For Christmas I requested, and was delighted to receive, some "weird Japanese Kit Kats." The most surprising thing about Apple Cinnamon Kit Kats was the color, which C informed me was pink, but to my color-blind eyes was some indeterminate shade between pink, green, and gray. Regardless, they were not a color one might expect an apple-themed snack product to be. The flavor itself was pleasingly subtle and aromatic, with barely a hint of tartness--again, a far cry from the astringent, artificial, Jolly Rancher sour green apple flavoring one might expect. I loved these. 4.5/5 stars. I also received Mont Blanc Kit Kats. "What is a Mont Blanc?" you might ask. Why, it's a mountain in Italy/France. It is also, I learned after some googling, a dessert consisting of chestnut puree "vermicelli" topped with whipped cream. How does one express a dessert consisting of chestnut puree vermicelli topped with whipped cream in Kit Kat form? Well, they're Kit Kats that taste vaguely of chestnuts--though I wouldn't have been able to tell you if I hadn't looked this stuff up--and that's pretty much it. Here the flavor is a little too subtle, and mostly just tasted of "sweet" to me. Don't get me wrong, they were still enjoyably nutty and creamy, but they weren't as much of a novel and pleasant surprise as the apple cinnamon variety. C, for her part, adored these, preferred them to the apple cinnamon, and and probably ate 2/3rds of the bag, so YMMV. 4/5 stars.

C ordered another box of exotic Kit Kats.
Strawberry: As with the apple cinnamon Kit Kats I was expecting that sickly artificial strawberry flavoring, but in another pleasant surprise these were something approaching authentic-tasting. I'm guessing some freeze-dried strawberry mix is involved. 4.5/5
Dark Matcha: We've actually already had these a few times before, as a local Asian grocery stocks them, along with a light matcha flavor. I (slightly) prefer the light matcha, which is creamier and less, well, matcha-forward, but C loves these ones. 4/5
Cheesecake: [deaddove.gif] Well, actually, no. These were weird in a way I didn't quite expect. They smell like cheese--like, cheese-cheese. Like, Swiss cheese, for some reason. But they taste like...nothing, pretty much. They're not bad, just...weird. 3/5
Chocolate Orange: I loved these; my new favorites. Chocolate and citrus are already one of my favorite combinations, and these nail the balance--the chocolate is just bitter enough to provide an interesting contrast, and the orange is almost more floral than fruity. 5/5

Toffee Crunch Oreos, alternatively and unappetizingly described on the package as "Toffee Crunch Artificially Flavored with Sugar Crystals Oreos," are not very good. Aside from general "sweet" they taste most strongly of artificial maple--strikingly reminiscent of the Waffle Crisp cereal I used to eat as a kid--with an incongruous hint of artificial banana, of all things. The "sugar crystals"--presumably meant to evoke the sensation of biting into a Heath bar or some other toffee confection--are barely perceptible above the general crunch of the cookie. 2/5 stars.

Sparkling Water Corner Limoncello LaCroix tastes uncannily like lemon meringue pie. My guess is the flavor composition is roughly equal parts lemon and vanilla. I have no idea if it tastes like limoncello, having never tried the stuff, but hey, it's good. 4.5/5
Cherry Blossom LaCroix, on the other hand, tastes uncannily like a cherry tootsie pop--cherry with an unmistakable undertone of artificial chocolate. I'm guessing they were going for some woody, floral notes to justify calling it "cherry blossom," but it doesn't work. 2/5

Starlight Coke: Coca Cola's gimmicky "space flavored" limited edition flavor. Burnt sugar/marshmallow on the tongue with a weirdly persistent mint/menthol finish. It's weird, but you know what? I didn't hate it. 3.5/5

I didn't hate it. 3.5/5 We've tried the Zero version and liked it. My latest beverage discoveries (all zero-sugar versions) are the Mountain Dew Spark, which is Raspberry Lemonade flavored and very nice, and the Wild Berry Doctor Pepper, which is also quite good.

