I was shocked to find out how long ago the Ramona books were written—says something about her grasp of people that they seemed contemporary to me (at least in the 90s). I just found out she passed away and had the same thought. Like as a kid I had no idea that the early ones were things that had been written when my parents were kids since the stuff happening all seemed very modern and contemporary, especially when compared to other books for children of the same vintage.

Sometimes I notice on the "here's six people who just died" section on Wikipedia's front page that one of the people is actually a horse, and now I am wondering even more how those six people are chosen and how many horses are editing Wikipedia.

I asked the main editors if any of them were horses and they all said "Nay."

I always found G. Gordon Liddy to be a fascinating and complicated character. I remember the Nixon presidency, Watergate, and the arrests and trials that followed, Liddy's refusal to talk, and his unprotesting acceptance of his sentence. He enthusiastically committed a burglary because of his beliefs, and when caught, forthrightly admitted to it, and willingly went to prison for it.
I listened to his radio show a lot when it was on the air. (I also listened to NPR and Art Bell. I'd listen to anybody doing interesting radio.) I didn't always agree with his politics, and often he stacked the bullshit pretty deep, but I found his broadcast entertaining, and his interviewing of people to be insightful. He gave me the impression that he valued (his perception of) personal integrity above all else, both in himself and others, weird as that sounds, and that that was the primary way he judged people. He arrested Timothy Leary for drug charges, for example, but came to respect and become friends with him because he perceived Leary as another person of integrity, admitting his lawbreaking, accepting the consequences of his act, and being willing willing to go to prison for his beliefs.
Like him or hate him, he did interesting radio.

Prince Philip is dead. Every racist in the UK gets to move up a notch. Remember when George Harrison died, The Onion ran the ominous headline "Ringo Next"? Come on Farage, this could be your moment!

A few further details: Philip and the Queen were third cousins, they first met when she was 13 and he was 18, and two of his sisters married high-ranking SS officers.

DMX, at 50. It hadn't been looking good lately, so it's not a big surprise, for a variety of reasons, but still sad.

My mother (who is 82 and was born in Canada) is watching Prince Philip's funeral on TV and my dad made a snarky comment and my mom basically threw him out of the TV room. My mom said when she was young, the Queen and Philip came to Canada, and they had the Girl Guides (girl scouts) line up and my mom saw them as they went by. So basically I'm two degrees of separation from the Queen of England, right?

Frank Jacobs, brilliant writer / parody lyricist of MAD magazine, 91. Like "Weird Al" Yankovic, whose career he certainly inspired, many of his parodies were better than the originals.

Mike Mitchell, who has little name recognition, but who played the guitar on Louie Louie by The Kingsmen.

Jim Steinman, dead at 73Jim Steinman may be the first artist I noticed as a songwriter, when I realized that the only songs I liked by Barry Manilow, Air Supply and a few other were all written by the Meat Loaf guy, who, at the time, I assumed was just Meat Loaf. He hasn't done much lately, but I'm glad he served up so much over the top cheesy goodness.

As soon as I heard 'Original Sin' over the credits for The Phantom, I knew it was his, even before they got to the 'soundtrack' section of the credits. Not only was it a nice surprise, it lead me to a girl-group album he produced that was somehow big in Japan, but barely blipped in the 'States. It had the original versions of 'It's All Coming Back To Me Now' and a few songs that were on Bat Out Of Hell II.

Launched Tupac Shakur, played with P-Funk All Stars at Woodstock '99, and co-wrote LL's "Mama Said Knock You Out". Guy definitely left his mark.

Apollo 11 astronaut (the one who stayed and piloted the command module) Michael Collins. I've heard of his time alone in the command module during radio silence while orbiting the moon described as "The loneliest experience a human could have"

Apollo 11 astronaut (the one who stayed and piloted the command module) Michael Collins. I have often been sad to think that living memory of going to the Moon will die out within a few years, with no prospect of it ever returning.

Yeah, I know there's not much to DISCOVER there besides rocks and dust now, but what the fuck? We should TOTALLY be visiting it on a regular basis by now! COME ON!!
