Might as well come clean about a few others I have the decency not to link to: 90s/00s MOR schlock that moimoi likes for some reason Duncan Sheik - Barely Breathing Michelle Branch feat. Carlos Santana - Game of Love Vanessa Carlton - that one song she had I've always confused Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton, particularly before Branch put out "Game of Love." Although I can't tell you what her first big single was.

I have this stuck in my head, so I don't see why you shouldn't as well. If liking Sponge is wrong I don't want to be right! I once saw the completely and utterly 1994 show of Our Lady Peace, Sponge, and Candlebox. I was there for Sponge, but a Tyrion with polio crutches kept screaming for someone...anyone to "PUT ON CANDLEBOX!!!!!"

Okay, fuck it.
I paid money for Taylor Swift's 1989 and I listen to it at least once a week.
IT MAKES ME HAPPY, DAMN IT.

Friends tell me that it's not good that I like Lana Del Rey. Thoughts? "Video Games" is one of my favorite songs, ever. As for the ones I'm ashamed of... Goddamn you, Jim Steinman.

I've never really understood the loathing for Celine. It's unadulterated schlock, but occasionally enjoyable as such. At worst, I'm indifferent. Well, except for "My Heart Will Go On", that is genuinely godawful. The above of hers lilts along nicely enough. "The Power of Love" and "If You Asked Me To" are also quite pleasant. I could sit through a singles collection if need be and be perfectly content.

@patrickbatman Have you delved deeply into Clannad's discography?

Like this one, as well, is pleasant at best and uninteresting at worst. But who hears this and thinks, 'OH GOD, MY EARS ARE BLEEDING. THIS IS SO HORRIBLE.'? I think some people protest too much.

See, I'm with SLOW in enjoying the high camp of "It's All Coming Back to Me Now", and I can totally sit through the Titanic theme (I had to for 4.5 months while working its entire theatrical run in high school), but "If You Asked Me To" grates on me something fierce. The chorus is just plodding and dumb - anyone could sing that - and the production is so lite-fm. Just thinking about it I feel like I'm strolling through a Hallmark looking for a Mother's Day card.

Yeah, I mean I have a bit of a soft spot for the lite fm production of the time, in small doses. I like it well enough, but I see where you're coming from. But you won't persuade me that it's more syrupy and dumb than the Titanic theme. That thing is the Platonic Form of saccharine.

I have something to say. I'm not going to wait for Wadsworth here to unmask me. I work for the State Department, and I really, really like Enya. I feel no personal shame or guilt about this, but I must keep it a secret, or I will lose my job on security grounds. Thank you. FUCK THA HATERZZZZZZZZZZDevin Townsend loves Enya so she's alright in my book.

Just thinking about it I feel like I'm strolling through a Hallmark looking for a Mother's Day card. This sentence made me choke on my Diet Coke from laughing so hard. Maybe it is that. Or maybe she's trying to disguise the fact that it ignites the flames of passion within her to an extent that she fears acknowledging.

That's it, Lord Lucan - you want lite-fm schmaltz with a plodding chorus? TAKE PHIL!

moimoi How dare you? It's thanks to the cold-hearted indifference of women such as yourself to his tender yearnings that condemns Phil to a life of deserted pub dwelling. He gives tears unto entreatries and he meets only with derision.

@scarlettletterowhora I like a bunch of Sting songs, 'Fields of Gold' not least of all, but I have a vague sense of unformulated shame about it too.

This is the only one I feel sheepish about, because it's so cheesy, but I love everything of his up to "Fortress Around Your Heart," which I also listened to today.

I think it was after the album from which the above came that he started to get into Dowland lute songs.

"If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" was also a good Sting song.

SLOW, I've always maintained that Van Halen are one of the most underrated (yes, UNDERrated) bands of the 80s, but to me, the Hagar stuff just lacks the magic. I can see why you'd enjoy it, though.
