Baseball has started again, apparently? Yesterday, I decided, “Hey, you know what, I should keep up with how the New York Yankees professional baseball team is doing this year.” Then I watched the highlights of their first game and was reminded that one of their guys is named after the Muppets rat, I guess, and I went “Oh, fucking Christ, how am I supposed to take this shit seriously, I need to support someone else. I should follow a National League team as well to balance out this implausible horseshit.” So I set up a random number generator between 1 and 15, got “13”, and went to the Wikipedia.org page for the National League to see what the thirteenth extant team they would list was. Turns out it’s the Los Angeles Dodgers, so I guess I’m going to support the Dodgers for the duration of this season, and try to figure out what their deal is. I know next to nothing about them because I don’t follow baseball very closely. But I intend to use this thread to report on my findings.
For opening day, I want to figure out one thing. Are the Dodgers the team with the one NL player I know the name of? That player is Shohei Otani. My understanding is that his whole thing is being good at pitching and hitting, which is good for him, because while not everyone knows this, in the National League, pitchers are part of the batting order when their team goes on offense. So, is Shohei Otani a Los Angeles Dodgers guy? As far as I know, the answer is “I actually think he might be,” but the only way you’ll ever know for sure is to tune in to my next post on this thread after I’ve had time to watch the highlights of the Dodgers opening day match from yesterday.

Game 1 (of 162? - Please Let Me Know if That’s the Correct Number of Games In a Baseball Season or Not, And Also Feel Free to Let Me Know if You’re Unsure of the Number of Games in a Season, I Welcome Input from People Who Know Nothing About Baseball offering Their Baseless Speculations As Well As From the So-Called “Experts”) - LA Dodgers (0-0-0) vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (0-0-0)
Well, the Dodgers won this one, 8-2, and are currently the best team in MLB baseball according to their perfect record, defeating worst team in MLB baseball the Arizona Diamondbacks. But it didn’t always appear certain whom would win. To begin with, all baseball games start out as a 0-0 tie. But on top of that the Arizonas jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring runs on Dodgers starting pitcher Julio Urías, supposedly the best pitcher in the world or something. But Urías finished the game with no more runs against, only 4 hits, six strikeouts, 0 walks (or whatever BBs are) and probably no balks, either. His ERA is 3 now. You’re possibly wondering how this can be if he only gave up two runs and the answer is that he only pitched in six of the nine innings of the baseball game. The Dodgers shortstop whose name I can’t recall fucked up and had an error at one point. Some guy whose parents actually named him Will Smith like the rapper/actor had a damned good game, if you’ll pardon my language. He had 4 RBIs, which puts him on pace for like 648 RBIs this season I think, which would be impressive, right? It turns out I did know who one of the guys on the Dodgers is, though, because I’ve heard of Mookie Betts before. He had a good defensive throw or something off of a weird line drive, or something? At least according to the announcer guys in the highlights. The Diamondbacks starting pitcher was some guy named Zach Gallen.
As to whether Shohei Otani is a Dodger or not, I currently think the answer is “No”. At least, he wasn’t in this game as far as I’m aware. Now that I think of it, I think he plays for the Angels, who are also a team from California, so partial credit to me for that one.
Join me tomorrow, as I try to figure out what Will Smith the baseball player’s deal is and also recap the next baseball match between the dodgers and Diamondbacks.

Overall, though, aside from the obvious attraction of watching perhaps the greatest baseball player of all time, watching the Dodgers is likely to be a lot more fun than watching the Angels. Also, even more unfortunately, the National League no longer requires to hit, which I for one consider Some Bullshit. Interestingly, while Will Smith of the Dodgers is not noted thespian Will Smith, he is what you could call a slap hitter, so that's a fun synergy.

Are pitchers still allowed to hit though? They're allowed to, but other than Ohtani they all suck at it, so no one would want them to. I appreciate your approach to selecting teams at random, but do look a little askance at the whole set-up -- "Oh ho, just COMPLETELY RANDOMLY I am now a fan of the Yankees and Dodgers, the two biggest-name, biggest-payroll, frontrunner teams in all of baseball! How quirky of me!"

It could even be Arizona, who currently has the worst record in MLB baseball.

