'Malley. Countercounterpoint: It would be pretty great if O'Malley led a successful revolution against the bourgeois upper demons and changed the rules so Good Place points are acquired not through virtue but by performance in a series of athletic competitions culminating in the newly dead scaling a giant plastic mountain.

I am still amazed at how much plot this show just gleefully burns through. And what could be potentially seasons of plot at that.

I'm not sure how I felt about last night's episode (and I wonder how much of that is because I watched it on my phone while sleep-deprived). It just felt like more moving the pieces around, at least until the end. And I have so many questions:
- Why was Gen overacting like that? Maya Rudolph amusing herself, or some more sinister purpose?
- Are Janet and Michael human while on Earth? Janet's makeup / skin tone looks different. They don't have their powers, but would we have had an aside about Janet trying her first jalapeño popper?
- If Janet is human, can she have sex with Jason now?
- Will anyone else pair off? Eleanor and Tahani have been hinted at. Is the Midwest ready for Chidi and Jason? Do we care what Iowa thinks?
- Why am I so concerned with fictional characters boning?

I get what they’re trying to do with the Judge, but I’m not a fan of what Maya Rudolph is doing. Or maybe I’m just not a fan of Maya Rudolph; I haven’t seen her in much, tho. But it’s like she’s either not hitting the same level as the rest of the cast or she just doesn’t mesh, and not in the way the character shouldn’t.

I'm pretty indifferent to the Judge (eh, she's ok), but see her as a fairly minor character so that's fine.
Also don't really care about characters pairing off, but while anything's possible, anything (within the core 6) other than Jason/Janet and Eleanor/Chidi looks like very strained/wishful speculation.
I do get a lot of enjoyment from all the high-speed plot-burn though, so the end of the episode (after what was presumably a fake-out over meeting up annually) was nice.

Parks and Rec : Buffy the Vampire Slayer :: The Good Place : Dollhouse
Actually, given the mid-series network change B99 might be the better Mike Schur show in this analogy. But man, as a large fan of both it took me way longer than it should have to realize The Good Place and Dollhouse are almost literally the same show

The funny thing is, I have totally been getting Dollhouse vibes, from the stealth over-arching plot to the memory resets and info dumps essentially changing peoples' entire beings.

Yeah, I was also a bit underwhelmed. The show still has the "shake up the status quo" thing going on, but there's a diminished sense of the shakeups heading in any actual direction. Maybe it's because the original afterlife setting makes the earth stuff seem like more of a temporary sideshow, but I find it hard to care much about things like Tahani giving half her money to Jason, or Larry Hemsworth. Of course, future episodes could very much change that picture given extra context (I was and still am hoping that something more will come out of the "Jeremy Bearimy" timeline discussion than just a moderately-amusing phrase and image), so I hope they do.

To be fair, I did think the episode did some nice things from the "illustrate moral philosophy" perspective, and the plot implications of that have potential: They're now doing good things not in ignorance of the possible reward, but in firm knowledge that there is no reward for them, which is arguably more moral still, so maybe they do get to the Good Place as a result, or (as the show shows no signs of imminently ending) the fact they don't is the means for questioning/revamping the whole system.

See, this is exactly what frustrated me about the episode: from the moral philosophy perspective, it's totally vacuous. There is a rich vein of philosophical literature about nihilism, not to mention philosophical literature rebutting nihilism (Sartre et al) - instead, we get shirtless Chidi quoting Nietzsche and then giving an Ethics 101 Cliff Notes version of virtue ethics vs. deontology vs. consequentialism as an afterthought. But no - we need to devote five minutes to exposition about things we already know, and another five minutes to Chidi buying gummy bears, and another five minutes to hilarious jokes about how dumb Floridians are, and another five minutes to appeasing shippers, and oops, we only have two minutes of the stuff that makes The Good Place unique and interesting and worth watching. Perhaps this is just a wider problem with Mike Schur as a writer.

The last episode was quite good and it makes me kind of sad that I am watching in almost real time, so I have to wait until Thursday for the next episode and then another couple months (?) after that. I don't know that I want to have the squad meet Doug -- I liked him better as just a random aside, and don't have the Lucasian need to give screentime to every backstory -- but I have some faith in the writers. A thing that bugged my librarian brain was that the library they were in obviously used LC call numbers instead of Dewey, and I don't know of any public library that does so off the top of my head (it's usually used in academic libraries). I did like " A Complete Idiot’s Guide To The Cliff Notes To Philosophy For Dingdongs... For Morons (Abridged Edition)". The Tostitos sponsorship of the library was a nice touch for AZ residents, too; back in the late 90s, they got sponsorship of the Fiesta Bowl, and their logo was like twice the size of the actual Fiesta Bowl logo.

One of the fine details that makes this show so special is how “broken” Chidi goes to the store and recklessly buys the almond milk he’s spent so much of the show feeling guilty for loving.
