The Yankees coach guy got excommunicated from a baseball match for screaming at the umpire over a catch being challenged by the Guardians’ coach guy. The catch was obviously not a catch. What’s the point of getting kicked out of a game over that? Is it just that the coach doesn’t really matter because all he has to do is figure out when the pitchers need to stop pitching and set the batting order at the start of the match? Also what’s to stop the coach from just texting his assistants with coaching advice after he gets excommunicated by the umpire??
I went and read the recap of that Yankees/Guardians game. And I watched the clips from it. Yeah, that was definitely not a catch. Not sure what Boone was doing. The recap writer seemed to think his problem was with the length of time it took, and Boone said something about the crowd influencing the umpires. But, the replay showed that it was clearly not a catch, so I'm not sure what Boone was doing.
Maybe he was just trying to stop the team from getting deflated emotionally, and do something to fire them up. Sometimes managers do that, even if there is no reason to argue. Like, today the DBacks manager got himself ejected for arguing balls and strikes. This is grounds for immediate ejection, so he knew this would happen when he went out to argue. The Dbacks players said they loved it, and it helped their game play.
In fairness to the Dbacks manager, the umpiring in this series was total garbage. The Umpire Scorecards have proven that it has been a disaster. Today's Ump scorecard will come out tomorrow, and I guarantee it will be bad. And the two worst games were the two games the DBacks WON, so I'm not just whining because my team lost. My team won and I'm saying the umpiring SUCKED. #RobotUmpsNow
Anyway, the manager cannot text the assistant manager. The assistant should not have his personal phone in the dugout, this is a violation of rules. The manager does matter, but assistant should have all the same data and be able to manage the game without the manager.
No, that's a hit. The wall is fair territory. (As long as it is under any foul line.) That would be a fair ball, in play. It counts the same as if the ball bounced on the outfield ground and then the defenseman catches it.
That was one of the clips I watched. Wow, that was scary. The recaps said the umpire spent the night at the hospital, but they think he'll be fine.

The Dbacks concluded their brutal opening schedule of 13 games vs the Dodgers, Padres and Brewers. They went 8-5. The Dodgers, Padres and Brewers are all still over .500. Yes, that means every game the DBacks have played so far was against a team that is over .500.
Seattle is the only other team that has played every game against a team that is over .500. They went 5-8.
Dbacks now have a series in Miami. We will get to see Madison Bumgarner pitch again on Friday. Ugh. MadBum *used* to be a great pitcher. Those days are gone. Think we could get the Giants to take him back?

I am a Brewers fan and I'm glad to see that my disgust at the quality of the balls/strikes calling in this series is not just sour grapes. YIKES that was bad. I felt the first game was especially awful (we bailed on the third game after the fourth inning, so maybe it ended up being just as awful; I don't know), and it got so awful the Brewers announcers basically just stopped complaining. They were like, "Well, we'll see the ump scorecard tomorrow and that'll tell the story," and stopped grousing. I've never seen a broadcast team give up on complaining about bad strike calls!

What is an ump scorecard? Umpires are rated for their accuracy and given a review by the league after each game. None of that is made public, but there's a fantastic twitter account ( and website, for those of us who don't twitter) that posts a scorecard for each home plate umpire in every game. So you can see for certain if an ump actually was awful, or if it was just your fan bias that made it seem that way.

Also, what happens if the baseball bounces off of the wall and then a defenseman catches it before it hits the ground? Is that an out? Also one of the Yankees defensemen threw the ball right into one of the umpires’ heads in this match while trying to pass the ball to the catcher; that was kind of a scary moment. A lot of old-school baseball culture is about doing stupid self-destructive things like yelling at umpires and intentionally pitching at batters because it's The Code and you have to Stick Up For Your Guys yadda yadda yadda. IIRC you're not allowed to have wireless devices that can communicate outside the park in the dugout. They have ipads but they're limited to showing game footage. If the ball bounces off the wall it's the same as it bouncing off the ground.

They were like, "Well, we'll see the ump scorecard tomorrow and that'll tell the story," and stopped grousing. I've never seen a broadcast team give up on complaining about bad strike calls! Believe me, the two big DBacks fan sites I'm on were both chatting about the terrible umpiring.
The first game was *really* bad. Really, really bad. One of the worst non-Angel Hernandez/Joe West Ump scorecards I've ever seen. The calls were *helping* the Dbacks pitcher, but we were all still frustrated. It doesn't actually help our pitchers to be given this kind of false positive reinforcement. This strike zone will not be there the next time these guys pitch. The Dbacks have a bunch of really young pitchers who are struggling with command. They need a consistent strike zone.
Edited to add: I think one of the problems with the first game was the amount of movement on Gallen's curveball. You could see that the Brewers were having trouble tracking the pitch location. The curveball was fooling them. And I think it was also fooling the umpire. We saw this when Brandon Webb pitched for the Dbacks, he threw a heavy sinker which fooled a lot of hitters. It took a couple years for league umpires to accurately track that one. Just like hitters, I think the umpires need to see these breaking balls more often to understand the movement on them.
Game 3 was also bad, but this time the worst calls were going in favor of the Brewers. Saw a preliminary diagram that showed the Brewers pitcher was getting a ton of pitches outside the zone getting called strikes, but the same pitches were (correctly) getting called balls for the Dbacks pitcher. This is what the DBacks manager was complaining about. If you have a wide strikezone, then just call ALL the outside pitches as strikes. It can't be lopsided for one team.
The Ump Scorecard is out, this shows a bad 84% called strike rate in Game 3. Game 1 was definitely worse, but this one was not good. The diagram here shows what the Dbacks manager was complaining about. The Red-colored zone is what the umpire's average strike zone was. The red strike calls inside that which are outside the True Strike Zone were getting called strikes for the Brewers, but the green ball calls were getting called balls for the Dbacks.