He's the first player since... Babe Ruth, probably, who is legitimately a top-10 player in the league as either a pitcher or a hitter. It's unprecedented. Since the Angels are an American League team he's always been in the line-up as a DH on non-pitching days.

There's always Blaseball, which is more interesting than baseball because it has more Lovecraftian horror and less stultifyingly boring ennui.

I'm reasonably confident that the Diamondbacks will not be the worst team in MLB this season. They will likely not make the playoffs either. But they may possibly achieve .500 record! Progress!
But yeah, I also looked askance at "This randomizer just chose for me the two highest payroll, most popular, successful teams in baseball to follow!"
I grew up in LA, my first ever in-person game was at Dodger Stadium, and even I no longer root for the Dodgers because it is no fun to root for a frontrunner.
Also, the DBacks pitcher yesterday was named Zac Gallen, not Zach. Zac Gallen finished 5th in Cy Young voting last year.

For what it’s worth, I already supported the Yankees, because my family support them. So me supporting the highest payroll team in the NL was the only chance event here. But yeah, please feel free to mock my choice of teams. In the four major American sports, the only team I support who isn’t currently a championship contender is the Charlotte (or as their good alternate jerseys say, “Buzz City”) Hornets. The Bills are really good (though I supported them through years of being terrible, and am increasingly uncomfortable with watching football), and the Carolina Hurricanes probably don’t have the goaltending or high end scoring talent to win a Cup this year (especially with injuries to Svechnikov and Paccioretty), but they also have like the second best record in hockey (I also supported them through years of mediocrity). The Hornets are apparently, like, worse than, like the good teams like the Celtics or the Bucks or...the Suns are also a good team, I think, and it seems unlikely they will be championship contenders next season either. They’ve probably been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs or whatever, too. I did start following Premier League soccer this year and deliberately chose a team that had just been promoted because I didn’t just want to choose a high payroll super successful team, and ended up picking Nottingham Forest, who definitely won’t be the best team in the league in the near future and could get relegated at the end of this season. It does make, like, surprise draws against the likes of Man Vity a lot of fun.

Game 2 of 162 - LA Dodgers (1-0-0) vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (0-1-0)
This game was scoreless until like the seventh inning or whenever when Mookie Betts put the dodgers up with a solo home run. The Dodgers pitcher pitched seven scoreless innings in what was apparently his longest game played in MLB. I do not remember his name. But then I’m the eighth inning, a DBacks guy scored a two run home run, which was all the Arizonas would need to win their first MLB match of the regular season. One of their first basemen had a very good defensive baseball catch at one point to get an out.
I looked up what Will Smith’s deal and apparently his deal is that he’s some guy. Some guy named Will Smith. For my next installment I intend to discover why all the dodgers guys and dodgers fans keep doing the truck horn sign when there aren’t any truckers in trucks in the stadium to use their truck horns. I probably shouldn’t say this since I’m a dodgers fan this season, but I think it looks dumb.
Congratulations to Desert Dweller for her beloved Diamondbacks winning the baseball match. Perhaps this year they will bring home the mlb version of the Stanley cup to the Desert State or whatever the nickname for Arizona is.

Game 3 of 162: Los Angeles, California Dodgers (1-1-0) vs. Arizona, United States of America Diamondbacks (1-1-0)
Somebody please congratulate me on my accomplishment of recognizing both professional baseball starting pitchers from this match. I’ve heard of Clayton Kershaw before. He’s a famous pitcher, perhaps even regarded as one of the best of his generation. He pitched for the Dodgers in this game. And I’ve heard of DBacks pitcher Madison Bumgarner as well. He’s a famous pitcher, perhaps even regarded as a guy that has maybe pitched in the playoffs before and maybe that’s where I remember him from. Who knows? He pitched for the DBacks today.
Before I reveal who won, I must point out and important discovery that other eagle eyed viewers may have spotted as well. Have y’all ever noticed how the sleeves logo for the DBacks is a cool snake trying to eat a baseball? That logo kicks ass!
Alas, if only the DBacks pitchers and hitters had also kicked ass in this game, then my current favorite NL team would have a losing record and be on pace to only win 54 games this season. As it is they are on pace to win 108 professional baseball games, which would be…good? For them? This is largely because some guy for the dodgers had three home runs. Not his third lifetime homerun; I’m saying that he had theee home runs in the same game. I’m no baseball guy, but even I know that’s very impressive. I don’t remember Home Run Guy’s name, and frankly, I’m not going to bother to look it up. The Dodgers won 11-1 or maybe it was only 10-1; I don’t remember that either.
I tried two different google queries to figure out what the truck horn bullshit is about and the results didn’t immediately explain what the deal was, so I give up. That’s AI turning the internet into procedurally generated nonsense for you, I guess. Or something. I dont fucking know.
For todays match my research project is to figure out what Clayton kershaws gimmick is. Who is this man, and why do people keep insisting that I consider him an important baseball man. The only way to know is to tune in tomorrow, when I will reveal the results of the final match of this opening dodgers-DBacks series as well as the results of my painstaking researches.

