In lighter news, Rush Limbaugh is dead at 70. Obviously a vile human being both philosophically and ethically, but he was also an innovator and top of his field. When I worked for a city parks department, I listened to Rush on the days I had to drive the water truck because it had only an AM radio and it was that or sports talk. It was riveting to hear someone that compellingly wrong; from what I've heard of clowns like Beck and Hannity, they can only pretend to match the potency and verve that Rush did 4+ hours a day. Now let's get to reclaiming "My City Was Gone".

In lighter news, Rush Limbaugh is dead at 70. In the way-back days when I was more conservative around 2000, I listened to Rush and Dr. Laura at work. I credit both of them for contributing to my gradual slide to liberalism, as both of their radio shows could be summed up as, "Wow, you're an asshole who refuses to engage in an honest discussion with anyone, and just shouts down people you think are wrong." Alternate response:

RIP Lawrence Ferlinghetti, poet and publisher, nurturer of the Beats
Edited to add: And another person who fought US censorship laws, but wasn't also the worst, like Larry Flynt.

Vernon Jordan, 85, a civil rights icon and friend of Bill Clinton. He also graduated from my alma mater and was the only Black student (probably the only Black person in the whole damn town, if I had to guess) at the time. After four years in a podunk Klan town in Indiana no wonder he went on to Howard for his JD.

He was one of the finalists for Picard. As good as Stewart was in the role, I'm really curious as to what Yaphet Kotto would have been like.

In news that I assume means little to not-UK people Iain Pattinson, the long-time scriptwriter on the unspeakably brilliant radio show I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue has died. He wrote most of the scripts solo for over two decades and has brought an absurdly high amount of joy into my life so I was very sad to see this. Should not-UK need a fix of British comedy and have a long car journey coming up (and if you can find it) I cannot recommend ISIHAC enough. Start somewhere in the mid-90's. www.heraldscotland.com/opinion/19176287.obituary-iain-pattinson-brilliant-scriptwriter-sorry-havent-clue/

Adios, Larry McMurtryLonesome Dove was the first novel of his I read, in a two day sprint while we were in Somalia. It's still one of my favorite books, but nothing else he wrote was half as good, and it took me a while to get used to that. Horseman, Pass By, Last Picture Show and a few others were close, though.

He's done a ton of stuff, but I remember him from Murphy's Law, an 80s private-eye show based on a detective series by one of the guys who wrote the Remo Williams novels. It was decent, even if it only ran for a half a dozen or so episodes, and heavily bowlderized everything about the books.

Rosa has been obsessed with Ramona and Ralph for the last six months, and I have been consistently blown away by how good Beverly Cleary’s books were in their observations of actual family life, and in their resolute decision to look at the small pleasures and large difficulties of working class life. A real treasure. RIP.
