Resolved: Doc Rivers is the biggest hypocrite in world history.
Rivers played for 4 teams over 13 seasons in the NBA and has been the head coach for 15 seasons for 3 teams. Among those teams that he both played and coached for is the Los Angeles Clippers who have been and are currently owned by Donald Sterling who has been accused of calling blacks Niggers, and using other racial slurs. Sterling's racist words and thoughts have been known by EVERYONE in the NBA for decades, NBA officials commissioners, coaches, players, and support staff on teams. EVERYONE knew and did nothing for decades, including Rivers who not only agreed to be traded to the Clippers and thus would be under the heel to some extant of Sterling's racism, but made the willful choice to leave the job of head coach of the Celtics to coach the Clippers and again be under the heel of a racist. he knew Sterling was a racist yet as one of the people in the league that "everyone looks up to" Rivers never said dick about Sterling's racism. Quite the contrary, but agreeing to be the head coach of the Clippers REivers gave his approval for Sterling's racism.
But now that Sterling has filed lawsuits to prevent ownership of the team being taken from him and to embarrass the league, Rivers has now turned into a whiny crybaby pussy bitch, saying that he is shocked, SHOCKED!!!! to find out all of a sudden that Sterling tosses around the word Nigger and other racial slurs in casual conversation and that if Sterling isn;t out as owner by the time the NBA season starts in late October, he Rivers will quit.
Where the fuck were you back in 1991 when you asked to be traded ot the Clippers, knowing full well Sterling is a bigot. Where the fuck were you last year when you accepted the head coach job with the Clippers, knowing full well of Sterling's racism.
Hypocrite.

And now Chris Paul has joined him in the hypocrisy camp, whining and blubbing that if Sterling is still the owner when the season starts, he Paul will quit on his team and sit and pout. Way to make a completely empty gesture that doesn't mean dick, quitting on your team at the beginning of the season, it ties in nicely with that meaningless gesture you made during the playoffs by wearing blank T-shirts and having the rest of the team dump them all at mid court. HOW BRAVE.

Everyone being extreme hypocrites is much preferable to the alternative of "well, we all let this guy be a racist shithead for 30 years, so I guess we all have to shut up and let him be a racist shithead owner forvever."
Now with that being said, we can all go back to ignoring our resident porn-obsessed shit stirrer and discuss fun hoopsball stuff, like where Kevin Love is going to end up.

Oh Paul George..... just.... so sorry.
The Pacers championship window closed as soon as it opened, such a shame. So it is basically Cavs, Bulls, Wizards as surefire east contenders, and then possibly Heat or Hornets after? Then the Knicks, Nets, and Hawks pulling up the rear? Could Detroit, Orlando, or Boston actually be a threat for the eigth seed? Damn, the east is one huge tire fire.

Just realized I completely forgot about Toronto. They are decent contenders I guess. Don't buy them topping bulls or cavs though.

Isn't UA based in DC/Maryland?
I think the guaranteed endorsement money (whether it ends up being from Nike or UA), but the whole Wizards thing was always going to be more of a LeBron-esque move (homecoming + talented young core = attractive FA destination) than anything money motivated.

Can someone recommend a really good Hoopsball comedy/drama? I was looking for something of similar quality and tone that Bull Durham is to baseball, Slap Shot is to hockey, and North Dallas Forty is to football? I happened to see North Dallas Forty the other night and I was idly trying to think up a quad feature movie night with similar themed movies for the other sports. I really like Hoosiers, but it has a mostly serious feel to it and there's not a lot of humor. sorry to do this so long after the fact, but i am only here because of insomnia:

Sooooo.....how fucked is OKC now? Way. Way fucked. Silver lining is that this gives the front office a few weeks (months?) to see what they really have in all of these underwhelming bench players and to SOMEHOW GET RID OF KENDRICK PERKINS. Like, trade him to the CFL. Anything.

I can't wait till Kobe retires, it is the only way the coverage around him will slow down. It is ridiculous how most sports media outlets will jump on Ray Rice and AP(justifiably so), but refuse to do the same with Kobe. They just ignore it all. All because he is good at playing basketball. Hell, I've seen it implied that his asshole behavior is fine by sports reporters, because he wins. I can't help but think they are also talking about the rape case. He is near universally loved by media and fans alike. It is straight up disgusting.

I can't stand that asshole and the fact that everyone loves him, for all the reasons you've mentioned. I don't understand how people basically act like the whole rape accusation never happened. He's like Ben Roethlisberger if everyone still loved him, even after everything he's done. The only positive here is that people have stopped comparing him to MJ. Which was stupid to begin with.

Pretty sure Kobe is not loved here in Phoenix. *Steve Nash* was called a traitor by people here for simply playing on the Lakers. And he's actually a good guy. All of my friends who are Suns fans loathe Kobe. Although, everyone is now having a big laugh over how it is pretty much his fault that the Lakers are so crappy this year. So, you know, thanks Kobe!

I've never been much of a basketball fan, but since baseball is over I need something to drink beer to every night. Looks like I picked a bad time to try to get into the game, though, because the Celtics are getting lit up.

Sure, Suns fans hate Kobe, and the Lakers because they have a direct and recent rivalry. I don't know what other teams think they have a rivalry with the Lakers besides the Clippers and Celtics. Other than those fans, the rest of the country loves Kobe. And I guarantee there are casual basketball/sports fans in Phoenix that love him too. Because they are too lazy to actually think about it. Or are misogynist rape apologists. In any case I'm sure they're there.

Hey you're getting in on the ground floor with this Celtics squad though, especially if they deal Rondo for more young pieces. Now one will accuse of being a bandwagoner if you get super into the Celtics now. And Brad Stevens is a good coach, they'll figure something out up there.

I feel like Kobe was pretty universally loathed outside of LA up until the last few years, and even now it's less that people "like" Kobe and more that it's obvious the end is near and basketball people are weirdly compelled to pay respect to his career even though he's a well documented asshole and alleged rapist.
And as wrong and gross as it is, Kobe is hardly a special case when it comes to the public have selective memories with star athletes. Hopefully he's the last of that breed and the incidents with Ray Rice, AP, and others continue to be part of their narratives when they inevitably come back to play, but I'm not holding my breath.

I've been following the NBA pretty closely for the last 15 years or so, traveled around the country a ton during that time, and Kobe was never universally loathed. You're just not talking to the right (wrong) people.

You're just not talking to the right (wrong) people. Here's my feeling for what the career arc of Kobe has been, stop me where you disagree:
-Kobe is a super-popular rookie/next big thing -The Shaq/Kobe Lakers are dominant, but not particularly loved -Shaq/Kobe Lakers break-up and the popular perception is that Kobe is a whiny brat who didn't know how good he had it -The Colorado incident happens -Kobe spends a few years perceived as nothing but a selfish guy playing for his numbers -They basically steal Pau from Memphis, they win a couple titles and he salvages his reputation as a player, people still think he's a dick -Kobe gets old, locks up the Lakers with a giant albatross contract, people still think he's a dick

I just think you're confusing basketball fans with the general public. Otherwise, your timeline works for me. Seems we may have to agree to disagree.

Again, treating the player and the awful, awful human being as two separate entities is nothing unique to Kobe or any sports fans. He's been a relevant player for almost two decades, so you can't not cover him and no columns or fan blog posts are ever going to end with "...and just a reminder none of this matters because he probably raped that girl in Colorado". I mean, maybe they should, but it's not going to happen.