Yes, they won in 2001. Thanks to Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling. They had the best pitching in baseball that year. And Craig Counsell, current Brewers manager! Total difference-maker! (I was living in Scottsdale back then, and would run into Coyotes and DBacks players periodically at the grocery store. The ones I still remember as if it was yesterday were Teppo Numminen, who seemed about nine feet tall and extremely handsome standing there in the wine section with his equally statuesque and gorgeous wife, and David Delucci (of all the lame people) who was outside the store as I was walking in and was so absurdly handsome (but very short) that I did a literal double-take and he smirked at me in this "Ah, I see you know who I am -- would you like an autograph?" way and I wanted to be like, "LET ME FINISH MY REACTION TO YOU, DUDE! I double-taked not because you were a very good-looking professional athlete but because you are just very, very good-looking, and now that I recognize who you are I'm retracting my double-take and will forever have you at the top of my list of terrifically lame 'celebrity' sightings.") (Anyway, I was also a homesick transplant from the NY area and made the mistake of cheering for the Yankees in that series. I had never liked the Yankees because I was a hockey fan during the time of their '90s dynasty, and, needless to say, that sucked up almost all the media attention in the area at the time and I was so sick of hearing about them. But then I moved away, was all, "Yay Yankees!" and the assholes go and lose. I vowed never to cheer for them again, but a few years later got into a brief baseball fandom again and was all "Yay Yankees!" but this time it was 2004. We all know how that went. Basically, if any Yankees fans see me inching toward their bandwagon they can be assured it won't end well.)

Yes, Randy Johnson did kill a dove in Spring Training in 2001. He said he was really upset about it for many years. He'd get uncomfortable when fans would ask him about it. It took him a long time to come around to finding it funny, as everyone else does. Now the logo for his photography company is a dead bird. (Or at least it was as of a few years ago. Haven't checked lately.)
And yes, Schilling is a right-wing nutjob. He was a great pitcher, though. Just not as great as Johnson.

The moral of this story is "never root for the Yankees".
Anyway, yes and Craig Counsell was on the 2001 team. I really liked him. I'm glad he's been so successful as a manager.

Here's something I don't think I've seen since Vladimir Guerrero was playing. A DBacks player hit a pitch that had already bounced in the dirt! And he hit a double on this.
It is crazy to me that 1. MLB doesn't automatically consider a pitch that hits the dirt to be a Ball. 2. Players can hit these pitches for extra base hits!

OK, so here's a question. If a pitcher threw a ball that bounced off the ground and then somehow into the strike zone, and the batter didn't swing, would it be a strike? I'm assuming it could only be a strike if the batter swung and missed or fouled?

As Powerthirteen says, if it hits the dirt and the batter doesn't swing then it is a ball. If it hits the dirt but the batter swings then it is a strike. The pitches are called based on where they initially hit.
But, as you see here, the batter can still swing at it and hit the ball on the bounce. Technically the ball is still in play until the catcher has it. The Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero was known for hitting those kinds of pitches. He'd swing at them as if he were playing golf or cricket. I definitely remember him hitting one that bounced in the dirt. But he'd swing at all these crazy low pitches all the time.

OK, so my Twitter feed is not very baseball-oriented at all. I think I've liked a baseball-related tweet here and there, and maybe tweeted about it myself a couple of times, but like mostly when I tweet about sports at all, it's hockey. So why on earth did Twitter decide to put this post by some Canadian baseball enthusiast earnestly talking about how emotional seeing George W. Bush throwing out the first pitch at a World Series game in 2001 makes him? What about like 2/3 of the people I follow being some sort of socialist made the algorithm think this is something I'd want to engage with?

It is absurdly fun when a top prospect pans out, and not only meets the hype but possibly exceeds it.
Hello Corbin Carroll! You are incredibly fun to watch. This guy is 22 years old. He is going to win the NL Rookie of the Year award. The Dbacks extended his contract *before he played his rookie season*. They extended him for a ridiculous 8 years/$111 million. This is absurd! And what is amazing is that he's probably worth it!
Look at his stats!
If you are voting for the All Star Game, throw him some votes. As I said, he is incredibly fun to watch!