Sorry, I had trouble parsing this. I think you are making a joke? If so, I approve, and Randy Johnson actually *should* be their mascot. Because the DBacks real mascot is terrible and most fans hate it. The Dbacks have repeatedly responded to fan complaints about this by saying the mascot isn't for us, it is for children.

Perhaps this year they will bring home the mlb version of the Stanley cup to the Desert State or whatever the nickname for Arizona is. LOL, the Dbacks are not winning the World Series this year. That would be one of the most surprising things I've ever seen in sports.
Edited to add: At this point, I'd be overjoyed with the season if the DBacks would convince Madison Bumgarner to retire. I'm feeling quite happy that he looked terrible in that 3rd game. Please Bumgarner, go back to the SF Giants and retire. The DBacks have a perfectly good pitcher wasting time in AAA Reno. Plus his name is Pfaadt, which is possibly a better name than Bumgarner, so this would be an upgrade all around.
Also, the World Series Champion trophy is probably the best looking trophy in all of sports, even though I'd personally much rather win the Stanley Cup. I have photos of myself standing next to both trophies, but I much prefer the Stanley Cup.
Edited to add: The name of the World Series trophy is the Commissioner's Trophy, but I don't think anyone calls it that.
Arizona's nickname is, of course, the Grand Canyon State.

When I went to a Diamondbacks game in 2016 there there was someone walking around the corridors in a giant foam Randy Johnson costume. I’m guessing he wasn’t the official mascot per se but one of the subcategory of mascot associates that teams use for run around the bases between innings contests (like the Presidents the Nats have or the sausages the Brewers have). He was hilarious and slightly horrifying and all around awesome.

When I lived in Phoenix I worked at Bank One branch, back when they A) existed, and B) had naming rights to the ballpark. We had an event at our branch one afternoon where the DBacks bobcat came to our parking lot and... I don't remember what the rest of the deal was. It was probably a sales event, there were probably balloons and a table or something set up. But the only thing I remember is that utterly TERRIFYING mascot. I am a far bigger mascot fan than the average adult; I normally LOVE mascots and mascot design. I'm willing to forgive a lot of mascot-styling mistakes. But that bobcat is just a bad, bad scene. There's nothing forgivable about it.

I am loving the new rules this season. The Brewers, after a bit of a false start at Wrigley on opening day, are romping! And after a few years of being dependent on home runs, they won the next two against the Cubs without any power at all -- just fun, old-fashioned manufactured runs with timely bloops and sassy baserunning, thanks to bigger bases and so little throwing-over to first! Then in their home opener against the Mets they kept up the entertaining small-ball, but added some home runs (including a rookie first career HR being a grand slam)! It's great! And the pitch clock is fantastic, too -- in yesterday's game the Mets violated it four times, including one hitter striking himself out by not setting up in the batter's box quickly enough. Marvelous!! (The reaction shot of Buck Showalter at the bench, listening stony-faced as a bench coach was telling him something, was hilarious. It was like the coach was saying, "Buck, seriously, pitch clock. It's a new rule." And Showalter was like, "No, I think I'd have heard about it if it was. The new rule was about bigger bases, I'm sure of it.")
Anyway, my team is full of New Guy magic with a bunch of rookies and off-season acquisitions doing all the hitting, and it's like having a whole new lease on life. SURELY this will keep up, and they'll go 161-1 this season!