Since we started shopping for groceries online it's been much harder to pick up weird new pop flavors - stores never bother listing limited edition stuff on Instacart and you have to specially request it and it's a whole thing. We happened to spot the Space Coke while we were shopping for cleaning supplies in person at Target. Now I'm wondering if they still make mango Pepsi, because I love that shit. Dr Pepper cream soda is pretty good too. I'm a little surprised they've never done Dr Pepper orange yet, as it's a great combo and was my go-to zombie flavor as a kid.

Pepsi Nitro definitely seems like a solution in search of a problem. Has anyone ever thought "boy I love Pepsi, but it's just too gosh darn carbonated!"?

Nitro beer is good - you slam it upside down into a pint glass and it gets a lovely head on it. But yeah nobody needs nitro soda.

What are y'all sneaking into the candy for the trick-or-treaters this year? LSD tabs? Toothbrush shivs? Dollar Shave Club subscriptions?

Witch's Brew (Marshmallow) Kit Kats: Do you like marshmallow flavoring? These taste like that. I like marshmallows! 3.5/5
Dracula (chocolate filled with strawberry corn syrup substance "creme") Kisses: These were less disgusting than I thought they would be, I'll give them that much. I assumed they'd amp up the sicky sweet artificial strawberry tartness, but this was fairly subtle. Still, they're Hershey kisses filled with lurid red goo. 2/5

I heard this in Homestar Runner’s voice This amuses me because I can't say "witch's bwew" without, at the very least, saying it in H*R's voice, if not commenting that it "seems like some sowt of... witch's bwew", despite nobody around me ever understanding what the fuck I'm talking about.

I've become more than a little obsessed with two candies:
Those Nerds gummy cluster thingies And the little Lindt bars with hazelnuts in them

Kickapoo Joy Juice
Named after a mythical alcohol concoction in Li'l Abner, this Mountain Dew equal has a greater distribution throughout Asia than it does in the US. With Hairless Joe and Lonesome Polecat still gracing the can, this artefact of artifice can be found at Asian grocers in North America and Oceania.
Unfortunately, I have been unable to find Kickapoo Malibu. According to recent research, varieties of Kickapoo can be found at Cracker Barrel.

NZ has a number of oddments in the lolly/candy department. Examples of Mayceys' Sour Feijoa Chews, Pascalls' Pineapple Lumps, and Mayceys' Pink Smokers, provide an assortment of the kind of weird Commonwealth sweet stuff Lt. Slothrop mused upon in the first 50-100 pages of Gravity's Rainbow.
A local, boutique grocer has started making some classics. Blackballs are a good example. They're boiled sweets with a stronger peppermint oil infusion than the usual red and white variety. Another, even more humourous example, quaintly named with maybe an arch sentiment lurking in the foreground, is the Acid Drop. These lemon lollies rolled in an acidic powder really have the best lemony flavour I've had pleasure to consume in a while. They are good enough that I managed to burn the inside of my mouth after eating 3 of them in a 2-hour timeframe this past Sunday.

Singapore snackers have devised tofu skin as a chip alternative. I got the tomato hot pot flavour. Decent. Fupi is the brand name it's sold under.

Dum Dums are the only OK lollypop because they're small enough that you don't end up getting bored with them and throwing more than half of it away uneaten/unlicked.

What about Blow Pops, which stop being a lollipop at around the same time as a DumDum but then turn into gum? Those can be worthwhile as well as you only have to get through about 40% of the lolly content to get at the gum.

While Chupa Chups are great lollypops, their flavour choices are not as wide and varied as the Dum Dums. Cream Soda is my winner of the Dum Dums lollypop brand, with Butterscotch a close, close second.

Lay's Limited Edition French Garlic Baguette
Primarily issued as a LE in ZA, I found them Inside Africa, a South African food shop. These chips are quite good if you like buttery potato chips with a wispy hint of garlic paired with a nearly undetectable scintilla of parsley and basil.
Watch this space for trials of Cheas Naks, the ZA Cheeto modeled after UK snack Nik Naks.
